I have been saying this in other threads and thought this deserved its own one.

Doubront last few starts seems to be very painful to watch, he was serving up batting practise against Bluejays, and even though i didnt see his start against Mariners, Albers getting out in the 5th meant it was a shoddy start from him.

Is it time to give him some breathers now that we have Cook/Morales tandem working better and put him in the bullpen? or does BV wait too long and have him gassed out completely which would be wrong.

his Fast balls against Bluejays were hardly hitting 88mph.. which is a huge concern if your location is not there. or maybe it was a few starts and he might still have something left in the tank.

how many more starts before BV puts him to the bullpen, he is not helping the team with going only 4+ innings every start.

It's time to get serious (if the Sox intend to make a serious run) and get a top pitcher in here. Doubs, Cook, Morales and Dice K could fight it out for any remaining starts not made by Beckett, Lester, Buch or the new guy.

i am not giving up on Cook/Morales yet. Cook is only 33, and with every sinker ball pitcher, he might have bad days but on a given day he could be lights out. and i am hoping he has 1 bad start but 4-5 quality starts. if he keeps that ratio i am all for it.

and Morales is consistently throwing 95/96.

they could be the difference maker for our stretch run.

would a Garza/Felix type pitcher help us, hell yes. do we need them desperately right now. i dont think so.

We need an additional pitcher. Our pitching continues to be at the bottom of the league. It's just not good enough.

2 weeks ago with Morales Cook starting and not knowing what was coming from them i would have agreed 100%.

the bad starts are coming from Doubront and DiceK and even Dice had a decent start the last time up.

not saying that another arm will not help us but if Cook Morales gives us an 8-2 record in the next month combined i say we are as good as we can get for the stretch run.

and we dont end up giving up our farm system for someone like Hamels/Garza... i still dream of Felix Hernandez wearing a bosox uniform..

w/o a true ace you really think we can make serious push through the playoffs?

otherwise it's probably 1 series and done.

I don't think Garza is worth the prospects it would take to acquire him. Theo's put it to us enough, I'll take a pass on him. It'll take a couple more starts to be sure, but there's a chance that Morales can be that lights out guy 4 out of 5 times out. I'm really intrigued by this kid, he's still just 26. Maybe he's figured it out and is ready to be the guy Colorado thought they had.

I agree. I would not surrender any good prospect for a SP rental for a year and a half. While we still have an outside shot to catch the Yankees, if we get stuck in the WC morass we will be one and out if we get in at all. Don't need that. I would rather save our chips and get a real ace SP in the offseason and go all in next year.

in the post season we have that guy in Beckett i am not worried about that. we might loose the Lester start, but Buch/Morales are decent 3 and 4 starters. i will take my chances with

Beckett

Lester

Buchholz

Morales

Cook -- but he needs to prove he can perform against the AL contending teams. wonder how he does when he faces the Tex lineup or Yankee lineup.

like i said the 10 starts combined by Cook and Morales will be key for us deciding on if we have a true need for a rental SP or not.

and Beckett and Lester would need to man up and take that charge of the team no pun intended

People probably don't want to come to terms with it but the two loses to the M's were likely the defining moments for the 2012 Sox. All of our worst features really dinged us and cost us two games we really had to win.

We got out-pitches again in pitching duals. We got hurt by putting defensive liabilities in positions where defensive pluses help you and defensive liabilities hurt you because the Sox insist on valuing hitting over defense even to the point of putting defensive liability players in defensive plus positions cause they can hit.....sometimes. Our situational hitting sucked with the exception of a few occasions in the two games we won.

jung,

with Punto in the lineup i dont think we can expect more but that park sucks as well.

4 game sweep would have been an icing on the cake, but often times like these our beloved team comes a tiny bit short making blunders in defense. and these games as much as they count we cant have these blunders in the PS. better now than in the PS.

looking forward to the ALE matchups as the more ground we gain against Os and TB and Yankees when we play them..... the better of we will be.

Doubront has been serviceable this yr with solid peripherals. He has the look of a kid with solid potential. But he has hit the rookie wall, something all kids eventually hit in the bigs. The question will be, can he fight through it, or does he turn into a reliever for the rest of this yr, then move back into the rotation from here.

Pretty hard to judge based on a series in Seattle. They have good pitching and the ballpark is a graveyard for offense. In Seattle's home games this year the average runs per game is 6.1. In their road games it's 10.0.

The Sox put themselves in the position of needing to win games in a park they were not designed to play in. If you look at what we should have done in May and June vs what we did and what we face coming up, you can look forward to these games if you want to, but I would have preferred to look forward to them with some wins in the bank from the light part of our schedule this year. We put nothing in the bank and then the Yanks and Angels went nuts in June. The O's did not fall apart as much as we want to think so (going 13-13 to your 15-12) and now we really have no rope left. As my post in the game thread from last night points out the Yanks and Rays have the easiest schedules of all the competing teams here in July. I estimate that the Angels have the toughest with the Sox second toughest to the Angels.

I believe we will have to generate a better winning percentage here in July than we have at any time this year and will have to do it with a tougher schedule. So hold on to your seats folks. Its going to be bumpy ride with no time left for putzing around.
