Losing the no-no is probably the best thing for the team anyway. No sense in ruining the team's best arm.
I was relievd when the no-no was broken up, I didn't want Buch on the mound for 125-130 pitches-- not this early in the season.

Much better than last season. Today a perfect CLAY DAY, 11 K's is fantastic. I'm sorry but I'm not so sure about Stephen Drew, I'll prever Iglesias.

Just getting home from the game now. Few things:

1. Buchholz looked a lot better in person than on TV. I watched some highlights on the way home, and he looked like he left a lot of pitches over the plate.

2. The buzz in the crowd increased after every inning when Buchholz was still going with his no-hit bid. I was hoping and hoping for a no-no, because I believe that I said that I expected a no hitter in yesterday's game thread.

3. Drew can't hit.

4. Napoli's double was much closer to a grand slam than it appeared on TV. Once again, I watched the highlights on the way home (I wasn't driving).

5. The force out at the plate in the third inning was clearly a blown call.

6. My seats were in the perfect position down the third base line. 10 rows from the field, behind the Rays dugout. We were protected from the wind, so it felt a lot warmer than it really was.

7. BTR has some really good mojo and I thank him for snapping the Sox 3 game losing streak when I go to games.

8. I was going to bring a "Hi Talksox" sign like many of you suggested, but I was in a rush when I went out the door this morning. If I did, I might have needed a TBS or NESN acronym to get on TV.

Do we all still think it's just a coincidence that the last time Farrell was here, Lester and Buch were outstanding. And now, this year, they're a combined 5-0, 0.88 ERA so far??

He's having a huge impact.

I see it more being about determination, preparation and having a better line of communication with coaches. These guys were in spring training weeks early and working hard to get everything right.

Is Buchholz performing any worse than he did the second half of last year? He was lights out in the second half last year, and he's just building off of it. I also think that most of baseball had seen Lester's mechanics and knew there was a problem-- but the coaching staff was such a mess last year that nothing got done with it.

That being said, as someone who NEVER liked Farrell here as a pitching coach, he was the right pick for manager here

You have no honor if you welch on a sig bet.

This is true. BTR, if you are reneging on a signature bet, you are neither a member in good standing of this site nor a particularly decent human being. If I recall correctly, even Jacko has held up his end of one of these agreements, and as a Yankees fan his sense of honor and decency hovers somewhere between "Berkowitz" and "Romulan".

You're generally a pretty cool guy, and I'd hate to have to change your signature for you.

There is no question that Farrell has had a major positive impact. I don't think I read posts from folks contesting that. However I don't read every post.

There are some elements outside of Farrell's control that have also helped I am sure. I suspect that as important as the guy that is here is the guy or guys that are gone. Beckett had become a truly negative influence on the other pitchers and his position on the team made him hard to ignore. More importantly while Farrell is a competent, good manager, he was replacing the complete and utter antithesis of competent and good as a manager. At the point in time when the Sox hired him, Bobby V may well have been the worst managerial candidate available as opposed to the best. He was quite possibly the only manager in my history of watching baseball that has forced me to acknowledge how damaging he was to his team of players. In fact Beckett while not being a positive influence probably enjoyed even greater influence with the pitchers since the manager's office was such a black hole of deceit, deception and incompetence. In truth, as often as we have given the Sox, their players and their organization a pass, the biggest pass ever granted was the pass granted for having brought V here. I think we were all so happy to see him go that we just did not care to truly offer up the degree of criticism the Sox deserved for bringing V here. May they never again convince themselves that the opportunity to hire a caretaker for the manager's position also affords them the opportunity to bring somebody in that draws even more media attention than you would expect for a MLB team, especially the Sox.

Lastly. both guys, Lester and Buch were likely as ready as they could be to turn a corner. Farrell and Nieves got them at just the right time, when both players were motivated to live up to their potential. I think both guys feel like they had dicked around long enough. While they had both enjoyed OK careers to that point, neither has really done more than whet both their and our appetites for more. I would not want to leave the impression that IMO the god of pitching coaches arrived and rescued these two guys from themselves. I think their own contributions to their turn arounds are as important as Farrell's and Nieves'.

I think Lester is set. As long as he stays healthy I think he will have a great year. I don't expect him to go sawing through opposing hitters like he has so far for an entire season but I think he will have few off days and his health history is excellent. The only question for Buch is the one about taking the ball for an entire season.

Thunder, the call on the force out was right. It was not a blown call.

I couldn't see it well from where I was. The replay on the videoboard looked like he got in there.
