Jacko, I think we have to acknowledge that the Yankees are a bit fortunate to be where they are at this point in the season. The offense is pretty bad and the advanced stats suggest the starting pitching has benefitted from good luck. In all likelihood this version of the Yankees, if they played an entire season, would not make the playoffs. That point, which I think is the crux of the argument that some others are making, is a fair one.

On the other hand, I think it's also important to acknowledge that this team has the potential to be very good, as the currently injured players return to good health. There are obviously question marks surrounding some of them, if not all of them, but if enough of them perform up to reasonable expectations (which, in my opinion, there is a decent chance of that happening) this probably is a playoff team.

You mean the Bruins? Who gives a f***. It's May, who cares about a game played on a frozen pond only in Canada.
Hockey is such a suck ass sport that it is the only major sport without a National Network TV contract. No one watches it and no one cares.

My point about luck wasn't so much about the Yankees playing above their level (according to peripherals), but it was that the Yankees were lucky that players such as Overbay, Hafner, Wells (outcasts from other teams way past their primes) are hitting like they are in their primes again. Obviously the Yankees have been unlucky enough to have to rely on those players, but they are lucky they aren't buried in the division, let alone leading it.

I hate hockey 99% of the time, but in a rivalry game, and in a playoff series it's epic. Especially overtimes. Otherwise, yeah, it's the 4th sport at best.

Yeah, and that's absolutely fair. But I also think the pitchers have performed better than they've deserved, which is the point that SR was making. All of that is reasonable, and it needs to be pointed out in the context of this discussion.

I will say, though, that Overbay hasn't exactly been that great. In his case, the narrative stretches past reality. .326 wOBA and 100 wRC+ coming into today is mediocre on its own, and pretty bad when you consider that he's a first baseman.

The same can be said about the loss column.

I think he's had more clutch hits (especially come from behind HR's) than many teams.

Maybe, but that sort of anecdotal evidence isn't the best tool for evaluation. I'll take a player who will put up superior numbers over a player that will put up inferior numbers but has a few more big hits late in games.

Yeah lol, all joking aside A-Rod's postseason struggles are a bit overblown. He has had some great series, some good series, some mediocre series, some subpar series, and some bad series. By his standards, a bit disappointing, but on the whole not really that terrible.

I don't think there are too many Red Sox fans that would object with the idea that the Yankees are a good team that is going to make a serious run at winning the division. It's the "the Red Sox are peaking", "they'll be a .500 team by the All-Star break" nonsense that I take issue with. That kind of stuff is antagonistic drivel, I wouldn't want to read it even if I was a Yankees fan. I understand why Yankees fans are excited, their team has had a lot of injuries and they're still a game ahead of the Red Sox. But the Red Sox have also outpitched the Yankees according to WAR, xFIP and FIP and they've played better defense according to UZR over a nearly 4,000 inning sample size. Those things aren't going to change because the Yankees get some of their injured position players back. So perhaps it's time for some or the more antagonistic Yankees fans to come to terms with the idea that this isn't 2012 anymore and the Red Sox are also a good team that could make a serious run at the division. Or at the very least make criticisms of the Red Sox that display an intelligence level above that of a four year old.

You guys whine far too much. It's a baseball game and both of our teams were expected to be in the cellar and we're the top dogs in the division. Enjoy the banter while it lasts

Whining is what we do best. There is always an excuse or an explanation when we suck, and we always over-rate our team when it is doing well. Both of our teams have been fortunate that Tampa's pen has turned to s*** and blown so many games in the late innings and that David Price has been terrible.

Lmao, I hate Divinity. He only shows his face when the Yankees do good. Show your face when they lose, you coward. Thank god Yankees228 is realistic and realizes that this Yankee team is not as good as they're showing. I least I show myface whether we're in first or last place. Wait until your retirement home team start to look like bad news bears. I bet both of you don't show your face, after I attack the s*** out of both of you dickheads when the Yankees come back to form.

Divinity reminds me of Gom in many ways. I don't hate them as people, but I can't say I'm a fan of their posting habits/styles.

That said Divinity was pretty clutch in the redrafts so that earned him respect in my book. Although being a Pats/Yankees fan is a little weird, especially for someone not from CT.

I'm not sure that'll ever happen. The Yankees have enough money to buy them out of whatever problems they get into. Kind of like the Kennedys and the Kardashians.

Ever since 2008 happened, I don't believe this anymore.

CC is much better today than he was in his previous two starts. Velocity still not there, and it might never be, but he's locating all three pitches nicely.
