Victorino, Pedroia Awarded Gold Gloves

ESPN2 just handed out this years gold glove awards. In the American league it was nothing but orioles, royals, and red sox, and random ass R.A Dickey. Victorino with his fourth, and Pedroia his third.

Gold Gloves are entirely about reputation - and quite often a player won't win it until he becomes decent offensively. It's fun to see the mistakes (and there are some howlers - Adam Jones at CF????). Machado was the best defensive infielder in the league this year and Victorino was the best defensive OF in the AL - so at least the voters did not mess those ones up.

As i mentioned in the other thread, everyone who won a fielding bible award also won a GG. And aside from Jones, everyone was top three at their position per both FG and BB-Ref's dWAR. This is leaps and bounds better than previous years, and an obvious improvement.

snark aside - yes, the managers have gotten much smarter at this stuff. It is probably a reflection at how the defensive numbers ARE starting to matter in managerial decisions and such, and the expectation that managers understand what analytics is communicating.

Victorino was by far the best right fielder in baseball. I don't know about Pedroia, but if he wasn't the best 2B, then the statistics were just wrong.

For what it's worth, compiling statistical data to name the best fielder at his position is what fielding bible does, and Pedroia won the award.
