I would like to sincerley thank the poster that has me on ignore for not posting that the game was over before the 8th or 9th. Made the game thread much more pleasant. I don't mind negativity. But in prior threads, saying the game is over when we are down 1-0 in early innings is just ridiculous and juvenile. We're all frustrated. No need to make it worse by piling on.

Thank you.

Someone quote this please. Good night all and let's get 'em tomorrow.

Who has you on ignore?

At this point, why the hell is Youkilis playing???

The guy is absolutely not helping this team win. He's hitting freaking .224 with a .665 OPS, and we're sitting Middlebrooks, who is hitting .305 with a .868 OPS.

f***ing ridiculous. Absolutely inexcusable.

Now that I can agree with. Showcasing him tonight really helped his trade value.

I did not understand that.

AGons could and should easily have made second base on that past ball. Instead he is standing around with his thumb stuck up his ass...Mr disinterested. He would have been in scoring position. Granted the Sox did nothing with the opportunity but that is no excuse for Agons to be daydreaming over on 1st base.

This has been a very depressing season so far. It really feels like a continuation of last September in many ways.

I paid for that :(:(

I've paid for it for every season since 2003, I have no regrets, never will. Will continue to purchase it. It's my money, I earned it.

Didn't really matter. He wasn't the tying run.

You do realize that no one argues that Pythag records should trump real life results, right? Pythagorean records have a very high correlation with future success. A team that finishes at a record significantly below their Pythagorean record can, with a healthy amount of confidence, be expected to play closer to that record in the following year if they bring back the same roster.

No one has ever argued that results should be altered to fit what more advanced metrics tell us to expect going forward and no one has argued that more advanced metrics can predict the future with 100% accuracy. There are variables at play that are unpredictable which will create a certain amount of inherent variation in the results.

Dismissing a statistical approach because these stats are currently telling us that the Red Sox are better than their 29-32 record is akin to dismissing science because the weather man predicted sun and warm weather for the week and it rained on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

These metrics are proven to have a strong correlation with future performance.[/quote

Really now do they? That's why the formula has been updated frequently (generally by changing the exponent) to match empirical results. Convenient don't you agree?

It really does. September 2011 all season so far with some glimpses of hope here and there.

To say the least.

It's a shame that Iglesias is on the DL because Aviles can't hit traffic right now, and his defense has been very bad lately. He's not nearly enough of a roadblock to keep Iglesias down in AAA.

You put Iggy and WMB on the left side of the infield and it's a strength, especially defensively.

I mean FFS, Iglesias can come up here and hit .224 with a .665 OPS. GTFO, Youkilis.

OK, now I get it. This season is sort of a long pre-season for next season. We play this season to load the stat sheet and raise the confidence level for next season and then bring back the same roster.......OK, I'm happy again....let go pre-2013 Sox

I know I am being a prick in this case.....and I know what you really mean but to honest I just don't give a s*** about Pythagorean adjustments. I would just as soon reach down and adjust my jock.

The only regret is when we are stuck with Jim Palmer when they play the O's. Don't you agree?:D

Sox got handled tonight and Beckett couldnt deliver, even though he was lights out once the game was out of hand a bit. You give up 4 runs against a mediocre team, you should win. But they faced an ace and he shut them down. It seems like the sox are playing just bad enough to lose. The offense has been shut down for the last 8 games or so. Only 25 runs in that time, good for a 3.1 runs per game. You cannot do that and expect to win

They can blame the umps, but when you see guys trying to pull outside pitches and hitting weak grounders, you know they are in trouble.

100%!!!!!! And the 3 games we get Hawk. Horrible!!

I go to school in Maryland so I'm stuck with them for half of the season. It's awful.

Beyond awful. :thumbdown I thought the Nats announcers would be better, they are, but they aren't. :(

And the road doesnt get easier. You get Buerhle and Nolasco, two quality starters capable of throwing QS after QS up there. And in the Cubbies series, you get Samardzija and Dempster, two of their better pitchers as well. At least you miss Garza. The offense needs to explode, cause you are now through your 2 best pitchers

I don't think it's about the road getting easier as much as the team playing better. Nobody's going to give this team anything.

7 games behind the Rays and Yankees in the loss column and 6 games behind the O's in the loss column. That is starting to get substantial. It's not as early as some think.

101 games left. That's a pretty substantial amount of time.

Eck just said what no one else has said thus far. Our offense is mediocre. It's getting exposed.

The sox offense is boom or bust because they have been relying on guys who go on runs then disappear, ie replacement level players. Plus, the middle of the order sans Ortiz have been absolutely terrible. Things will not resolve spontaneously even when Ellsbury and Crawford come back. They need AdGon and Youk to play like AdGon and Youk

Up until hitting a stretch of really upper echelon pitching, the Sox offense was fine...again 2nd in the league in runs. I have to look to see where they are today. I agree that this team is being ground to a halt by upper echelon pitching but upper echelon pitching does this!

I just do not get what we seem not to understand about baseball on this board.....pitching grinds hitting to dust....we don't have pitching that grinds hitting to dust.....however we are facing teams that do.

Don't need Youk at all when you've got Middlebrooks.

Gonzo, I agree with. But regardless, Cody Ross, Ellsbury, and Crawford will absolutely provide a huge, huge, huge offensive upgrade over McDonald, Nava, Sweeney, and Podsednik. That's a no brainer.

It is, but the Yankees and Rays are winning with pitching and that leads to less slumps and more runs of sustained dominance. You take a look at the teams who are realistically going to be in the playoffs, and the only team without reliable pitching is the Rangers. Holland and Feliz on the DL, Darvish pitching well, Oswalt trying to pitch in the AL, Harrison doing well, etc. The other teams in the running (CWS, ANA, NYY, TB, DET) all have solid pitching. That means falling behind and catching up is going to be a lot harder to do

Right now, Pods and Nava have replaced Crawford and Ellsbury rather well. You have gotten nearly nothing out of RF since Sweeney got concussed, so Ross may be a help. I am not saying they will continue that, but you have actually gotten good production out of them. Your problem is that Pedroia is hurt, Youkilis is awful, AdGon cannot hit, and Aviles has fallen off a rock

The Yankees pitching is on an unsustainable tear right now, kind of like the Sox pitching was on during their 16-6 run. They're not going to keep throwing to a sub-2.30 ERA by any means. If you don't think that the Red Sox are very capable of going on a 13-3 or 15-4 run and the Yankees are capable of going on a 2-9 run, then you're delusional.
