For the Yankees, everyone has Rob Kaminsky going to the Yankees with their first pick. I just don't know how a HS LHP with a mid 90s fastball and a knockout curve lasts to 26. If he does, I'll be ecstatic. The last 2 picks are all over the board from Manaea, Crawford and Denney (3 guys who were top 10 just a week ago) to guys like Anderson, Jagielo, Wahl, etc who are all profiled either end of the 1st or out of the 1st round. If Crawford or Denney fall to the 32 or 33 pick, the Yankees would be f***ing retarded to pass on them. Crawford might be the best prep SS and Denney is the second best prep catcher behind Reese McGuire

The knocks on Kaminsky are his size, the poor level of competition/short season in New Jersey and the fact that he may be on the expensive size because he's committed to UNC on paper. The knock on Denney is that he's looked pretty bad at catcher this spring and he may not be able to stick at the position. That's why he's fallen from a potential top 10 to a late first round projected pick. Not sure which Crawford you're talking about, there's a couple.

Jonathan Crawford would be a potential Yankees pick, JP, not so much. He's the best shortstop in the draft and he's been moving up in recent mocks, closer to the top 10.

Yeah, there is one mock with JP falling to them, so I think that one is behind the times. Back in March, JP was a late 1st rounder, but all the recent ones I've seen have him top ten as you said

Keith Law just updated his mock. He has Moran going #1 and the Red Sox selecting Austin Meadows. Although, he suggests that Appel could fall to the Red Sox due to signability issues. Obviously one of the less conventional mocks, but this kind of stuff can and does happen on draft day. If the Sox could get a high upside arm like Appel or Stewart, it would be a major coup.

If you got Meadows it'd be a major coup. Appel seems to be a lot of hype for a guy who most people think isn't an ace. The thought on him is that he'd spend minimal time in the minors and is a very safe bet to be a middle of the rotation starter at the big league level.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Meadows, there have been questions about his defense lately. It would be worth spending less on the rest of the draft to get Appel, he's the best pitcher in the draft. Most draft picks don't even make the majors, let alone reach their potential so a player that makes the major leagues and is league average is a success. Appel's a 22 year old pitcher with three potential plus pitches, he has plenty of potential to become a top of the rotation guy. Don't think he'll fall to the Red Sox, but if he does they'd have to take him.

In order to sign him, they'll probably have to forfeit their first rounder next yr

You're bogus.

If you go 5-10% over your draft allotment, you lose your first rounder for the following yr. The Red Sox allotment for their entire draft is $6.83 million. Last yr, the Astros didn't pick Appel because he wanted the entire first round allotment of near $7 million. The sox first round pick is worth $3.24 million. If you assume all teams will go to the 5% wall, then that leaves that pick at $3.4 million. If Appel wanted $6 mil and believes he can get it, then the sox might be drafting him for no reason since he'll either kill their entire pool or he'll go to Indy ball and take his chances next yr. Regardless, I think the point is moot. He doesn't fall past the Cubs IMO

He's a senior college pitcher, he doesn't have infinite leverage here

Boras will advise his players to go to Indy ball if they don't get their money. I doubt it happens, though. I think the Cubbies nab him

Yes, I'm sure he'll sit out a year. Thank you for blessing this thread with your wisdom.

JD Drew, Matt Harrington, Aaron Crow, etc are all examples of players going to Indy ball. It's rare, but it does happen

That would have been a valid point under the former rules. It's completely different now with the spending limits. The players you mentioned sat out because they were more than $5 million apart on the signing bonuses. No one is playing in the minors over $2-3 million unless they're a real diva.

Yeah, that's true. The thing is, the money drops off significantly in the first 10 picks, so if he slides, he might test it out. It's strange that the first to the 7th pick has a $4 mil drop in price

Also, if the sox got Appel, they'd torch the rest of their draft in order to not lose a draft pick next yr. He's gonna want big money

I think you would have to consider doing that. It would be pretty rare for the Red Sox to get the opportunity to draft someone like Appel.

Keith Law is a moron. His most recent mock draft has the Sox taking Stanek at 7th, Frazier getting picked at 13th and Stewart getting picked at 16th. Talk about being desperate for readership.

Must be finals week at OU.

Yeah, when I was in college a bunch of my teammates would take Addy and study all night for finals because they never went to class. Seemed like more trouble than it was worth.
