He'd have to accept a 1 yr deal. Boras really overestimated his market. I think the Yankees want him gone since he'll offer them a pick and with Joba, KRob, and Mo healthy he doesn't really have a spot

Swisher signs with the Guardians, good for him. He was not only one of Brian Cashman's best moves ever, he was a great addition to the club. Always enjoyed Nick from November to September every year!

I always liked Swisher as well. We couldnt afford him and needed to improve defensively and from a consistency basis in RF. Swish was the kind of guy who'd disappear for long stretches, then have one 3 week hot streak where he'd carry the club. We'll miss him during that streak, we can replace him for the rest of the yr. And with the OFers coming down the pipe, it was important not to clog up a position with an aging slugger with poor defensive skills. We will miss him in 2013, no doubt, but I doubt we miss him too much past that

Swisher may be the biggest post season choker in history.

At least in Yankees history. He's been involved in 4 postseasons and 8 postseason series and he has hit something like .120. Thats no longer a small sample size

Jacko, after a quick look at the Yankee roster, I think they still have some off season work to do. I can't believe that they will go into the season with Cervelli (a bum) and Romine (a rookie) to hold down the catching. Also, it seems that they need a RH bat in the OF to go along with Ichiro, Grandy and Gardner. Unless Jeter will be 100% on opening day, a backup SS would probably be a good idea. What are you hearing about any moves to fill these hoels?

The reports have been pretty positive on Jeter. But they do have his heir apparent in Nunez. Nunez would be a starter on a lot of big league clubs right now, and the Yankees would need to get him regular playing time so he doesnt actually have the troubles in the field he's shown when getting scarce PT. I have a feeling we see a lot of Nunez between 3B and SS in the first half of the season regardless.

At catcher, I thought Pierzynski on a 1 yr deal made sense, but I guess the Yankees saw how dramatically their staff improved under a defensive minded catcher that they're gonna stay in house. Stewart is going to be the backup, as he proved very capable in that spot this past yr. The starting C job will be between Cervelli and Romine. And if Romine is healthy in camp (which he was in the AFL), then it shouldnt be a competition. Romine is a very solid defensive catcher and will at least temper the blow of losing Martin. Offensively, he reminded me of the Martin who was in LA, with the good average, the stolen bases and the defense. The kid would have been the backup this past season if not for his back injury. Kinda tough to just throw him out there to the wolves, but he is their best option outside of a trade

In the OF, I have a feeling we get Scott Hairston, who just bludgeons left handed pitching. If we don't, we have 2 OF prospects who would better serve the team defensively in Zoilo Almonte and Melky Mesa. If I had to say who'd win that comp right now, it'd be Mesa. He's absolutely abysmal against right handed pitching, but dominates lefties, can play all 3 OF positions well and has a cannon. He'd be a good option for 4th OFer.

It's still early... Moves could be made, but I think we stick with Romine at catcher. Martin had some good power numbers and framed pitches well, but he wasn't a uber hitter. I'd feel fine if Romine was given a shot.

Romine missed most of last season due to.a back injury and he couldn't hit when he came back. In the AFL he was nothing special. I'm sure he's ready defensively and he's the backup catcher of the future (for the yankees). I'd say Cervelli has the job secured for the first months of the Season unless Romine has a monster ST.

Cervelli is trash.

Matt Diaz on a milb deal. It's a smart move and the guy mashes lefties, but he better not be the big offseason acquisition

Ya that's a nice add. His slash line against LHP is ridiculous.

I think Cash is doing the best he can to keep the house of cards from falling. He's built a short term pitching staff with the hopes that Banuelos and Pineda will be big contributors come 2014. He's built a lineup of guys who have proven success in big spots but are old and injury prone. He has a bullpen that all have live arms and are pressure tested. But if the old guys all start playing their age at the same time, they're dead.

Surprised to see the M's part with DJ Mitchell. I have said all along that he's the kind of guy who'd thrive in a Mendoza type role with his stuff. But the M's must have looked at his work as a starter and came away unimpressed. Here's to hoping the Yankees jump on this one

Three team trade idea...

Yankees get Justin Upton and Brendan Ryan.

M's get Curtis Granderson

DBacks get Ivan Nova(Whom Towers loves), Nick Franklin, Eddie Nunez, and Charlie Furbush.

Posted
I don't see that working for the DBacks. Towers may love Nova, but they'd have to get one player with all star level talent, and though the package will probably net him 4 players who play a significant role on the big club, he won't get market value for a young, MVP caliber player who is under contract for 3-4 more yrs.

If the Yankees were to get Upton, we'd have to move Cano. Both he and Granderson are on one yr deals and Grandy won't generate as much buzz as Cano would on a 1 yr deal. That being said, I'm happy with Robby as is and the pick plus the money in the draft would be worth more than Granderson would be in a trade.

I have a legitimate feeling that 2013 is the final yr of the Yankee dynasty with a major team disintegration coming afterwards. I have a feeling we'll punt 2014 while developing some talent from within at the big league level and then either dealing a lot of it away or going hard on the FA market after 2014.

Are you saying Granderson wouldn't get an offer next year?

