Owens walks are a problem. Four more again last night. That change up is a keeper though. If you recall Lester when he first came up he had a high walk total. He doesn't throw hard , but he still has to control the fastball to be able to go deeper into the game.

As bad as they need pitching right now, trading Owens is not a good idea. I feel like he could be a big piece of the puzzle eventually.

Trade him if it helps brings back a young arm that is better (i.e. not for Hamels trade). Otherwise, keep him around.

Good: Owens has a wipeout pitch and gets swings and misses

Good: Owens has strong mound character. The outing against Seattle, where he shook off a terrible start and turn things around to keep the Sox in the game - was evidence of a keeper

Bad: His control has been wobbly at times

For a guy's first handful of starts, it is clear that the good outweighs the bad, and the good is stuff that is hard to teach.

Obviously the "right deal" caveat applies to anybody - but he surely looks like a #3 sort with a fringy 1/#2 upside.

The comparative scouting reports between him and Rodriguez seem quite accurate (the latter has the higher ceiling, but Owens seems like the surer thing)

We need a power lefty. Right now, he's our best bet. IMO, every rotation needs at least two solid lefties. Adding a FA LHP would be nice as well, but I like Owens.

Rodriguez throws 95-96. Owens is more like 90-92. Rodriguez is the best power lefty on the team.

Do people consider Owens a power pitcher?

No. Although I think when folks throw around power vs contact - it is often more accurately strikeout vs contact. And clearly Owens can strike batters out. Fastball is only low 90s, but can play up because of that changeup and that deception.

s***. I completely forgot he existed for a minute there.

I say he is still very young and learning his craft.

Hold onto him unless he yields a stud top of the rotation type guy.

^^This.

I would say no. His best pitch has been the change up. He has had a hard time controlling his fast ball and that is the reason his walks are up. That is a similar problem that Lester had when he came up. Owens personality based on what I've seen and heard is that he doesn't let things bother him. Of the two Rodriguez is your power arm.
