They have the sox going with SD State 3b Kris Bryant, a massive kid with big time now power and good hands. Probably profiles more as a 1b due to his size, but his bat is big time. Let's see how this stacks up come June after this kid finishes out his season in SD.

They have the Yankees going with a HS OFer from MN named Ryan Boldt, a lefty with a sweet swing, but I know nothing else about him

The draft order will be interesting. BTW, I am basing money on last yrs slot values which will likely rise a little this yr.

The sox will have picks as follows

#7, #48, #86, #116, #146, #176, #206, #236, #266, #296. That leaves them with 10 picks and a slot amount of $6.14 million.

The Yankees will have picks as follows (assuming Soriano signs elsewhere)

#27, #34, #35, #69, #106, #136, #166, #196, #226, #256, #286, #316. That leaves them with 12 picks in the first 10 rounds and a slot amount of $7.15 million

Haha, Bryant is pretty damn slow.

Nice idea for a thread. Baseball draft is a little more interesting now and learning about they guys heading into the draft will be good.

The Sox lack a big power threat at 1B in the minors. So I wouldn't be upset by that pick. Althoug it depends on what P is also available. Whats the P pool look like for this draft? Any pre season stand outs?

I don't know a whole lot about how the draft works etc. so I'm going to pop on in here and learn. I need to pay more attention to minor league stuff anyway.

It's going to be interesting. The sox really have one pick to make that could entirely change the direction of their future while the Yankees have multiple picks with which to try not to f*** up.

The question becomes, do the sox overdraft at slot 1 with a guy they know would take something like $1 mil and then re-allocate the other $2 million to players later in the draft?

It's all going to come down to who is available. I can see them overpaying on the #7 pick if it's an very high upside type player. Which there should be as all I have heard/read is that it's a deep class this year.

If I had to bet, I'd say the Sox sign a college pitcher, best left on the board.

It's really hard to overpay your top pick though. A lot of the overpaying will come with guys lower down because you underpaid your top guy.

Also, Bryant is getting some looks as the top guy in the draft alongside Appel now. He might not be available, but big frames with massive power and a plus hit skill are not standard. This kid could very well be your anchor at 1b for yrs to come

Yup could be. Looking forward to the draft this season.

New mock draft with updated draft positions. They have Austin Wilson (a guy who was considered #1 as recent as 3 weeks ago) slipping to the sox at #7.

They have the Yankees nabbing a trio of prep players, 2 of which has been top 10 draftees in other mocks in JP Crawford and Jonathan Denney. They also have then nabbing Brett Morales.

Here's a list of guys I have seen attached to the sox pick at #7 over the last month

Jonathan Crawford RHP Florida- mid 90s heat, plus slider

Reese McGuire C Wash HS- top defensive catcher in draft class, plus potential bat

Kohl Stewart RHP TX HS- athletic, power arm with a solid 3 pitch arsenal

Karsten Whitson RHP Florida U- Power arm coming off an injury. #9 pick 2 yrs ago, spurned the Pads

Kris Bryant OF SDU- Best college power hitter, most mocks are seeing him move into the top 3 of late, though

I dont know. Wilson had been a consensus #1 coming into 2013, but he is slipping into the Sox range on a lot of mocks, and some even are seeing him slip past #10. He's your prototypical 5 tool OFer, I dont know why he's slipping

Is he a no sign risk? Wonder who his agent will be?

I doubt he's a no-sign risk as a college junior, but he was the top rated guy coming into the yr and sounds like a Carlos Gonzalez type player, so I dont know why they'd have him slipping unless he's injured.

The latest mocks have the sox taking Clint Frazier, a HS OFer from Georgia or Bobby Wahl, a RHP from Ole Miss. Frazier has been in the top 10 now for a month, but no SRs on him. Bobby Wahl is a big RHP capable of hitting the high 90s with a plus slider and developing change.

The 3 Yankee first rounders have seen a lot of change, with NY mostly attached to prep players

I like this Reese McGuire kid. He's slated to go a little later in the first round than the Sox pick, but he's got a pretty fluid swing. Probably the best catcher in the draft, at least for HS prospects. There's always the chance they could try and develop him into a 1B, he's got good size too 6'1 - 190

I'm seeing John Denney being named as the top catcher as well. They both sound pretty similar except their handedness when hitting. Both sound like guys capable of sticking to the position. I've seen McGuire going mostly in the first half of the draft with Denney projected as high as 13 and as low as 32 to the Yankees

Yeah he seemed pretty comfortable at the position from what I saw. Of course professional level catching is a whole different ball game. I was just saying if needed I suppose to he could be trained at first, but yes i'm sure he does have what it takes to stay with his natural position. Surprisingly the draft seems to be fairly deep with catchers

His stock may have fallen because he already passed up first round money when the Cardinals tried to sign him out of high school. I'm glad we have a high pick this year and not a bunch of sandwhich picks, this is one of the weakest drafts we've had in a while.

I know you are gone, but will be back...

I doubt his stock took a hit with the first round turn down when he was in HS. He's a college junior now and the kid crushes the ball.

Also, your comment was obviously directed at the Yankees, nice subtlety. This yr's draft is short on the top talent and deep on the middle of the 1st round kind of players. There may only be a handful of guys who you know will be good and no real superstars in the draft unlike years past. But there are a lot of players in that #15-#25 range for most seasons, so having multiple picks should be somewhat of a boon. The sox should fall into the range where they can get a guy who should be a big leaguer without a doubt.

You're probably right about Wilson.

As for later in the round talent, the Yankees don't have any picks in the 15-25 range and with the new system less players will be falling to them. This is not the year you want to be picking over the sloppy seconds of the teams with high picks. The talent pool's just too shallow.

Dutch, this is where I disagree. The top 15 picks in the draft have something like a 60% chance of making the majors. Picks 15-30 have a 30%-ish chance of making it. There arent too many guys who would fit into the top 15 list compared to years past. But there are a lot of guys who would fit into the 15-30 range of years past if you get my drift. There may only be 8 players who would otherwise have been classified as a top 15 player in years past. There may be 30 guys who would fit into the #15-30 range in years past. The field once you get past the Meadows', Manaea, Appel's, Bryant's of the draft drops off to a level that it stays at for another 30 picks or so. There is a lot of depth in this draft, just not a lot of guys who profile as franchise stalwarts
Posted
Of course you disagree bbdoc, you think Austin Romine is the next Russell Martin in his prime. You are dramatically overly optimistic when it comes to the draft and Yankees prospects. The reason there isn't a lot of difference between the field after the 30th pick or so is because they're all pretty mediocre. There is NOT a lot of depth in this draft.

The most recent mock I have seen has Austin Wilson slipping to 8th. I've seen him as low as 12th. There is no way in God's green earth that he should get past the sox. They'd be out of their f***ing minds if they pass on this kid.

The most recent mocks have the sox snagging Austin Meadows, HS OF from Georgia. He has the talent to be the #1 overall pick and can stick in CF supposedly in the bigs. He'd be a big get.

The Yankees are predicted to select Rob Kaminsky, a HS Lefty from NJ. He tops out in the mid 90s and has potentially the best curve in the draft.

As for the comp rounds, the Yankees are predicted to select Billy McKinney, a HS OFer from Texas who has the potential to develop power and be a good COF with an innate good eye.

They also are predicted to select RHP Casey Shane, a HS pitcher from Texas. He's a big bodied right hander with a power sinker, a knockout curve and good command thus far.
