Looks like the Red Sox have a mystery team in negotiations. The good ole Boras mystery team trick, how many billions has it cost teams over the years?

Anyone but the Yankees....

I have a question for you Pal. Let's say the Yankees offered the best package and those two players they dealt became sox regulars for the next 10 seasons. The deal, though, allows Lester to win a title in NY before signing in Seattle the following year. Is it worth it?

Doubront has a terrible work ethic and he seems to make excuses for himself. The national league could help his e.r.a with the 9th place spot being the pitcher.

Unless those players became stars, and help the Sox win 2+ championships, it wouldn't be worth it. It might take two lifetimes, but the goal always will be to catch up on championships.

If the Cubs get Doubront to buy in and he can reach his potential, he's a potential #2 starter with his mix of solid breaking ball and heat. I honestly think this is one of those change of scenery decisions that will decidedly work out better for Felix.

I can see your point. Few people question his talent. It's his brain that is his shortcoming.

I'm honestly just glad Doubront is off the roster. I cannot stand him

Great buy low move for the Cubbies. Doubront for basically zippo ... his command sucks, he has #2 stuff but the command means he probably won't me more than what he was a year ago. That said, three years of control for a potential #3/#4 starter for a bag of donuts is a very good move. Cubs are loaded with farm bats - not so much with guys who can soak innings up.

Looks like the O's are out on the Lester lottery.

What the Red Sox need very badly is a shot in the arm.......take Lester off the trading block and sign him to a new and lucrative contract. That might energize the team, but we know that will never happen because the guys are jumping ship and the rats are being left on board.....like Larry the Louse Luchintzyino who doesn't need a shot in the arm but a two by four to what passes for his brain. Now the news is that John Lackey has had enough and wants to be traded. Great work Cherington!!!!!! And there were those here who said all is fine and just have faith in the FO because they knew what they were doing. Haven't seen too many of that ilk around here lately, and for the record, the FO didn't know what it was doing. It was a total clusterf*** from the moment after the Red Sox won the WS last October 30. Their ineptitude knows no bounds.

Where did you hear this?

On Bosox Board, the other Red Sox site I post on, there was a post from someone with a friend in the organization who spilled the beans when they should have kept their mouths shut and it seems to have gotten out. The report is Lackey is pissed at the thought that they are not going to rework his contract and doesn't want to pitch for $500.000 next season, and if furious that the team has decided to trade Lester and is not intent on winning anymore. Where there's smoke there's fire and if this is true the whole edifice is coming crashing down.

You can't argue with that kind of iron clad bona fides.

I always love the "My friend said" or "I know a guy who in works in the organization and he told me.." sources. They are usually very reliable.

And at least one fan. The Lester trade wasn't just horrible because it was horrible, it's horrible because it says that the Sox brass are still dumb enough to think that next year can be salvaged, even without Lester. It's not going to happen. They need to reposition the team for 3 years from now. Focusing a lot of effort on trying to win the World Series next year is going to kill us in the long run. We don't have the star power on either side of the baseball to make a convincing run anytime in the near future and Cespedes is not going to change that, certainly not more than Lester did.

We need to stabilize the roster and wait for the kids to be ready. Cespedes doesn't help us do that, not unless he can play first base or right field, neither of which he has any experience in. How many kids are we going to throw into the fire because this team doesn't know how to make a 5 year plan and stick with it?

This is a disaster, not because of who was traded for whom, but because of why the trade was done at all.

We saw several -- several -- reports from teams being clear that they didn't want to trade away top prospects. Orioles said no on Bundy/Gausman. Cards said no on Taveras/Miller. Brewers said no on their top prospects. Pirates said no on everyone and everything Ben asked for. Dodgers said no. Oakland has been the only hungry team this deadline, and I am extremely surprised, but I get the feeling everyone else have been holding too tight on their prospects.

At best, maybe Ben could have gotten a top 50 guy and a top 100 guy, but who knows how they would have turned out. The aces and hammers don't come out of the back half of the top 100. He wanted a top 20 guy, and after the Shark trade, no one else was willing to shell out for two months of Lester. Cespedes is controlled, so he gives them options. They can flip him in the offseason, or next midseason for that top guy they were looking for. Or they can resign him.

I'm not sure that the Sox brass is aiming at the playoffs in 2015. To them, in my opinion, salvaging next year means pacifying the masses and putting butts in the seats. Getting Cespedes is one move ( likely among several ) that the Sox will make to accomplish this.

Meanwhile prospects continue to be accumulated and mature within the system.

Of course, like everyone here, I am speculating. This is my opinion.

I actually agree with you, that could be a part of their motivation, but me, I think that's even dumber. Red Sox fans are not idiots. They're too used to winners for a little bit of star power to sway them into watching a horrible team. At best it's damage control, and I resent having a guy like Lester traded away on that basis.

If the starting rotation consist of larry, moe, and curly then nobody will care about an outfield assist by cespedes or a hr blast in the green monster.

I refuse to believe the Sox brass are still on the Buchholz bandwagon, but it looks like they're going to need to smile and pretend that they are.

Andrew Miller to the Tigers. My guess is, they're picking up Prince Fielder's contract, and throwing in Xander, Owens, Betts and Swihart.

What? Fielder is on the shelf with Texas. Do you mean that the Sox are assuming what Detroit may be paying Texas towards Fielders contract? Is that even allowed?

I think that I missed some sarcasm in your post Pal!

No real confirmation yet haha.

I forgot about the Fielder trade -- who is the next worst contract on the Tigers that the Red Sox could trade for? Larry is getting too trigger happy right now.

The sox are 5 games up on the worst record in baseball. If they tank, they could theoretically get the top pick in the draft next yr

they dont' need to tank to do that. they can't score any runs, been last in the AL for most of the season.

Unless they get that #1 spot, its a pretty awful year to be a bad team. The Astros were unable to sign the #1 pick and will be locking up the #2 spot for next draft.

So now that the Sox have gotten rid of four starters, two of which were our only lefties, what is the Sox rotation for the rest of 2014?

In no particular order:

Bucholtz, Kelly, De LaRosa, then what? Workman? Webster?????

Will Renaudo be brought up now? What about a lefty? Owens is dominating in AA but is he ready??????

The Sox must be looking to acquire another MLB ready arm because I just don't see what they can do for this season let alone 2015 and beyond.

Maybe they will go get another big name arm like Cole ( cough, cough ) Hammels?

I'd love to see Price on the Sox!!! Hahahahahahahaha!!! He could have the locker next to Ortiz!!!!
