I have seen critical game after critical game go out the window. I actually think that they are really down to their last shot to pull themselves up and end up with at least some swagger to take into this stupid WC play in game.

It is very likely the very last gasp of even a wisp of a chance to sniff the devision as well. If they end up with a split series here, meaning they will have really not gained anything for another series, then I think realistically they are out of time entirely for the division.

In truth, that is exactly what I thought on the west coast swing. That mess followed by the Yankee series by rights probably did seal their fate for a realistic shot at the division. Maybe they still do have this tiny little window of opportunity left but if these four games with the WS end up just being a waste of time needed to catch up (meaning a split) then realistically they just won't have enough time left. As much as we need to go nuts and run off more like a stretch like 20-5 for the next 25, the Yanks need to fold and they just don't look like that.

So far I just hate everything about this season. The Yanks have approached this entire season like the professionals that they are and that is likely the quality that they have lived off this season. The comparison between the two teams is depressing.

Red Sox....more whiny ********...me...me...me baseball. Yanks...find their competition's weak spot and stick a dagger right in it. I could not be more depressed if I tried.

When the pitching stinks, it is hard to get on a consistent run.

Way too much pessimism. If you "hate everything about this season" you should stop watching the games. Don't spend 3+ hrs most days doing something you hate.

Stat of the Day: Adrian Gonzalez leads the majors with a .404 average (38 for 94) with runners in scoring position.

Notes: The Red Sox are 19-10 (.655) when facing a lefthanded starter this season, and their offense is second in the majors with 43 homers against lefties ... Cody Ross hit a pair of three-run homers Wednesday, the 10th multi-homer game of his career and third this season. He became the first Red Sox player since Bill Mueller in 2003 to hit home runs with at least two men on base in back-to-back innings -- his came in the third and fourth innings Wednesday -- and he was the first Boston player to do that at Fenway Park since Mo Vaughn in 1997... More Ross: his six RBIs were the most for a Sox batter this season and one shy of his career high ... Gonzalez, who matched season highs with three hits and four RBIs Wednesday, has hit safely in 22 of his last 23 games. He left the one game in which he did not record a hit early because he was feeling ill.

Song of the day: "1000 Julys" by Third Eye Blind.

It's not that simple. I remember a comic strip from years back of a golfer duffing on shot after another. In the first frame, he says "I hate this game." In the second frame, he exclaims the same thing. In the third frame, he asks, "why do I bother playing this game." In the final frame he answers his own question: "Because it's the only fun I have."

That's why he watches the Red Sox.

CIRIACO AT DH AND AVILES AT SS!?!?

That right there is just utterly wrong.

Bobby V makes line ups like a complete moron. The other night he had Nava DHing and sore armed Crawford in LF. Tonight, he has the superior SS at DH. The other option was to have Pedroia DH to protect him from diving for balls and re-injuring himself. He's injured the thumb twice diving for balls. The guy is in dementia.

Let me introduce you to Bobby Valentine...

Buchholz induces the groundball so I get the inkling Aviles will have an error or two but Red Sox will win it no matter.

Oh come on.....V can't be serious. I was thinking Pedey to DH cause it would get his bat back in the lineup and maybe allow just a little more healing for the thumb if needed. Seems to me he has mashed his thumb in the field more often than at the plate. But if V is adamant about having Pedey play 2nd why in Gods name would you put Aviles at SS and Ceriaco at DH?

This team is so unbelievably willing and able to make things more difficult than they need to be....across the board! Why does this make a single bit of sense?

I think Aviles D has been pretty good lately.

I mean even though it makes sense in the short term, Mike Aviles is the teams SS this season... Why take him out of position for a few games, if your not going to do it for the rest of the season?

Why would I put Ceriaco at SS? Because he is available and because the Sox margin for error is zero at this point. Can't afford any more V hunches or booted balls hit right at SS or missed DP's and extra outs cause Aviles take so much time to make the most rudimentary SS plays.

I guess that Bobby V doesn't want to rock the boat with the veterans. He should be trying to put his best team out there and to hell with the egos.

I am all done with the egos. They are two games above 500. That is what they are. Egos my ass. Is it any wonder that they cannot even get close enough to the Yanks to sniff their exhaust pipes?

By that logic I should never listen to my girlfriend when she talks. :)

It's the pecking order. Aviles has been decreed the SS. Ciriaco is an outsider. That's the way they operate.

BV sets the lineup. Wasn't he supposed to end that mentality?

When I was at the Sox/A's game, there was an absolutely hammered guy hanging over the LF wall (not the monster, the wall in foul territory) almost directly next to Coco Crisp, and he just constantly was screaming "COCOOOO!!!! COCOOOOO!!!!"

It was hilarious. But I wish he was here now to get Coco's attention to make the new GT!
