Wait, it gets better.

New York isn't done, either. Sources told Yahoo Sports the Yankees will continue to pursue the other pricey outfield client of agent Scott Boras, Shin-Soo Choo, along with the top free agent on the market, second baseman Robinson Cano. The Yankees believe they can sign one or the other, sources said, still have room to pursue a starting pitcher and stay within the $189 million luxury-tax threshold.

Ellsbury got the "injury prone" label pretty unfairly. He collided with a brick shithouse in Adrian Beltre one time and a player fell on him another. Those aren't nagging non-contact injuries. That's just s*** luck. He makes us a lot better in 2014. The life of the deal sucks, but that's the price of business I guess. He'll be a 20+HR hitter in our park. He'll steal 50 bases. He'll play good D. He was a 5.8 WAR player last yr when he was completely average per his career totals. Assuming good health, he should easily surpass that in 2014. If he doesn't make a long term transition to a power hitter, though, this deal will be a collosal bust. He needs to age akin to Johnny Damon and start to see his homers rise when his SBs fall. If that doesn't happen, then this deal is a waste. If it does, then this is an overpay but not a disaster.

Yeah, they aren't staying under the threshold. They couldn't afford Cano and stay under. Now with Ells and Cano? No way. If they can get Cano's head out of the clouds, f*** it, sign him. Then focus on pitching. We actually held together on the rubber until September. Bring back Kuroda, get Tanaka and see what we have in CC.

Do i need to dig up posts of you saying the exact opposite thing regarding Ellsbury's "injury prone" label? Jesus, you are an insufferable homer sometimes.

You wont find them recently anyway. His only 2 major injuries were contact related. I was saying this early on in the offseason and haven't strayed

Go for it. So you are denying that moving Ellsbury from a Fenway to Yankee Stadium for half his games will help him?

It'll help him, but I doubt it's going to increase his HR totals by 100%.

Dude he was injury prone. Even freak accidents count. I don't like the deal much at all, but let's see how what happens next. I think Gardner might have to be traded now. Just thinking out loud. Plus seeing what Gentry brought back for the Rangers.... I might deal Brett.

I would like to cite Chart 1, article 2a and 2b.

Signing|Yankees|This is the missing piece. We'll win 160 games, and the umps will screw us out of 2.

Signing|Sox|Risky move, overpaid here, they'll regret this.

I would also like to cite Chart 1, article 3a and 3b.

Injury|Yankees|They don't get hurt. Hypothetically, if they did, the recovery will be speedy with no impact to ability.

Injury|Sox|Everyone is a ticking time bomb. Once hurt, they'll never heal right.

Yankees sign Kelly Johnson for 1 yr $3 mil. He's a nice utility pickup and can hit homers. That lefty bat in this stadium should be a boon. He can play 3b as well should we not be able to find a suitable replacement for f***Rod

I don't see how Ellsbury's injury history is, in any way, predictive of what will happen in the future. The 'injury prone' label is thrown around way too often.

s***, they must be assuming they don't have to pay A-Rod this year. Nice of them to announce it LOL

Yankees grossly overpaid and over extended in terms of years on this contract for the long term. In the short term Ellsbury provides the Yankees with an immediate injection of speed, a defensive upgrade in centerfield and a gritty attitude that is missing from their lineup. Where this deal hurts the Yankees the most IMO is that it can hamper them in addressing their other glaring needs such as pitching, shortstop and third base. Ellsbury is a nice addition but not at the possible costs in these other areas. A new talent with the same results as 2013 unless they are able to address their other short comings.

I like this signing a lot. He's not a great player, but he could put up some solid numbers.

So the yanks are offering over$2 mil per yr more to Cano? Sounds fair

Lol. Cano is a much better investment as he'll perform longer into the deal then Ellsbury will. Midway through this deal Ellsbury will be useless with his declining speed.

useless ?

why is it wrong to think once he loses a step he can still hit close to 300 with some LH power in the stadium

Cano is a top 10 talent, Ellsbury isn't even a top 25 talent.

What is your criteria for determining rankings? You are comparing a second baseman and a center fielder. Are you saying Ellsbury is not in the top 25 center fielders in MLB? What are your talent categories; speed, power, defense? Are you using Bill James criteria?

Simply; Ellsbury will be making top 10 talent money when he's not even a top 25 talent. When Beltran signed with the Mets he was a top 10 talent in the game and got accordingly. Ellsbury is basically Michael Bourn and Michael Bourn got a 4 yr $48m last season. This is one of the worst MLB contracts ever; if this doesn't get Cash fired nothing will.

He won't hit 300 with declining speed, he had 17 infield singles last year.

If the Yankee's do not sign Cano you cannot justify this deal and I'll be glad as a Red Sox fan as that will not improve their team trading off Cano for Ellsbury.

They said the exact same thing about Ichiro when he broke in. It's a drastic overpay any way you slice it. For 3-4 years it may be ok if he stays healthy. The last 3 years are going to look awful.

The Yankees have so much money that they can manage to be competitive even with all their terrible contracts. Ellsbury is going to have a great 2014 season and if he stays healthy he will justify the contract. A big 'If' I know.

Ellsbury was purely a PR move. Hank and Hal are businessmen, they aren't giving up $50 million to go over the cap. This is just to try to distract fans from the fact that Cano is headed to Seattle.
