Hey, you know what? If closer turns out to be our biggest issue this year then that'll mean that we're in excellent shape. There are far bigger problems to have than a bad closer.

Just install Uehara in there and watch them automatic saves.

OMG with the Papelbon crap. Just install Uehara in there and watch them automatic saves.

40-50 mil for4 years of a guy who throws 70 innings a year? Screw that noise.

I'd prefer we use Uehara as the designated "clean up other people's s***" guy. I don't wanna keep him on ice just to get some 3 run platter save in the 9th.

Plus, bailey blew it today but its just one game and we still have to get hanrahan healthy. We definitely have options.

I don't quite think people get it. Bunch of teams turning farmhands into succesful closers. Why can't the Sox do it too?

It's true. You can't ignor it.

You were already paying him, what? 12M/yr?

yup, you can't ignore it. 1-2 L this year could mean everything reason why closers are so important these days.

Or just throwing some journeyman into there and catching lightning in a bottle. A la Jim Johnson or Fernando Rodney

Plus if we switch Uehara to the 9th and Hanrahan/Bailey in the middle innings, we might not have a lead by the time they blow it so Uehara wouldn't have anything to save.

Not to mention if our offense can't give us many runs...

Yet there are a bunch of succesful closers making league minimum. The "pay for saves" mentality is flawed beyond repair.

The last three WS champions have had closers brought in from the system that didn't make significant money.

They should have done it with Bard. But, no, they had to screw him up and try to turn him into a starter. Now he's in double A.

Wait, what? Bailey had been lights out until today, and so has Tazawa.

Now this i can agree with.

Case in point: Johnsonn was drafted and developed by the Orioles. He was a failed starter who became a shutdown reliever, a la Mariano.

We might have to put a check mark next to this ump crew. They have been a little shop of horrors all three days which is rare. Usually their is a bright spot somewhere. They have done OK by us on balance which is why I will not want to see them again. This stuff tends to balance out.

Not this year it hasn't. The umpiring has been horrible to the point where some people have had to suspend their disbelief.
