JJ's contract includes a 1.25 bonus if he makes more than 26 starts. It also kicks in a club option for $4 million for 2015 if he doesn't make more than seven starts.

Why the surprise? He sucked ass and was injured most of last year. He wasn't going to get much more than that on a pillow contract.

I'm surprised it was that much. He hasn't had an ace-like season since 2010. In the last few years, elbow surgery to remove bone spurs, forearm tightness, lost significant time to shoulder inflammation, triceps issues. He's wounded.

Not surprised given the market. Also, accepting that 4 million option if he lost the year probably had something to do with the value of the contract.

Fielder / kinsgler trade being discussed.

If I was the Rangers I'd back out of this one. Fielder with that massive contract wouldn't be worth it, considering his mediocre season.

Rangers and Detroit talking about a Fielder for Kinsler swap. The two teams that have ruled the American league the last few years trying to make a trade -- they must be afraid of the new contender.

The Tigers would probably have to kick in a s***-ton of money, and it still wouldn't make sense.

Fielder is still only 29 years old. If it wasn't for his father's career, why wouldn't you want the age 29-35 seasons of one of the most consistent power hitters in the majors?

Because he costs a s***-ton of money, and he isn't that consistent.

If the Tigers bite 25 million, he costs 20 million a year which really isn't that bad for his talent level. The guy puts up big numbers year after year. In the last five years he has played 162, 162, 162, 161, and 162 games. How do you get more consistent than that?

Palodios, you can play 162 games a year, but if your OPS fluctuates between .900-1.000 and mid-800's every year, are you really consistent? Not saying this is the case with Fielder, just illustrating that playing a lot of games and putting up consistent numbers are not the same thing.

Fielder is extremely talented, but as a 1B who's bad defensively and has had three straight years of declining OPS, this is an enormous gamble for Texas. His three-year decline is eerily similar to Teixeira, and no one would touch him with a ten-foot pole right now, would they?

Fielder is a high risk, especially playing in that heat.

As for Detroit, this is a good move for them. They need to dump that contract to re-sign Scherzer and give Cebrera a contract extension.

We're really just arguing the meaning of the term "consistent" at this point. He produces well above average numbers -- even on his off years -- and plays every single game.

Texeira is four years older, and hasn't been nearly as healthy. Three years of decline is a huge exaggeration -- his 2012 numbers were his 4th highest out of his 9 seasons. Although, a smart team would just DH the guy.

But they were lower than his 2011, and his 2013 numbers were even worse. He's trending in the wrong direction. Can't even argue that. He could pick it up in Texas, but it is a huge gamble the Rangers are taking.

Also, "well above average" doesn't cut it for a 1B who can't defend his position making 20 million plus a year. He's got to be elite to justify that kind of dough.

f***ing stupid trade for Texas unless the Tigers fork over a barrel load of cash - which would just underline the crass stupidity of giving a one-dimensional player that huge contract to start with. Time for teams to wake up and stop vastly overpaying and expecting videogame numbers each year.

The word is 30 million. Meaning 20 million a year for Fielder. 7/138 really isn't that bad for a good first baseman.

Edit: My bad, missed that last year.
