Shin Soo Choo is a big loss for them. They arent close to competing right now as their pitching staff is in shambles. They need Ubaldo to return to his 2010 form, Masterson to return to his 2011 form and Bauer to fulfill his potential. I find the Guardians to be as perplexing as any team this offseason. They took 2 steps forward, a step back and a few steps sideways. I dont see the logic in loading up on expensive contracts for guys on the wrong side of 30 when their team is a few yrs away from contributing. They're going to go from doormat to .500

They aren't bad contracts for those two players. They can continue to rebuild with two more building blocks under team control.

It be insane to give a 30-31 year old SP 200M imo. I don't care how good he is. It's just begging for trouble. I wouldn't want the Red Sox to pay him that.

Why is Mike Trout's agent upset? He knows the rules. For the first three years the team gets to pay what it wants - why are they gonna do more than pay the lowest that they can? It's a business. Mike's best bet is keep hitting and fielding like this and he's gonna get his $$$ sure enough.

So, apparently the Rangers have decided to look at Kyle Lohse again. And yet, Boras refuses to budge from a 3/45 contract. Hilarious.

Boras is kind of looking a bit silly this offseason. He got Bourn screwed with a contract less than Swisher's while bragging about being able to get him a lot more. Lohse still doesn't even have a team. It's nice to see teams maybe stepping up a little and not paying more than they value a guy at.

More reports that Boras still looking for 14-15 annually. Seriously bro, lay off the crack pipe and get Lohse a job before midseason.

Last I saw he was trying to get a Dempster type deal for Lohse.

Guardians Release Daisuke Matsuzaka

By Charlie Wilmoth [March 24 at 7:25pm CST]

The Guardians report (on Twitter) that they have released pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka. Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer notes (on Twitter) that the Guardians will likely try to strike a new deal to keep Matsuzaka in the fold.

The Guardians' rotation is expected to contain Justin Masterson, Ubaldo Jimenez, Brett Myers, and Zach McAllister along with either Scott Kazmir or Carlos Carrasco. A calf injury caused Matsuzaka to fall behind in the team's rotation battle. The Guardians informed Matsuzaka last week that he would not make the team, but he has said he intends to remain in the organization anyway.

Matsuzaka is an Article XX(B ) free agent, so if the Guardians had not released him, they would have had to pay a $100K retention bonus if he had accepted their minor-league assignment.

Matsuzaka posted an 8.28 ERA in 45 2/3 innings with the Red Sox in 2012, with 8.1 K/9 and 3.9 BB/9. He signed a minor-league deal with the Guardians in February.

The Japanese National Treasure has turned out to be fools gold and his gyroball was merely a myth.

In the end, Lohse got his money. He didn't get $15 mil per season, but $11 mil per yr for 3 yrs from a guy who's been off and on through his career is good for the player. I honestly think Lohse ends up on the scrap heap by 2015

The painful part about Santana is that he re-tore his shoulder now. After dominating the first half of 2012 and looking like the shoulder issues were behind him, he gave up 33 runs in a matter of 5 starts in July/Aug. I wonder what the timeline of his injuries really was, and whether this could have been prevented with better handling of him.

I watched his no-hit game last season. I believe that he set a personal record for number of pitches in that game. I had the feeling as his pitch count mounted that it would cost him down the road, but I didn't think it would be this bad.

Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers have reached agreement on a new contract that could exceed $202 million, sources told ESPN's Buster Olney.

Verlander's deal, which would make him the highest-paid pitcher in the game, is for seven years and worth $180 million. A vesting option for an eighth year could push the deal to $202 million.

You have to hope a small market team has an ace. That's the only way we got CC

Kind of, but not exactly. The Yanks got CC because the Brewers like the idea of having an ace, but they don't like the idea of paying for one. Its insane that they've both traded for, and let go of Greinke, Sabathia, as well as Marcum in recent years.

Teams pay their aces to keep them. We are dreaming if we think that we will be able to poach an ace.

I'm very surprised by some of the contracts we've seen. Cain, Hamels, Felix, Verlander, Greinke, Wainright all seeing monster contracts. Slim pickings available in the years ahead, but who knows, maybe someone like a Brett Anderson, Ian Kennedy or Yovani Gallardo could become available and dominant.

The Mariners drew more than 1 million fans less than the Brewers and they signed King Felix long term. The mariners drew less than the the Pirates which were 15th in NL attendance. The tendency lately has been for teams to resign their aces-- even the small and medium market teams.
