Absolutely. Too bad more people can't figure this out. Epstein stepped in s***. He will never see success again and it will be compounded because he will never have a giant payroll to play with.

Unless a GM is there for like 8-10 years, any championship team will be the result of a combination of efforts. Some of the 2004 and 2007 teams was built by Duquette, and other parts of it were assembled by Theo. Obviously a bit more of 2004 should be credited to Duquette, as more guys he brought into the organization were there on that team than in 2007, but still...both guys had a hand in each title.

Why people make it out to be an either/or is beyond me.

By the same token, most of this year's Orioles team was inherited by Duquette. He's made good moves obviously, but his situation is similar to what Epstein's was coming into 2003.

I never said that Duquette deserved all the credit for 04-7 just that he created the foundation which made it possible. The Baltimore situation that Duquette walked into is quite different from the Boston situation that Epstein inherited. For example, Baltimore hasn't had a winning record since 1997.

True, but Duquette didn't make huge changes to the roster either. And Showalter will probably be Manager of the Year.

He put together most of the pitching staff-- not too bad in a one-year period. His situation is not similar to Epstein's in 2003. He doesn't have anywhere near the talent that Theo inherited.

The Duke not only built the pitching staff, he had to rebuild the scouting dept.

I do think we can become at least respectable again in pretty short order...really competing for championships again will likely take longer especially now that getting all the way via the WC has become more difficult.

It will at least be interesting to see how the old powerhouse teams of the AL East change and adapt...how quickly....by what means...will they be able to break the habit of buying up aging FA's.

As much as I hate to say it, I think the Spanks will change and adapt relatively quickly. They want to get back their share of the league revenues rebate. So they have incentive there and I think they realize that aging stars have become a problem for them as well.

I hope we will change quickly but I am less confident mainly because I have grown less confident that our guys at the top can stop exhausting so much energy pursuing short term revenue enhancement.

Off season might be more fun than it has been in the recent past with changes afoot I think for both the Spanks and the Sox.

This is the first season in a long time that it has been really hard to watch the Sox. I have seen down years before, but this was different. Its hard watching a team that finds so many different ways to lose, and then add on top of that all of the crap that has gone on with this team outside the games and I think that is why its been hard to watch. With that said it would be nice if they found a way to beat the $panks tonight.