I think the Yankees are in a similar situation as the Sox were in last season. Decent roster and if things go right could be right in it. If a few key pieces go south or as Jacko said everyone ages at once it will be a grease fire. The Red Sox already blew it up. I'm expecting the Yankees to do the same next off season.

Cano is a Dodger in waiting imo. It makes too much sense, LAD will pay him, and he will probably see it as his lifes honor to play 2B for the Dodgers as Jackie Robinson did. If I had to bet on any off season move for next season now, this is my bread winner :)

I don't expect them to extend Jeter. I think they are finally going to put there foot down and say you can come back on your player option, but we aren't renegotiating and we are moving you from SS. I think he will be asked to move to 2B when Cano leaves.

They probably try and move Arod and if they don't get a bite he becomes "Papi" in that he is pretty much a DH only(he probably be a good back up 1B if Tex any DL stints).

Pettitte and Mo probably retire. Hughes, I think if he pitches good this season he might get a better deal on the market. Kuroda will be gone.

Yankees are in for big roster overhaul. For Yankees fans I'm sure it will be tough to watch and era close, but on the other side should be really fun to watch a new era get built.

Where did you get that from? Seriously.

"Robby as is and the pick plus the money in the draft would be worth more than Granderson would be in a trade. " I kind of took that as weighing Cano and the pick vs just letting grandy go. I'm all for trading Cano though, and Granderson for that matter.

I kind of like the idea of Cano in the National League. I can't see the $panks letting him walk though. Other then in the playoffs last year he has been the Spankees most consistent hitter the past few seasons. If that huge ARod contract becomes the reason for Cano moving on then I love the contract ARod has that will allow to start collecting Social Security when it finally runs out. Talk about a problem!

I would be all for an actual rebuild with a major deal involving Robby before the season, but NYY fans will never tolerate it.

Robby will be the last home grown star left after Jeter, Rivera, and Pettitte gone. I can't see him going anywhere.

I dont think it would happen, but imagine the haul for a 2b with the second highest WAR in baseball, who could slot in as your 3 hitter and is 30. His value is immense and I think Boras is going to force us to pay it. I am very conflicted on the future of the Yankees, Divinity. I think our 2013 campaign should land us in the playoffs because, for once, we should have one of the top 3 rotations in all of baseball. The reason why I say that is we have a bona fide ace in CC who is healthy. You have a guy in Kuroda who was dominant, durable and had great stuff last yr. You have a full yr of Pettitte, who looked like he took a yr off to juice (fastball velo 89-91, havent seen that in a few yrs). You have a healthy Hughes in a contract yr. And you have Nova and Phelps fighting for that final spot. That's a deep rotation. Our offense puttered along last yr with ARod playing like s***, Grandy hitting in the .230s, and Gardner missing the whole yr. I think with Ichiro and Gardner there for a full season, our offense should weather the loss of Swisher and we should be pleasantly surprised by the introduction of Romine, especially since Martin was a near lost cause offensively.

That being said, we're f***ed come 2014. The roster turnover will be tremendous. These are the guys we are losing....

Cano, Granderson, Hughes, Chamberlain, Pettitte, Logan, Kuroda, Jeter(maybe), Rivera and Youkilis. Seeing as we are losing such a big piece of our team and we're probably going to re-sign Cano for an AAV of around $25 mil or so, we're going to be in salary cap hell. Between CC, ARod, Tex, and Cano, we'd have $100 mil tied up long term. We'd have a cap of $189 million with another:

$6.5 mil tied up in Ichiro

$5 mil or so for Gardner in arb

$5 mil for Robertson in arb

$1 mil for Nunez

$2 mil for Nova

That's another near $20 mil off the board. That means we'd have around $70 mil to fill 2 spots in the rotation (assuming Nova and Phelps move in full time), the closers role vs the entire middle relief if Robertson closes, SS, and LF. We will likely see our relief corps get temperized with one signing and a bunch of kids coming up. We'll probably see 2 pillow contracts in the rotation. We'd probably be forced into re-signing Jeter at a rate we arent comfortable with. We might be able to promote from within in the OF. And we should fill out our bench with some low risk, high reward vets on the downturn of their careers as usual. When all is said and done, we'll have to absorb some significant losses by either turning to downgrades or rookies. In the end, 2014 will not be a banner yr and I think we all know it. Now, 2015 will see the shackles of the cap come off, we'd have had 2 yrs more experience for our top prospects and we'll be closer to the end of the ARod deal, but we have to be realistic.

Robby Cano is under contract in 2013. Do we want to commit 7 yrs and $175 mil to him from 2014 on knowing that we won't be a playoff contender until at least yr 2 in the contract when he'll be 32 yrs old? These guys make their money on the long term deals in yrs 1-3 or 4. You burn one or two of those yrs on bridge yrs and by the time you're ready to contend, the big money player is a glorified DH.

Posted
Matt Diaz and Juan Rivera enter the fray for our RH counterpart in the corners. Rivera is washed up and cannot play the OF anymore. Diaz is coming off a hand injury. I really, really hope they know what they're doing, cause if these guys cannot hit lefties this yr, we're gonna be incredibly vulnerable to the lefties in division

Hearing #Yankees might be close to deal with Travis Hafner

Nice, assuming it's a low based salary. Something around 2 or 2.5 million.
