A. His option isn't vesting

B. We all know his contract was for 3 years, even though we'll be paying a DH catcher money for the final two

C. Saying Sanchez will be a bust is rather stupid right now

Edit: just like we all know the sox weren't expecting 7 years of prime performance out of Price when they signed him

No Yankee fan thought McCann's 5 yr deal would mean he'd be a dominant catcher in year 5. He will be 33 next yr. He'll be 34 in the final year of the contract. I think the predominant thought at the time was that he could switch to 1b for 2017 when Tex leaves via FA. Well, now with Bird entering the equation and Austin forcing himself onto the scene, 1b is a little bit murkier. He was a solid defensive catcher here. He provided 20HR pop and if not for Sanchez taking his job Aug 1, he'd have gotten to 20 already this yr. There are TONS of contracts I have an issue with. McCann's isn't one of them. He bought us time. We got McCann right after the Pineda deal. We suffered through a season with Stewart as our catcher. Our closest prospect was a kid in AA who seemed a bit immature. Could he have made the leap then, maybe? But would he be what he is now, no way. McCann allowed the Yankees to develop Sanchez. He was always a good blocker and thrower, but his calling of games and his pitch framing were terrible. With time and training, he is now really good at both and manages his pitchers well also. Plus, he matured with the bat as well. He is ready. He is now our starting catcher. And McCann's acquisition allowed this maturity to grow

he's not even a dominant catcher in year 3.

i could argue he wasnt a dominant catcher in either of the first 2 years either.

he's guaranteed $85MM from your organization and your ok with him being a placeholder. got it.

typical yankees fan thought process....

The Yankees would have been better off re-signing Martin. If I recall correctly, they were unwilling to pay him the going rate, yet they turn around the following year and give a monster contract to McCann.

For wasted money, nothing can top the Sox troika of Panda, Castillo and Craig. 200 million for absolute zero.

??? Stay with the theme here, Bell.

i dont see any sox fans saying those are good contracts.

McCann's contract is half-bad, which puts it in the same category as a lot of free agent contracts.

so you think he was worth $17MM per year for the first 2.5 years of the contract?

FanGraphs does. 17 mill doesn't go that far anymore...

Fangraphs has his value at $49 mil as a Yankee. Almost exactly what he's earned. Mic drop

so you think he was worth the $17MM per year for the first 2.5 years of the 5 year contract. and apparently fangraphs does too. i dont. again, which is my opinion. i think the mccann signing is a bust. if it was a 2.5 year contract i would just have called it an overpay. but since it's a 5 year guaranteed contract i call it a bust. ima hold onto the mic.......

McCann has certainly been a semi-bust. It'll be interesting to see if Cashman can get anything for him.

I just think that free agency in general has been a shitshow since the salaries went into the stratosphere. The Yankees have certainly been burned by that reality big time, and the Sox have joined them and quite frankly outdone them with the $167 million for nothing on Panda and Castillo.

I don't think he's been a bust, but he has certainly not lived up to the level that I'm sure the Yankees thought they were getting. Either way, a five year contract for him was not a smart move.

 This is the Yankees thread Bell. Once again, stick to the theme.

Yankees bad. Red Sox good.

Cervelli has been really good in Pittsburgh and got a big contract from them. Montero ate himself out of the position and could only hit in AAA

I was only giving you s*** Doc! No harm intended.

I surely hope that no Yankee fans live in your neighborhood!

Local TV report: "Live report of a Virginia school teacher in possession of a valve stem remover has been detained this morning. Three cars in her neighbor's driveway were found to have four flat tires. Details at noon."

LOL You give me too much credit with the whole 'valve stem remover' thing. I honestly did not even know that such a tool existed.

It's like a dollar item at any auto parts store.

Get to work.

In order to get a prime free agent, you typically overpay in years and dollars. We knew McCann wasn't the answer in year 5, just like you know Price will be a shell of himself in year 7 of his deal. Typically, you try to make your money back in the first half to 75% of the contract because the last 25-50% is going to be a bust. For us, McCann bridged a gap that we thought had a title run in it. We were wrong. But more importantly, he bridged a gap to avoid us having to rush Sanchez. Now, he's primed and ready to be a beast.

i can guarantee you that if/when price isnt even starting at year 3.5 of his 7 year contract i wont be on a yankees forum website waxing how it was a good signing/great contract because he was the bridge to groome.......but thats just me.

Wouldn't it be easier for me to just slash the tires?

Price's deal was made before you even had Groome. We signed McCann when Sanchez was in AA.

As Cycles pointed out, though, 5 years is an awfully long bridge to a guy who is up 2.5 years later.
