He hit the wall very hard. Bruised ribs will put you on the shelf for a while too. They don't need to be broken. It will hurt like hell when he swings. He was a gamer to stay in the game after the injury. That's more than the pampered princess Ellsbury would have done. I guess this means that Nava will be the everydau RFer for a while. Hopefully, he keeps up the good work in the field and he continues to hit. I expect that Carp and Gomes wil share LF. Our OF D will take a hit in Victorino's absence.

Looks like all the tests came back positive in the real world sense, as in negative for any broken bones or problems.

Still, I'm sure he's sore as crap.

He's been an outstanding player thus far for the Sox (in terms of WAR, a top 11 OF in all of MLB, and top 30 offensive player in all of MLB). According to Fangraphs, he's been worth $7mm this year so far. His 1.4 WAR is only 0.1 behind Robbie Cano and Pedey.

Very pleasant surprise. His defense has been outrageous.

One thing sure, I wouldn't trade him straight up for Cody Ross at the moment.

I think Gomes is supposed to be Cody Ross?

Yeah that whole Gomes vs Ross thing has backfired so far.

Also, it's strange but UZR absolutely loves center fielders turned corner outfielder, and thus WAR also loves them.

Thus far I think it's a bit misleading. Cody Ross is .281/.333/.382/.715 and Jonny Gomes is .194/.346/.339/.685

They are about a month apart in age, and Ross is on a 3/$26M deal with a $9.5M option with a $1M buyout. Gomes is here for 2/$10M. Unless Ross is a much better fielder than Gomes (which could be) I don't think it's worth the extra year at the higher price.

That said, there's a much bigger difference in how they are hitting lefties, which would be our ideal usage or Gomes/Ross.

Cody Ross is .400/.471/.600/1.071 in 30 AB's vs. lefties.

Jonny Gomes is .188/.366/.438/.803 in 32 AB's vs. lefties.

Ross was never a good hitter away from Fenway, just look at hit splits last year -

Home: .298/.356/.565, 13 HR in 66 G

Away: .232/.294/.390, 9 HR in 64 G

That's a .921 OPS at Fenway and a .684 OPS away, so I can't say I'm shocked he's not performing for Arizona.

Once again, Chest XRays are 50% sensitive for rib fracture and a hairline rib fracture is undetectable on XRay. If they were really concerned, an MRI, CT or PET scan would have been better

Why didn't he get a QO? It's just 13M if he accepts.

It probably wasn't worth it for a platoon 3.5th OF. In addition to his bad home/away splits, he also had bad LHP/RHP splits. Victorino got $13M, so I don't see Ross being worth the same.

He would have accepted it instantly. He got less than 9mm AAV and that was more than the Sox wanted to give. The Sox wanted him for about what they gave Gomes, maybe 2/14. They weren't going to pay him 13.3mm

I'd be shocked if they didn't learn their lesson on ribs after the Ellsbury mishap. And I would be even more shocked if they didn't send him in for an MRI

Based on rotoworld, all they did was XRays. I could be wrong. By the way, big ups to Middlebrooks. He is playing with a dislocated rib. That s*** hurts a lot

The Fenway right field wall is somewhat of a menace. I remember in 2007 JD Drew and the immortal Bobby Kielty both got hurt slamming into it. You'd think they'd be able to make some of these walls with a little better padding.

I'd like to see them raise the wall like 3' and if that means moving the fences in a few ft to compensate for the hitters so be it. Having a fence at that height is the worst for players. The impact is similar to the "hospital pass" hit in rugby. And no I'm not a doctor, but I did watch Sport Science last night.

Yeah, absolutely, the height of that wall is a big part of the problem. It's the perfect height for inflicting damage on the body.

If they raise the wall, they'd have to reconfigure the RF seats. And why would they move the fence in further? It's a terrible idea.

Ya I thought about it a little more and the RF seat issue would be a size able job just to change the RF wall for safety reasons. Be nice to see them do something though. Fenway's RF wall is probably one of the more dangerous walls in most MLB parks. Some more padding at least.

Remove the RF bullpen wall and replace it with 3 1/2 ft beanbag structure.

I was thinking maybe a blow up castle wall

Even better. And on Old Timers Day Bob Stanley could pop it like he used to pop all those beach balls during hi playing days.

We should pad it with the stuff they put in those crazy people rooms. Either that or Nerf. We should also change the baseball to a Nerf ball and the bat to a Nerf bat.
What about nerf covered with velcro?
