He's given up 8 runs in his last 6 starts. Along with a shut out in TB not to mention he almost shut us out. He could help out for a low cost.

Thing is, his numbers and the fact that he is a lefty and one of the better pitchers left on the market means he wont be too low cost. And in Fenway, he'd be terrible. Think about it, he has given up the most HRs in the game (tied with Hughes actually) in the toughest park to hit a homer

Sox have shown interest in Jason Vargas from Seattle. I think he would be a nice addition.

The quote in MLB Rumors says the Red Sox have 'mild interest' in Vargas. That about sums it up doesn't it? This team has mild interest in making a deadline move. They have mild interest in this season and the whole concept of winning games.

They need to get together with their marketing and PR people and come to a decision soon. If you dont commit to this season, then the fans will start to go elsewhere. If you dont de-commit from this season, then you'll be worse off come next season. Staying pat does you no good

You should just call yourself 24/7 black cloud for Red Sox fans.

Pedey says they aren't taking enough pitches in the late innings--not playing as a team.

Hell, Pedey, you guys have been doing that for the last couple years. That was noticeable not only to fans but also to announcers covering your games. I heard Rick Sutcliffe say that during a game last year-- he said you weren't playing as a team. I felt the same way. You guys think smallball is golf.

How about contributing to the thread, maybe refuting a point or two. Might make you sound more educated and knowledgable on all topics. It's easy to make fun of someone's opinion, but it actually takes intelligence to refute their points

Clearly the Sox have to do something to satisfy the needs of their PR machine. Heck maybe doing a deal that is completely devoid of risk, devoid of potential, utterly and completely milk toast white bread blah is as hard to pull off as making one that actually means something. I mean it takes real talent to identify the totally bland and then spin it into the magnificently grandiose.

Should be fun watching them pump up this balloon, sending it aloft then watching the media goons divide down party lines of "how gullible do they think we are" vs. "genius...sheer genius".

They should have done that Hanley R. for Crawford deal when there was a window open. Maybe the Marlins turned it down. You don't know, because they don't tell the truth about trade proposals. But look at the media attention Hanley is getting playing for the Dodgers! Sure, it's big market LA Dodgers--maybe that's it--but Hanley would have attracted some attention in Boston. He could be a 30-30 guy this year--not bad even if the Dodgers had to eat his salary. And he's hitting for them. He's playing 3B, but he could play SS in Boston easily--considering what they have right now. It was probably their only chance to get rid of Carl this year. Opportunity missed. Sounds like Cherington.

So the Sox are "serious" about JJ? They aren't bold enough to win the bidding on him. Besides, I suspect they are in the same non-spending mode right now they were in pre-season.

Watch what they do, folks, not what they say.

I think the Marlins looked at Crawford and just said no. Wouldn't you have all things considered.

Not only is Crawford playing poorly but his string of injuries has now become endless. If I were a GM I would not accommodate the Sox in any way. If they made it a completely one sided deal I "might" be willing to take Crawford off their hands while he is still in this almost able to play mode.

I suspect that no matter what the Sox did, the Marlins would have found any deal that allowed them to dump salary the way they dumped it on LA more attractive than anything the Sox could come up with.

Red Sox Called Braves, Rangers About Beckett

The Red Sox have made calls to the Braves and Rangers within the past 48 hours in an attempt to dump Josh Beckett, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports. Passan adds that the Red Sox began talks with the Rangers and Braves because they believe Beckett would waive his 10-and-5 rights to play for either team. While the Dodgers have yet to receive a call on Beckett, they're one team that could potentially be interested in the right-hander, according to Passan

Sweet!

The Red Sox were in on Francisco Liriano all the way to the end before the Twins dealt him to the White Sox, tweets Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.
Really? What was our best offer -- the fat bullpen cop, because the White Sox basically gave up a bag of balls?

Pedro Hernandez was a fringe top 100 prospect before 2011, then fell off the map. He'd been good this season in the minors, so he was actually a prospect going to the Twins, but the sox could have easily beaten that deal.

I don't think they need to add anybody at this point. What they need is to get their own house in order.

They need to straighten out their starting pitching. Get Morales back as a starter--in place of Cook.

Put Ciriaco at SS instead of Aviles--who has been stuck in cement far too long there while Iglesias is rotting in Pawtucket. If Ciriaco can't hack it there defensively, bring up Iggy.

Bring up Lav and have him competing with Salty. Carry 3 catchers and one less pitcher.

Lav is a Yale grad, and should quickly pick up calling games properly.

I would deal some of their excess--Shoppach, Sweeney, Albers. They will need spots for Bard and Bailey soon.

If they dump Beckett, they have somebody for that slot--Cook, Morales or Aviles when Bard/Bailey return.

I think Crawford should get his operation now unless they can deal him. He's almost useless the way he is being used. They won't let him steal a base--which is half his game. It's pretty laughable. What a f**king horrible organization. Who knew it would come to this. But collapses don't happen without incompetence in the management.

I've been following the tweets--Olney and Heyman are NYkers--so damn negative about the Red Sox.

Nobody wants Beckett. He eats chicken and drinks beer. BS.

Passan tweets Beckett as a "dump". Hanley gets the royal treatment because he went to big market LA.

Hanley was a dump, folks.

there was a perfect chance for a double steal with Ells on 3rd and Crawford on 1st..

This is the kind of stuff the media should be zeroed in on--

Is Valentine managing with one hand tied behind his back?

seems like it. he is not a bad guy, but he has made some poor decissions that has cost us the game and some crucial games too!

the NY media is f***ing us all over.. there is never a single thing about Yankees coming out.. its very disturbing

I always keep saying its the NY media that is always behind anything negative for the Redsox.

Ciriaco @ SS till he proves he can't handle it. His defense is better than Aviles & it's exciting that he owns the Yanks (for now).

Too bad Carl Crawford is on this team.

What's behind Red Sox negativity is the Sox pathetic play this year-- nothing else. There have been almost no bright spots and almost no hot streaks where they have strung together wins.

when words get out like Redsox trying to dump Josh Beckett but find no takers. its very easy to add 2 and 2 together.. i dont care how bad they play but when negative words are taken out of context by the media.. and it never has happened to another team .. last few years its been redsox .. not blaming the media completely, but they are more part of this problem then what it really is.

I dont know how anyone could be blaming the media for the negative view on the sox. That is absolutely hilarious. Wait, so the sox are a .500 team because Buster Olney printed something negative, lol.

Beckett is a dump, take off the rosey colored glasses and see what is in front of you
