Credit Papi for feeling the DJ Kitty mojo. He was given the option of taking the day off, but said he wanted to play.

This is fact. I would never say that he is finished (he has proven his naysayers wrong too many times), but he was as much a part of the problem the first half as everyone else was.

 

Through June 30, his line was .228/.313/.422/.735 . In the offensively putrid month of May, he hit .214/.287/.337/.624 . He was definitely part of the problem. Since July 1, he is hitting .333/.418/.724/1.141 .

Just to give a shout out to one of my favorite stats, BABIP, Papi's unsustainable .227 BABIP through June, which IIRC was the 2nd lowest of all hitters at the time, told us that his numbers would improve. Also, his batted ball velocity was something like 16th best in baseball at the time.

Well, I didn't watch the game (football), but I saw the HR because ESPN was monitoring it like crazy. Every time he was up, they had it all over their ticker. So, I flipped to NESN, and saw it. Here is the culmination of a player's career that has been part of this team for as long as I can physically remember. Pretty special moment for me.

He has been a guy that has had some slow starts, but he is still one of the best in the game, and he is our best hitter. A guy who hits 30 HRs and knocks in 100 every year is not the problem. The problem with this team from day one has been ....
