As of August 1st, 2004, the sox were second in the al east with a record of 56 and 47 and ended the season with an incredible 42 and 17 streak to end up with 98 wins to clinch a wild card birth(and of course would go on too break the 86 year old curse of the bambino by winning the ws).

As of August 1st , 2007, the sox were atop the al east at 65 and 42 and would finish the regular season by clinching the al east with 96 wins( and of course, the sox ended up winning the world series by sweeping the rockies).

As of August 1st , 2003, the sox were 63 and 45 and second in the al east. They ended the season with 95 wins to clinch a wild card birth but, with a tragic aaron boone hr off of tim wakefield in game 7 of the alcs, the sox would fail to make the ws.

Lastly, as of august 1st, 2011, the sox were 66 and 41 and at the top of the al east. And as we know, after a tragic loss to the orioles and improbable rays win on the last day of the season, failed to make the playoffs.

And now, with 11 walk offs under their belt, the 2013 red sox are 66 and 44 as of august 1st and are first in the al east.

Any comments on the make ups of these past teams and which team do you compare this 2013 sox team the most to?

My favorite season in recent memory (not including this one) was 2010... and while it probably isn't all that important, per say, that was the cornerstone season that this one is so similar to.

That was the year Pedroia broke his foot, and was trying to keep in shape by taking balls in the field from his knees. The stars like Youkilis, Beckett, Lowell, Papelbon, Ellsbury and Ortiz had either been hurt or underperforming all season.

It was a season about the non-stars. Daniel Nava's grand slam "was a great moment in what would be a very short major league career". Some of us had Darnell Mcdonald-mania, while others had "DFA DARNELL!" . Scott Atchison was the 7th inning guy, and bridge to Bard+Pap. Lackey toughed out quality start after quality start, and we never heard the end of bitching about him. Jed Lowrie had a .907 OPS, and earned the nickname "The Sexy Beast", and Scutaro was playing the field with a dislodged vertebrae. Every single player contributed, and there was always some 4A guy surprising us all with an amazing performance. It wasn't a year for pink hats... it was a year for baseball fans.

Last nights game was like the game in Fever Pitch when Jimmy Fallon's character misses that great Sox ninth inning rally. I too missed the great Sox rally having stopped watching the game with the Sox down 7-1 and King Felix still in the game. This was the baseball gods pay back for Monday. This team is starting to remind me more and more of the "Idiots".

The 2010 team. There has been a lot of part timers who have been key contributors. The team has had to scrap a LOT. The 2010 team missed the playoffs because the players who absolutely could not afford to get injured all did - yet they found 89 wins anyway.

2007 is not fair - that was a true juggernaut and the best team in baseball pretty much wire to wire. The Red Sox regardless of record do not have that level of quality this season.

2003-4 their lineup was otherworldly - also unfair

That is bizarre. I was watching the game, then turned it off to run to grab some food in the 7th. By the time I got home, it was the bottom of the 9th and I turned the game back on and that is the first thing that I thought after we won. At times this year, it has reminded in little ways of both the '04 and '07 seasons. I knew this team was good, but after last night, I just get the sense that there is something special about this team. A lot of young pitchers are stepping up. A lot of role players are stepping up. The stars (Ells, Big Papi, and Pedey) are more than holding their own, but without some of the younger guys and role players stepping up, there is no way in hell we would be where we are right now without them.
