Overpaid terribly, but he does add the element of speed the Yankees are missing on the base paths. Teamed with Gardner that should significantly increase the stolen bases in 2014. He is definitely an upgrade over Granderson. By the way, I'm tired of hearing that the Yankees don't have a good farm system - they don't need one for outfielders the Red Sox have done a good job of supplying the Yankees with very serviceable outfielders of the last 10 years. :D

VA - It's been a while, thought I would check back in. Congratulations on the WS championship, it was tough to swallow here in St Louis, but I think the Cardinals are set for several years.

Speed doesn't justify that price tag, and he can only steal bases when he's actually on the field. LOL at another terrible contract and hopefully there's no LAD to come bail Cashman out in a couple of years.

I have one: ahahahahahahaha...

LMAOOOOOOO!!!! Classic. Ah, I'm going to enjoy watching the Yankees putting themselves right back over the barrel they just got away from. Morons.

There is an option for a 8th year. There are no words.

How about Insanity! Doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result.

Glad you did check it. As you can imagine.....Very happy about the WS this year!

Really wanted to win Game 6 against the Cards! Might have had a stroke if it went to Game 7 and....

Hope all is well with you and yours!!

True, hence the "overpaid terribly" statement. He adds an element of speed that the Yankees need and he is a pretty good center fielder.

Jacoby Ellsbury is in no way worth 153 million. It's weird how okay I am will this. I was hoping to sign him for 5 years at 100 million. Guess that was wishful thinking. Hope JBJ is ready to lumber up.

This will make the Yankees much better in 2014 offensively, but what have they done to make their s*** stain pitching better?

Nothing! They've over spent on offense. Apparently they didn't see what won the Red Sox the World Series, pitching.

Same as last year, not a thing!! That's the problem with the Yankees, they still don't understand that pitching wins championships or at least goes a long way in getting there. They ignored pitching last year and it appears they are tying their hands again with long term deals. Better hope they re-sign Kuroda and Pineda is healthy and the stud they thought he was when they traded for him. Sabathia is a big (no pun intended) question mark and there is not much on the farm. Been hearing about these studs in the minors for several years but none appear to be panning out to Major League ready.

Seriously, though - when is Cashman shown the door? He's one of the most overrated GMs in the game.

This doesn't feel like one of his moves. One of the owners must have wanted Ells.

I wonder if the Yankees will ever just hit the re-start button and start building their franchise from bottom up.

They did that once, Jeter, Rivera, Pettite, Posada - but most importantly a Steinbrenner was not calling the shots at the time. Will never happen as long as a Steinbrenner is calling the shots.

Interesting move. If the plan is for fiscal constraint, then this doesn't help. If the plan was to build an all star team regardless of cost, then this works. Pretty obvious we aren't getting under the cap now. f*** it, trade for cliff lee, sign Garza and Tanaka and trade for Headley while we're at it

Something that just occurred to me - they already pretty much have this type of player in Gardner, and then a poorer version coming off the bench in Ichiro. I don't even think Ells hits enough to justify this contract - only one full year at > .800 OPS. I guess if you look at WAR he had a good year this year, but his totals have been inconsistent throughout his career.

Its an awful contract. He's been averaging 3.5 WAR a year throughout his career, not a 150 million dollar guy. They're also losing an equivalent player in Granderson who probably will outperform him for the rest of his career.
