Royals up 5-4' date=' bottom 8 by the way. 3 outs and this team is tied with Tampa.[/quote']

After all the hate/misgivings/dejection/cursing/kicking babies/crying/sarcasm/disappointment/etc/etc/etc .............. we have a shot, and a very good one, to take over 1st place by the ASB......I can see the board getting alot more friendly traffic pretty soon ( fair weather fans )

My favorite stat :D

Also, Billy Butler just put the Royals back on top. 5-4, bottom 8.

If broxton can hold on. We're tied with Tampa. Not bad for a team that a large chunk of this forum seems hell bent on dismissing.

SFF, BTR, i agree that ERA is not the only factor, but yet the guy who we need when the game is on the line, in a close game this year Lester has coughed up the lead almost everytime, unless its not a blowout like todays game. he might have had 1 good game against KC but thts the only one i remember, the rest have been mediocre starts. and there is no one else to blame but him.

he is too angry on everything else when that 1 pitch doesnt go his way, and if he continues this attitude i have serious doubts about his ability to perform in close games.

i hope he proves me wrong big time!!

of course' date=' youk starting to hit in chicago........ good to see, loved that guy[/quote']

As long he doesn't do it against us, I'm happy for him. He looks damn weird in that chicago uni though.

Great day! A big Red Sox win on my anniversary that is over well in advance of dinner time' date=' so I will not miss a thing by going to our celebratory dinner. Also, got the news that Yankees Sabathia and Pettitte are both on the DL. What a day![/quote']

Rays are 6-9 in their last 15. They now go home to face Detroit for 4 games, who is 10-5 in their last 15. Following that series, the Rays will host the Yankees for 3.

Red Sox, meanwhile, go to Seattle for a 4 game set and then to Oakland for a 3 game set.

It's time to turn on the jets.

Another good win for Sox finally puts them enough above 500 to not have to stare 500 in the face every game out. Mariners should not pose any huge problems for the Sox. Should be a 2/4 series at least and maybe 3/4 then Athletics and then hit the Yanks just as they lose two out of the rotation.

Should be interesting to see how the Yanks do in a four game series with these two guys down in their rotation. I don't expect the Yanks to fall apart but more interested to see how the two teams play each other even with Pettite and Sabathia out.

Wonder when Buch actually pitches again.

I fully expect the Sox to go 6-1, or, at the very worst, 5-2 on this road trip. Morales vs Felix, right now, I take Morales. He's been lights out and Felix has been very beatable. Trust me. He's on my fantasy team.

Sweep the Mariners, take 2/3 from the A's and go into the Yankees series rolling. And just for good measure, get Ellsbury and Crawford back at or during the Yankees series.

Don't get too excited about Bard just yet...

Bard in his more familiar role? his job from now on is to go out there, throw heat, dont hold anything back........i think he'll be fine

Got a standing room ticket for $9 and ended up sitting in the loge box for all 9 innings. Not bad. Great game. Offense was good, with some obvious help from Romero and the Jays fielding. Lester was solid. After the first inning, the only runs he allowed were the 2 HRs. Not a great outing, but good enough. McDonald's catch was amazing.

38 K's, 5 BB's, 3 HR in his last 6 starts. 4.24 ERA.

That doesn't add up.

Plain and simple, he's throwing much, much better than his ERA would suggest.

It took me a while too, but ERA is not a good indicator of how a pitcher has thrown. Far too many outside factors.

The things that Lester CAN control, K's, Walks, and HR's, he's limiting. He can't control it when bleeders get through or broken bat flares turn into RBI's.

He can also control hard hit balls by not tossing the 'ol baseball right down Main Street. I still like ERA and for now I see no reason to change. I also understand that other intelligent baseball fans prefer to use other stats to assess a pitcher's performance.

Yes. And he has only allowed 3 HR over his last 6 starts. Pitchers get in trouble when they give up walks and then give up hard hit balls.

Hard hit balls, by themselves, can't hurt you. That's why walks and K's are so important.

Balls that are hard hit (ie on a line) tend to find the ground or a wall before a glove. Lester tends to groove balls that may not go over the wall but are hit hard enough to become base hits, thus increasing his ERA. Good pitchers either strike out a hell of a lot of guys or do not allow solid contact or both.

ERA rules.

No matter how much you want it to be, ERA is not a very useful metric. It just isn't. There's no debate or opinion there. Other stats have come along to displace it as the primary indicator of a pitcher's success. It provides a glimpse at what might lie underneath it. You don't look at someone's ERA and automatically say, "his ERA is better, he's the better pitcher." not if you have a brain anyways.

First off, go look up BABIP.

Second off, Lester hasn't been giving up consistent hard contact to support what you're saying. There have been heaps and heaps of broken bat hits as well as bleeders, flares, etc that have landed.

A normal BABIP is anywhere from .290-.310. A low BABIP is .280, a high BABIP is .320.

Coming into this game, Lester's was at .392 over his past 5 starts, but he was somehow giving up 3-4 runs per start.

He's been extremely unlucky.

And like I was saying alll along. In order to score runs when a pitcher isn't walking guys, you have to STRING HITS TOGETHER. Without giving up free passes, and when you are striking out around 1 hitter per inning, teams have a very low liklihood of scoring runs. The fact that Lester is allowing as many runs as he is is purely a result of s*** luck.
