Nava isn't a bench player anymore, has been hitting at the top of our lineup and starts almost every night and Iglesias hasn't been on the team for most the season.

Ill give you Carp, but the rest of the bench has been pretty brutal in Ciriaco, Gomes and Ross.

JBJ was called up specifically to man LF in NYY. Victorino is scheduled to come off the DL on the 5th.

Not sure if by 'this series' you meant Philly or NYY, but he won't be back until the 5th.

This series means the current series, which is NYY.

Ross is a first-D player, and he's delivered in that department. Ciriaco's been bad, but Gomes, for all he's been maligned, has spent all year delivering quality AB's and getting on base. And for the record, Nava is a platoon player starting because Victorino is injured. That's indisputable.

Once Victorino and WMB come back, the bench will look like:

Nava

Gomes

Carp

Iglesias

Ross

Pretty damn good if you ask me.

You mean Nava/Gomes depending on the pitcher, no?

Or are you assuming that Bradley sticks and starts?

I'm referring to Nava/Gomes as a platoon.

I wish they'd give JBJ a chance to win the job though.

I'm sorry, what does this have to do with Taylor Swift? I was under the assumption that we could only talk about her in gamethreads?

It seems as though a renaming of this site to TalkTaylor might be in order.

Maybe instead of renaming the site we could put the breaks on the Tatylor talk juuuuuust a bit. I mean she's hot, and we know you like her, but come on.

load that lineup with LHd hitters in NY. You don't have to be fussy.

remarkable how Iggy keeps hitting. how long will they go with Drew at SS?

All season as long as he's not injured.

Load the lineup with lefthanded hitters against CC Sabathia? Could you perhaps censor yourself once in a while?

That's pretty disputable. Even with Nava's platoon weaknesses, usage patterns tell us that he's our starting left fielder when Vic gets back and the question is how to set the bench up to support him on the right side. Farrell seems to really appreciate Nava's advanced hitting approach, and it's not hard to find a spot in the lineup for a guy with an OBP of over .400 on the season.

Now that could change, but reality suggests that that's what has been happening so far.

Oh my God. Could you take off the Nava homer glasses for a second? It's a platoon, and "usage patterns" are very clear in that regard. It's not a knock on Nava, but they're paying Gomes good money to hit LHP, and a rough two months is not enough to overlook several seasons of success against them. It doesn't help that Nava has an enormous platoon disparity vs righties (.931 OPS) and lefties (.711 OPS).

When the OF is fully healthy, Nava starts vs RHP, and Gomes against LHP. That is the very definition of a platoon.

Even if you were exactly right, if you picked which half of a platoon was the "starter" you're always going to pick the lefthanded half. The platoon partner who has a crack at 400 at bats on the year is the lefthanded partner because there are far more righthanded starting pitchers (roughly 4 to 1). Not rocket science. So I take some umbrage at defining Nava strictly by the fact that they're pushing Gomes in to hit against lefties. I believe in calling a spade a spade, and I believe that calling the guy who starts in left field 4 nights out of 5 when everyone's healthy "the starting left fielder." I'd feel the same way if it was JBJ instead of Nava (which it could very well have been if JBJ had gotten off to a better start this year)

It's expecially comical when you take a serious look at the splits. Gomes is outperforming Nava against lefties by what, .018 OPS? Yeah, that's a real edge he gives us in those big games against CC Sabathia

Nava is your starting left fielder, and the only reason they're even staggering along with the platoon is because they are in fact "paying Gomes good money."
