The latest word on Edes twitter is the Sox are not in on Hanley. Then who are they in on?

There is a sense on the boards that Cherington is not the guy for the Sox GM job right now. That they needed an outsider to change direction. He is basically a status quo guy, who was in on all the Epstein mistakes. He's not going to admit anything has gone wrong. If so, you can blame Lucchino/Henry.

They probably saved some money keeping the front office changes to a minimum.

It is stupid to even consider Crawford for Bell and Ramirez. Crawford has had some injuries, but if he can stay healthy, he is a big part of this team. Ramirez is only hitting .246 and Bell has a 6.05 ERA. That trade would not be worth it in my opinion.

Also in other news, Lillibridge was traded to the Guardians for Jose De La Torre. At least we dumped Lillibridge, but we got back a 26 year old minor leaguer. His career minor league ERA is a 2.86 in 6 seasons. I don't think there is much upside to him because of his age, but at least we got rid of Lillibridge.

In a word, Crawford sucks. Bad fit for the Red Sox.

Crawford may be a bad fit but that is no reason to trade him off for Bell and Ramirez. They can work out the right players with Ramirez and Crawford as part of a deal that might work out OK but I don't think Bell Ramirez for Crawford accomplishes very much.

There's definitely a reason to trade him for Bell and Ramirez. It gets them out from under a monstrous contract 3 years earlier. Another reason is that there's a good chance that Hanley, being a right-handed hitter with good power, will outproduce Crawford, a left-handed pull hitter with not nearly as much power, for this team.

Now that may not be enough of a reason (or reasons) for you to make the deal, but those are legitimate reasons.

I just think the Sox would be better off trying to expand on the deal and get more out of it that Ramirez and Bell even giving up more to do that.

We are not going to get anyone regardless of the outcome of this road trip.

If we don't see a couple big names leaving this team at the deadline, I'm done with this ownership. I will have to start being a casual fan for my sanity.

It can't be much worse than it has been.

I'm gonna end up as a DBacks fan if Sox management continues to be garbage. We've already been to Chase Field a few times and my son is asking for DBacks gear.

I liked the sound of things much better when folks were tossing about deals that included Johnson and Hanram. If Johnson and Hanram included I can tolerate Bell.

I smell an under the radar acquisition coming:

D'Backs Designate Ryan Roberts For Assignment

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 24, 2012 at 4:39pm CST]

The Diamondbacks announced that they designated Ryan Roberts for assignment. The move creates roster space for John McDonald, who's returning from the 15-day disabled list, and will spark trade talk involving Roberts.

The Tigers and Rays appear to have interest in Roberts, so Arizona GM Kevin Towers has at least two potential trade partners (the Tigers' interest was reported before they acquired Omar Infante; it may have faded since). Roberts, 31, is a utility player who has handled second and third for the Diamondbacks this year. He has posted a passable .250/.306/.357 batting line in 280 plate appearances. Roberts earns $2.01MM in 2012 and will remain under team control through 2015.

The Red Sox got De La Torre (high 90's, high K rate) for Lillibridge.

The Red Sox got Zack Stewart and Brent Lillibridge for Youkilis.

So....they got more for Lillibridge than Youkilis. Oye.

On MLB TV tonite, Rosenthal didn't include the Red Sox among those teams interested in Hanley R., but Larry Bowa and Mitch Williams both said the best team for Hanley was the Red Sox--they have veterans like Papi and Ross who can turn him around. They said the lack of those veterans in Miami to guide him has hurt Hanley's development.

Meanwhile, back at the coral, I see Crawford is batting 7th? tonite against LHP. Imagine a guy making $20million batting 7th! You'd think they'd be willing to get rid of him for a sack of potatoes. But that would make Cherington & Co, who signed the guy, look bad. There's the rub.

It's going to be really, really interesting to see if this FO just digs their heels in and really commits to this team, and goes out and forces the issue to get that bonafide ace like a Cliff Lee or a Felix Hernandez. They don't need anymore #2/#3 types, so no Garza IMO.

They need to either get Lee, Felix (even though he is "not available"), or someone of that caliber if they're really committed to this season.

I didn't see Ichiro in any trade rumors either.

That being said, hell no to Cliff Lee.

I saw quite a few that said that if the Rangers can't get Hamels, they could target Lee.

Cliff Lee was just booed off the field in Philly after giving up 6 runs and 4 homeruns thru 7 1/3 innings. Greinke on the other hand has only given up 1 run and 3 hits thru 7 innings......

Who do you think has a better shot at Lee or Hamels--Nolan Ryan or Boy Ben?

Hamels would be stupid not to re-sign in Philly. He should stay in the NL.

Lee has had a frustrating year. He loses when he pitches well, too. The killer is Halladay.

He has not been the ace they need. But they have their hitters back, and if Lee and Halladay can get rolling, they will make up ground fast.

The latest on the Phillies is they are trying to unload Pence.

Not really. De La Torre is under-sized (5'9" 175 pound) and was a minor league free agent. Zack Stewart was a third round pick by Cincinnati. Last year, he has pitched a one-hit shutout against the Twins. He has been traded for Scott Rolen, Edwin Jackson, and Kevin Youkilis in the last three years.

Imho, De La Torre is not close to Zack Stewart.

Sound logic, if a player hasn't been in rumors they won't be traded.
