Why the f*** is Shaw swinging at the first pitch?

The Sox gave us another tease last night. A rather disappointing ending, but I can understand why Shaw swung at the first pitch. Bases loaded, the pitcher is likely going to groove one to try to get ahead in the count.

The first pitch is sometimes the best pitch you'll see. Any baseball player knows that. Would you rather him swing at a first pitch or be automatically down 0-1?

As a baseball player, you don't need to tell me that. But in that situation, with your adrenaline way up, it's better to see one (or more) to calm yourself down.

How would your adrenaline go down after getting behind in the count?

Was it a mistake for Nava to swing at the first pitch? I'm sure his nerves were as high as they ever were.

Being mad about the result is fine, but there was nothing wrong with his decision.

At least for me, I don't really care when I'm behind in the count. And for professional hitters, they should be able to know how to fight when they're down 0-2, 1-2, etc... The first pitch for me in that situation lets me know what I'm up against. It's usually a fastball, so I let it go by to see if I'm able to catch up with it. If it's too fast or overpowering, and I swing at it, not knowing I can't handle it, I'll screw something up. If I know I can't handle it, I'll foul it off until I get something better. Same idea goes for any pitch.
