According to a team source, the Red Sox will designate utility man Brent Lillibridge for assignment in order to activate Carl Crawford from the 60-day disabled list.

The timing of the move has some irony to it, as Lillibridge was one of two players (the other being Zach Stewart) sent to the Red Sox from the White Sox in the Kevin Youkilis trade. Monday marks Youkilis' first trip to Boston since the trade.

In 10 games played for Boston, the 28-year-old Lillibridge went 2-for-16 with no runs batted in and five strikeouts.

Well, I am glad we got our money's worth from trading Youk.

Don't get me wrong, I am not a FO hater by any means. This is just one particular decision I happen to disagree with. Maybe Youk had to go, maybe not. Middlebrooks was the future. I still think he is. If Youk had to go, they should have waited for a better offer. They needed an extra infielder, they could have used him and he most likely would have performed better as the days went on, upping his value. Instead, they got basically nothing.

And if you are going to give him away, give him to an NL team. We get to face him tonight, and he'll be taking aim at the monster. If he bangs a few balls of the wall, my head will explode.

Yep. We face Youkilis tonight. And I am completely unimpressed at this.

He is neither the best hitter on his new team, nor was he the best hitter here. There is literally no reason to be horrified to be facing Kevin Youkilis, any more than it would to be facing any other similarly talented hitter.

They'd better not boo him. He deserves the same standing ovation Nomar' date=' Dave Roberts, and Pedro got their first games back.[/quote']

Who had less of a Redsox imprint...

Craig Grebeck....or Lillibridge?

I guess you must be too young to remember the wrecking ball that Carlton Fisk took to the BoSox after he went to the ChiSox for 10-12 years well into his 40's. It didn't matter if he was hitting .230, he wrecked us consistently.

The main difference is that Fisk was a HOF.

Youkilis is not.

Grebeck. I remember him. He was the worst offensive player that I have seen in a Red Sox uni. At least, he was a good glove man at SS.

The similarity is that Fisk like Youik had a hard on for Boston after he left town. Fisk was killing us long after he was playing at All Star caliber.

One small consolation - when Fisk played for the WS it was a balanced schedule and the RS played the WS 12-13 times a season. Now they play each other 6-8 times a season.

As I pointed out in the game thread, Youks hit like crap for 3 weeks in Boston before he was dealt for a bag of beans. Then he suddenly found his stroke in Chicago. I don't know what went on between him and V, but he owed the fans and his profession more than that. Predictably, the media has overlooked this, focussing on the Y-V soap opera.

You really think he was dogging it? I can't imagine what would motivate him to do that. He might have been a little messed up in the head, but that's different.

Yes, thank goodness.

There is, by the way, no basis for comparing Youks to Fisk. Fisk was driven out of Boston along with Fred Lynn by the Red Sox GM, Haywood Sullivan, at the beginning of free agency in the late 70s. He simply allowed their contract offers to be sent out too late. Sullivan hated free agency. In contrast, Steinbrenner was signing every free agent in sight at the time--pushing up the prices. Gene Autrey of the Angels was also throwing money around. I'm surprised George didn't go after Lynn or Fisk. Autrey got Lynn, and Fisk went to the White Sox. That was a black day for the Red Sox--almost akin to the selling of Babe Ruth.

Let's just say he was highly unmotivated. Maybe a sign of what went wrong with the Red Sox.

The only comparison is that a former Red Sox star will be returning to Fenway highly motivated to beat the piss out of us.

He had selfish reasons to be motivated if nothing else.

I was surprised that V felt compelled to throw a little gas on the fire. Why did V have to say anything at all. Why do we need V's opinion about it since it was bound a view that deflected any responsibility away from V and to Youk. Maybe that is the truth of the matter but who cares at this point. Youk is gone and thats that.

I don't need to hear V rationalize that Youk just could not let it go. Lets make sure Youk is really pumped to come back and kick our asses.
