Sweeney is 6'5" and about 225 and he hit HRs at a rate of 1 for every 600 ABs. Seriously.

And it wasn't like he was a Juan Pierre type guy who made up for having no power by stealing bases and playing D, he was just useless

I think we've all come to the conclusion, that we got the short end of that deal. Josh is obviously one hell of an outfielder and the two guys that we got back for him, aren't with the team anymore.

Several breaking news items:

First, the Weather Channel has decided to feature Red Sox games in their natural disaster series on an ongoing basis. "This is a great day for our broadcasting company," one official said.

Second, California has officially declared an end to their state of emergency. Masterson, in particular, was singled out for his particular efforts in ending the drought.

Third, Larry Lucchino has announced 'Hit a homer off of a Red Sox starter for the Fans' day at Fenway Park. Only fans who fail to hit a homer will receive a special edition can of green monster paint. Supplies are limited, but organizers are not worried.

Last, Tyson, the nation's largest meatball manufacturer, is going 'all in' as the official sponsor of the 2015 Boston Red Sox pitching staff. All starters will field an attractive meatball patch on their left shoulder sleeve to commemorate the occasion.

So now the story is if our offense can hit a crappy pitcher. The game is out of hand. There has been a few rays of sunshine about our offence.

If we get only a couple of runs or no runs off this pitcher.......... I think is telling...

Please tell me you come to the game thread every once in a while and give a breaking news post........... it might make it worth it to stick around here while we look up from last place just to see the breaking news..

Without 90+ velocity, Masterson is a sitting duck. He needs to go to the pen. He should be the first rotation change.

Yup. Enough is enough.

I like the guy but he can not start any more games for the Sox.

He is pitching BP to opposing lineups.

Meanwhile the stiff that the A's ran out there dominated a weak Sox lineup.

This is disgraceful. Almost exactly like last year.

Masterson and Kelly are kaputski.

Excellent stuff! Lol!

I know everyone here dislikes knuckleballers, but I'd rather a knuckleballer who throws 80 mph over a someone like Masterson throwing 80. Seems like Steven Wright actually wants the job.

I don't dislike Knuckleballers.

At least the knuckleball has some movement.

Kelly at least is worth trying as a reliever/possible future setup man. Masterson is just a train wreck. Any offense that doesn't shell Masterson at this point deserves to have their clubhouse skunked.

I'm still in favor of a rotation house-cleaning. Move Kelly to the pen and leave Masterson at a gas station somewhere. Call up E-Rod and Johnson to take their places. Maybe get rid of one of Buchholz or Miley too and give Wright a chance in that spot*. It's not like we have a whole lot to lose, we're already the worst rotation in the AL, and it's hard to see where improvement will come from with Masterson and Miley serving up a constant stream of meatballs, and Buchholz and Kelly being total head cases.

* - I know Miley's extension likely prohibits such things. I'm too lazy to look up Buchholz's contract situation though.

In fairness to the Red Sox, for as long as I can remember they've been the kind of organization that will beat up the other team's ace one night and then get hosed by some random dickhead fresh from the Oregon wilderness the very next day.

I am not putting a lot of faith in the possibility that this bunch will regress/improve to any level that still isn't very bad. I think you are right. There is very little to lose by cleaning out 3 of the starters. They can wait until Memories Day to give this group a chance, but Masterson is out of chances. He needs to go to the pen ASAP or DFA.

I just can't see the Red Sox continuing with Masterson and Kelly. They've both gotten shelled the last couple weeks, and it doesn't seem like there is a chance of them improving. Buchholz is probably going to go later, because he means more to the organization, but he certainly won't last much longer either.

Do you think they will cut them or send them to the pen?
