Dempster's strike zone plot from last night:

http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/cache/location.php-pitchSel=133225&game=gid_2013_04_04_bosmlb_nyamlb_1&batterX=&innings=yyyyyyyyy&sp_type=1&s_type=.gif

Like I said last night, he did not throw many pitches in the middle at all. He was living on the edges quite a bit.

Two of his runs last night came from this:

http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/cache/location.php-pitchSel=133225&game=gid_2013_04_04_bosmlb_nyamlb_1&batterX=16&innings=yyyyyyyyy&sp_type=1&s_type=3.gif

He threw a pitch 4 inches outside that Overbay closed his eyes and blooped into the right spot.

He threw much better than his line. He threw 73.9% of his first pitches for strikes, which is an astronomical number. He also had 14.9% swing and misses, which is also extremely high. 8 K's in 5 IP is crazy good.

He got beat by a broken bat single (Hafner) one bad pitch (Nunez) and a close-my-eyes-and-swing blooper (Overbay). Oh, and the 312 foot homerun to Gardner that would have been a flyout at Fenway.

I'm not taking anything away from the Yankees last night, just thought this was interesting. This is Fenway Park overlayed on top of Yankee Stadium:

If the Sox game last night was played at Fenway, I would guess the Sox win that game, as Gardner's ball doesn't go out and Ross's is at least a wall ball double.

Then again, if the Sox played game 1 at Fenway, Cano's blast to LF would have been gone too.

Just funny to think about how the MLB is the only sport (outside of golf) that has different dimensions at every park.

This is going to be a very tough series. It was only a matter of time till the Jays found their offense. Doubront will have to be good and the offense will have to be even better to win this series. Toronto puts alot of runs up period. Hopefully our offense is up to the test and can match them. Ill be missing the first three innings due to work unfortunately. But ill be able to catch the rest.

If Dempster continues to leave so many pitches up I don't care how far off the plate they are, the enemy will continue to get bitch hits and we will complain that they were bitch hits not realizing that the bitch hit and most hits for that matter begin with a mistake by the pitcher. If he continues at a rate of about 6-7 free passes per game those bitch hits will come with runners on and they will score (see initial comment about bitch hit complaints).

If he continues like this his "impressive" line will end when he pitches against a team that actually has ML hitters in the lineup. He MUST keep the ball down really much like Cook must keep the ball down to succeed. There are differences between the two. Dempster is not Cook. But if he tries to live up in the zone like he did last night, he will lose and badly.

I should add that using the size of the park you are in to support or defend a pitcher in ML baseball really does not make much sense. ML pitchers pitch to the park they are in. They pitch to keep the ball in the big parts of the park if they rely on fly ball outs. If they can't do that then the ball reaches the seats. It is just that simple. If anything I was more pissed that a stinker of a Yankee team hit....what....three HR's in three games in that bandbxx and we hit how many.....

I agree his walks absolutely crushed him yesterday. Mainly because he didn't have any FB command, a pitch that he's historically had great command of. I think he threw less than 50% of his FB for strikes. Can't be doing that.

We'll see. Cut down on the walks, which his career shows that he's got good control, and he'll be fine. I'm encouraged by the outing.

Baseball parks are a very interesting aspect of the sport. I enjoyed seeing that picture. The only thing missing is showing how tall that left field wall is in Fenway. It is a lot harder to get over then it looks in the overlay.

I think I'm more interested in this series then the last one. I kinda figured the Yanks would struggle with their lineup and the Sox could take a couple from them. Toronto is supposed to be the measuring stick in the AL East this season(even though I have predicted it not working out with that roster).

Should see some Sox HR at the Sky dome.

Exactly :dunno: :(

i had a dream that Gomes played 1B then I woke up and was like, wut?

I wonder if they're going to try to work Brentz out at first base. It would be a way to get him on a path to crack the roster now that the outfield looks so clogged.

Napoli, he is a terrible terrible defender but i am hoping his bat is going to make up for it a little. lets give him some time.

Gomes at 1B hmm in a dream, atleast it wasnt Salty.. :o

Of course of course. Napoli needs to provide us with more samples in order size him up.

4/5 at TOR: Ellsbury CF, Nava DH, Pedroia 2B, Napoli 1B, Salty C, Middlebrooks 3B, Victorino RF, Bradley Jr. LF, Iglesias SS, Doubront P; Boston Red Sox (@RedSox)

(cannot embed tweets here?)

I like this lineup a lot. Especially so if Salty continues his unprecedented patience.
