This guy isn't legal, but if they were to call him on it, they would just have to redo the pitch and make him throw it on the rubber.

That is clearly not legal. You obviously cannot run over the mound and throw the ball, and obviously you cannot jump toward the plate then throw the ball. Come on, umps!

I feel like it somehow has to be legal. I doubt this is something new He's just started doing now. Some other team has to of complained about this, this isn't his MLB debut.

So why don't we get some guy that long jumps to the plate, lands, then throws a knuckle ball. Edited by SoxHop

Wrong.

"Capps' mechanics came into question last Thursday, when he was pitching in the ninth inning for Triple-A New Orleans. Each of Capps' first two pitches against Omaha were called illegal pitches, resulting in automatic balls."

Yeah that was my bad. If it is an illegal pitch, it's a ball, and with runners on base, it's a balk.

a) The Windup Position. The pitcher shall stand facing the batter, his pivot foot in contact with the pitcher’s plate and the other foot free. From this position any natural movement associated with his delivery of the ball to the batter commits him to the pitch without interruption or alteration. He shall not raise either foot from the ground, except that in his actual delivery of the ball to the batter, he may take one step backward, and one step forward with his free foot.

This is pretty clear. The pitch is obviously illegal, and I'm really surprised they don't call it. It's possible they don't see how egregious his leap forward is in real time.

Oh... now you love stats....???

Check out Mileys picture in this link...

http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/gamelog/_/id/31094/wade-miley

Then check how he has improved his era since the beginning of the year. Then look at the earned runs in the last 10 or more games......

He's not all that bad.....

I could live with him as a #5 even with his 4.5 ERA. The problem is bottom 3 guys in our rotation put up a 5.5 ERA combined.

It's so clear that every ump disagrees with you.

You didn't look at his stats did you???????

He had to up battle his era giving up 7 runs in 2 innings on his second game... since then he has been better than a #5 pitcher....... no way is he a number 5.

He's not saying he's a five. He's saying that on a Decent staff, he wouldn't mind miley as a five

That's like the argument that a pitcher only has one bad inning every game. The guy with some bad games and the guy with a bad inning each game are both bottom of the rotation guys with 4.5 ERAs. Everything else is cherry picking.

I don't care how a guy pitched a couple months ago. I care about how a guy is pitching now. Right now, Miley is pitching well.

If Miley is your number 5, you have an AMAZING rotation....

They likely don't see what he's doing, or simply disregard the rule. Read the last sentence. "He shall not raise either foot from the ground ... except he may take one step backward, and one step forward with his free foot." No competent speaker of English could misinterpret that sentence. (I realize that excludes ESPN posters with juvenile avatars and middle school humor tags.)

Late heroics to win games lately.......... . which is something we saw pretty much none of until lately......

Reminds me of 2013, when I came to the conclusion that I love that DIRTY WATER!!

I don't care how he is pitching except for the current game, but that doesn't make me ignore what he is-- a #5 guy with a 4.5 ERA.

Winning games late would be so much easier with another arm like Taz/Ue to help them out.
Until recently, we have shown no ability to come from behind.

Papelbon wants out of Philly to go to a contender. I wouldn't call us that yet, but he might consider coming back.

I wouldn't be surprised for him to put up a 4.20 ERA/190 IP year. We'd all love a #5 guy is putting up those kind of numbers, but very few teams have that kind of a rotation.

Agreed. Unfortunately, he is our #3 guy for now.

I agree with you. A 4.5 era, considering AL average starting pitching era this year is 4.04 as of today, puts him absolutelty no better than a number 4. He is ranked 94th out of 128 starting pitchers with at least 60 innings pitched. Sure number 4's can have months where they pitch like 3's or 2's, but they just don't do it consistently. You can't just discount games where he single handed put the red sox out of it really early with no hope of coming back.

I feel like I want to puke when I write this....... but Hammels and Papelbon would give us a very good chance this year.

Although I may be forgetting other teams in the ALE are going to get some help too......

And I hate Papelbon
