I agree with you in that sense. I was simply making the point that being in last place by 3 games is not a reason to say this season is over.

Right now this team is mediocre. The return of Ellsbury, Crawford, and Bailey could change things if we can stay afloat in the mean time. Who knows.

Its not that we are 3 or 4 games out that is the concern. Its that we have too many holes on this team to change the current situation. If we had great pitching and were just 4 games out, thats something we can expect to eventually shine through. We don't. Our pitching stinks and the guys that are being paid lots of money to produce, aren't.

I don't know why they played double play depth with Chavez up. Chavez is extremely hard to double up, and there were none out. Why let in the run? Between that and letting Byrd bat with runners in scoring position and less than 2 outs, cost us the game. Bobby V is getting a little soft in the head.

Golden turd awards for tonite are awarded to Aviles (0 for 3), Pedroia the Mouth (0 for 4), Ortiz (0 for 3), and Byrd. Dishonorable mention to Youkilis and Gonzales for failing to produce too.

It was the roster he was give.

Exactly. This is the best we have right now. Thats why no one should have irrational exuberance about their chances.

V has too many outfielders right now, and he is shuffling a lot of guys around out there. Sitting a hot hitter like Nava down is pretty ridiculous.

It's not the roster that we're GOING to have the rest of the year.

Everyone has sang the same tune all year. Stay close until the reinforcements get back. That would be Ells and Crawford. Now that Bard is down in AAA getting his s*** together, he'll probably go to the bullpen. That helps the bullpen. Bailey comes back, that helps the bullpen. Ross comes back. That helps this team. Ryan Kalish went yard again tonight. That helps this team.

They don't have to be in 1st place right now. They just need to stay close, which is exactly what they're doing. It sucks that they've lost 3 straight, but fortunately the AL East leading Rays have lost the past 2 nights as well.

So, even though we've lost the past 2 games to the O's, we're in no worse shape than we were coming into this series.

Win tomorrow, stay close.

And if you don't believe me about the whole "stay close" philosophy, take a look at our September/October schedule.

Thats the last 24 games of the season right there. You don't think, if we stay close like we're doing, that we can't pick up games in September with a full bullpen and healthy roster, likely with Pedroia hitting as well as Gonzo?

If you don't think so, then you're just delusional.

Jim Rice comments tonight clearly along the same lines as the comments we have been making here about smarter plate appearances. Does not make much sense to relish a great pitching performance by Josh when it results in another lost game.

They still play like a team that thinks they can just throw their gloves out on the field and it is not going to happen. They need to be smart about everything they do to win games. That includes V who on occasion now seems to be playing hunches or something. I can't explain some of this stuff cause you can't find a single piece of logic for it. So you are left feeling like he is playing a hunch or something??????

Its delusional to look at our current situation (last place for most of the season, pitching ranking 13th in the AL, and highly paid bums laughing all the way to the bank instead of contributing) and thinking that we are a playoff caliber team. There is ZERO evidence for that, ZERO. Its wishful thinking, but wishing it were true does not make it so. I admit that the situation could change, and if it does, I will become more optimistic about our chances, but right now, face it: WE STINK!

We are missing the MVP of position players last year. We are missing our closer. We are missing Crawford, say what you want about him but he's an impact player.

And instead, we're playing a bunch of journeymen.

I'm sorry. But if you think this is our team, you're delusional. It's nothing against you, it's just realistic. You're being pessimistic because we lost.

The season isn't trashed or won in every single game.

Wrong. I am pessimistic because our pitching stinks, mostly. I could live with Gonzalez and Youkilis being bums if we had good pitching. We don't. We rank 13th in the AL in overall ERA. Think thats good enough to make the playoffs, even when Bailey comes back? Think about it. Show me a team whose pitching was next to last in their division in the last 10 years that made the postseason.

Gonzalez sucks and sucks hard. Give him back to Mexico.

He was born in San Diego. You'd have to give him back to them.

They don't want him. Those are the guys who sent him over here.

The Sox have to give themselves better chances to win. A game lost now as just as painful as one lost later. While it may well be easier to win games later based on returning stars that is no excuse for just playing like they have thrown in the towel in these games.

They needed to push across a stinking lousy run tonight to at least get to a tie....got runners on base to do it and then could not push a lousy run across. You have to be patient and willing to sacrifice something of yourself to succeed at times like these.

Byrd should never have been batting in that situation with Pods at 3rd. So as pathetic as Byrd is, that is on V from my perspective. But then Aviles coming up after Byrd and MIke was trying to be a bit greedy in that spot when all we needed was a base hit to tie the game. Maybe if he came to the plate with a different idea in mind, he still would have failed. But he was not swinging for a simple little base hit in that spot and that is really want we needed from him. I have seen him do that time and time again and it is getting as frustrating as seeing Agons come up hackin from the on deck circle.

Youk can be Brady's ball boy.

What a waste of $ on Gonz & CC. PATHETIC.

Pete Abraham ‏@PeteAbe

Josh Beckett refused to speak to reporters. First time I can remember a starting pitcher doing that. And I covered grumpy Randy Johnson

The most interesting thing to me about Abraham's comment is remembering how Lester left the dugout yesterday....clearly pissed off at somebody....maybe the world. There is something really odd going on here AGAIN with these pitchers. Lester had a pretty good outing I thought and Beckett had a very good outing but it is not like they have been models of consistency up till now with Beckett clearly more consistent than Lester. But neither has been so consistent that they can be in that much of a snit over poor run support.....not enough that Lester should be leaving the dugout with a huff and a snort and Beckett should be leaving the ballpark in a huff and a snort.

Maybe there is no relationship between Lester's behavior and Beckett's but there is plenty of blame to go around for where the Sox are right now and plenty of reasons to think they can all do better. I would hate to see the whole thing go spiraling out of control at this point. However I did not like what I saw from Lester last night and what I heard about Beckett tonight.

I have been as critical as anybody has been of some of the horse s*** baseball from some of the everyday players but more unprofessional behavior is not going to solve anything.

Frustrating game. Didn't like the bunt in the 7th at all, nor running for Gonzalez, which resulting in having Podsednik up with 2 out and RISP. Get em tomorrow. Season's not over, etc..

Yeah, one of the most frustrating games of the year for sure. Season is NOT over; its only June 6. Still, this team has issues.

Nava should have been up there pinch hitting for Byrd with two on and one out; not sure why he wasn't given the chance to at least tie the game with a sac fly. Lots of tactical errors.

On the plus side, Beckett pitched very well. If we are going to stay in this race, he will have to keep pitching well and Lester is going to have to find himself. Also, I really think we need one more high quality SP to really hang in there. What is keeping the FO from packaging Youkilis with others to go after Garza?
