Don't think the Sox will be in on any waiver trades. I think any changes to the roster will come from within. C- Ross is not to far away, 3B - Either WMB or Bogaerts as the current platoon has finally ran its coarse, P - The return of Buchholtz to the staff.

The Rays have added Delmon Young

Rays Sign Delmon Young To Minor League Deal

By Steve Adams

[August 22 at 11:35am CST]

The Rays have signed Delmon Young to a minor league, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Young will head to Double-A Binghamton as opposed to Triple-A Durham for the time being, based on his own personal preference (All Twitter links). The 27-year-old was released by the Phillies last week and will now return to the organization that selected him first overall in the 2003 draft. Young is represented by Joel Wolfe of the Wasserman Media Group.

Young batted .261/.302/.397 in 291 plate appearances for the Phillies this season before being released. Originally drafted by Tampa Bay, Young played just one full season there before being traded to the Twins in a trade that brought Matt Garza and Jason Bartlett to the Rays. Young enjoyed one strong season in Minnesota, but has failed to translate the tools that made him the No. 1 overall pick into consistent Major League production. In parts of eight big league seasons, he's a .283/.316/.423 hitter but also grades out as one of baseball's worst defenders in the outfield.

The Nats acquired him and put him on waivers immediately.

Looks like the Rays are busy trying to add anything that might help. The crappy thing is, they just might work.

I think the biggest additions for AL East teams will be players coming back from injuries. It might come down to who gets more out of their returning SP. The Sox and Buchholtz, or the Rays and Moore.

And Archer has also recently returned from the DL.

They have their own version of Moneyball going. TB is the second smallest market behind Oakland.

Kendrys Morales was claimed today by an unknown team.

I'm guessing Cleveland, Baltimore, or Kansas City. Kansas City, only because Dayton Moore won't admit his season is over.

Probably the Skanks for all we know.

Didn't think of that. That makes a lot of sense.

Although, I doubt the Yankees would give up anyone of significance for him. I've also read the Mariners are pretty keen on keeping Morales past 2013. How much is one month of Morales worth? He won't push them into the playoffs.

I really don't know how much the mariners value him but from what I've been reading on twitter is that he should go for a reasonable price.

The Mariners might be a bad enough organization to QO him in the offseason. Personally, I'd take a C- prospect for him.

Berry is a depth OF with some speed that got some playing time last season with the Tigers. Can't see him getting any quality time and may be used as a pitch runner.

Heh. For a last-man-in-the-bullpen, Mortensen actually did a pretty good job for the Sox during his tenure here:

50 g, 4.11 era, 104 era+, 1.37 whip, 7.7 k/9

A lot of teams have relievers that don't put up those kinds of numbers. I don't think he has a place on this team at this point so I'm not exactly grieving his departure, but he was a pretty useful guy to have around while he was here. No complaints from me.

Interesting small move - Berry is just a guy, but another outfielder is useful. If we get to a wildcard round, where we get a free roster reset, could easily see adding him (you don't expect to need 11 pitchers, or even 7 - for a one game playoff)

Good point. He has some speed and could be used as a pitch runner and for D-fence.
