This is really strange. His side of the story is that she was an internet girlfriend whom he had never met. Either he's gullible (he is a Mormon afterall), complicit, or a complete moron.

Except that he said on numerous occassions that he met her in person and called her on the phone everyday...

My completely off base guess is that he's gay, in a relationship with Tuiasasopohoweveritsspelled and is unable to admit it to his family. In order to get them off the smell, he said he had a gf but needed to change the story once his family really wanted to meet her. Outlandish for sure, but it's no less plausible than everything else about this story.

This story is nuts. It sounds like he has been the victim of a hoax. idk what to think, mvp has a point where it could be something more deeply layered, or maybe Lane Kiffin had a grudge for him skipping out on USC and he hired an actress :lol:

This story is nuts. It sounds like he has been the victim of a hoax. idk what to think, mvp has a point where it could be something more deeply layered, or maybe Lane Kiffin had a grudge for him skipping out on USC and he hired an actress s*** is crazy and unfortunately eating up a lot of time on sportstalk radio this morning.

Te'o is no victim. He's involved in this somehow. In an article on the Notre Dame website from awhile back, his dad stated that he brought her to Hawaii for vacation a couple of times. That story has since been removed from the site.

Te'o had stated in the past that he's met her, but later backtracked on that, saying he only knew her online and through phone calls.

I am not quite sure why this is such a scandal that it is the lead story of every news show. If he made up the whole story and it put him over the top to win the Heisman, that would be a scandal. He didn't win the Heismanl, so why is this garbage front page news. If this was his doing, what did he do?

He made up a girlfriend with a fictional life.

Other athletes beat, abuse and sexually assault woman, girlfriends and wives, but that isn't the lead story on every news show.

He made up a story that his fictional girlfriend got into a very serious car accident.

Other athletes get DUI'd and DWI'd fairly regularly and some even cause fatalities, but that is never the lead story on every news show.

He made up a story that his fictional girlfriend died of leukemia.

A KC Chief Player killed his girlfriend and himself and that story would have fast faded from the news cycle except that Bob Costas turned it into a gun control issue.

Why the heck does this stupid story have such legs?

Yeah, that is pretty sad. I think it has everything to do with his popularity as a player, and how big of a deal they made out of his girlfriend dying.

If you are famous, everything you do is going to be magnified by your fame. I mean, when SHE died, it was all about him back then. No one tried to go find out anything about her, her family, or tried to get a story. It was about Manti Te'o who was playing like a trooper.

It's good to know we live in a nation that cares so much.

Because it's drama, and because reporting is really easy. Just repeat what Deadspin said and throw in some conjecture based on dates of interviews. Also, because this is a more unique story than an athlete beating up a woman - sorry to say, but that happens too often as it is to be considered top news any more.
