Red Sox Scouting Scott Podsednik

By Mike Axisa [April 17 at 9:03pm CST]

The Red Sox are scouting Scott Podsednik, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). Boston is looking for outfield help following the injuries suffered by Carl Crawford and Jacoby Ellsbury.

Podsednik, 36, is currently hitting .158/.304/.158 in 23 plate appearances for the Phillies' Triple-A affiliate. They are willing to trade him for a fair return despite their scuffling offense. The Red Sox are actively exploring the outfield market, but earlier tonight we heard that they have not inquired about J.D. Drew's availability.

He would be an improvement over Repko.

I am interested in Marlon Byrd. The only problem with that is when Ells and CC return, we have five OF's that all will deserve playing time. I could live with that though. Maybe one could be used as trade bait for a reliever.

Has this from the Chicago Sun Times been posted? I was hoping for Marlon Byrd as part of the compensation package.

10:56 AM ET 04.15 | Keep an eye on the Boston Red Sox??? developing outfield situation. The Cubs are. Depending on how they view the prognosis of center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury???s shoulder injury, the Red Sox could turn to the Cubs, who have been willing to trade center fielder Marlon Byrd for months. That could open another avenue in the Cubs??? ongoing efforts to strengthen their bullpen. Although it might take a week or more before the Red Sox determine whether they???ll look outside for help, insiders suggest the Cubs??? front office, which maintains close ties to several Red Sox officials, is monitoring the situation.

That has not been posted. I am totally down for bringing over Byrd. He could definitely help fill the void with Ells out.

Maybe Theo would consider taking his mancrush, Salty in return for Byrd, and we could promote Lavarnway.

There is no guarantee that Ellsbury will be back this season at all. Its entirely possible that he will eventually need surgery. That hasn't been ruled out yet.

I'm willing to give Salty a longer leash. He started slow last year and eventually turned into a decent offensive catcher.

I read that already. I still have no trust in the Red Sox medical personnel after the bungling of Ellsbury's injuries two years ago and Buchholtz's injury last year. I am sure they will try rest and rehab first, as they should, but if that doesn't work surgery remains a possibility despite what they are now claiming.

I'd like to see a package that would include Saltalamacia and Youkilis for Byrd, Soto, and Ryan Dempster.

Geovany Soto certainly has fallen off offensively in the last season plus, but he might be better than Saltalamachia. I fear Salty just doesn't help the pitching staff enough with his pitch calling and developing defense.

The need for Byrd is obvious and Dempster is a battler and innings eater. April trades are rare, but I truly believe the team needs an early shake up to get things turned around quickly.

I highly doubt that Chicago would pull the trigger on a deal like that.

Note I said the Boston package would be headed by Salty and Youkilis. They would have to include minor league prospects which Epstein and Hoyer would probably love to have in a system building for the future.

Salty had 2 screaming outs against Lewis, both were little bit shy of HR balls. maybe he just needs to be trying to hit doubles and not go for the HRs.

Some good news about Ellsbury's progress:

Jacoby Ellsbury making slow, steady progress in shoulder rehab

Posted by Scott Lauber at 7:26 pm

CHICAGO — As the Red Sox wrapped a seven-game road trip here today, Jacoby Ellsbury showed up to U.S. Cellular Field with his daily query for the team’s athletic trainers.

“What do you got for me today?” he said.

Ellsbury has been posing the same question for the past two weeks, ever since he learned he wouldn’t need surgery to repair a partially dislocated right shoulder. And although the Red Sox have not yet outlined a timetable for Ellsbury’s return, there are indications he’s been making progress.

“He was carrying a banana the other day,” manager Bobby Valentine joked.

Of course, Ellsbury is doing more than that. He accompanied the team on the week-long trip to Minnesota and Chicago, and each day, he went through a set of exercises designed to help him regain normal range of motion in his shoulder. Once that occurs, he figures to progress to strengthening exercises, and eventually, to throwing and hitting.

Mostly, though, Ellsbury is trying not to get too far ahead of himself.

“I didn’t know how it was going to feel one week out or two weeks out,” Ellsbury said after today’s 4-1 loss to the White Sox. “I’m consciously trying to move it as much as I can. I’ve been just trying to show up at the field early and make improvements from the day before. They have a plan for me each and every day, and all we’re doing is just trying to execute that plan.”

Ellsbury just tweeted that his shoulder is making great progress. Good news that he's excited enough about it to let us know.

“@JacobyEllsbury: Hey guys... Wanted to give you an update. My shoulder is making great progress. Can't wait to get back out there! * #RedSoxNation #redsox”

The Ellsbury injury has really hurt.

With all the bitching and moaning going on in the media, nobody stops to consider they lost their closer and their top two outfielders before the season has hardly started. Plus Youkilis now.Sure, the front office hasn't done the best job with capable replacements, but when you pay 5 or 6 guys most of the team salary, you sacrifice depth. This isn't the Yankees. Not that NY doesn't have its own problems.

According to Valentine, Ellsbury has started to do agility drills, which is apparently the next step in the program.

Jackso - Do you know what kind of a rehab program one would go through with a subluxed shoulder? Agility training is obviously going to be an early stage step, but what kind of a timetable would we be looking at here?

Originally, I remember a 6-8 week timetable was discussed. This Saturday will be 4 weeks from the date of the injury. So are we looking at a late May, early June return to baseball activities?

June 2nd would be 7 weeks from injury. Add a week of rehab games, and he could be back by June 9th. That'd be a big boost.

3 or 4 games for Yaz.

True story: Yaz once cramped in his left hamstring. He didn't think twice about it.
He played every day and could be trusted to drink beer and smoke in the clubhouse. Sometimes he broke league rules and smoked in the dugout during BP.

True story, in 1973 his wrist was so badly sprained that he had to tape his hand to the bat. After he hit the ball, he had to disentangle to run to first. He didn't miss any time. Today's players are overpaid princesses- all of them.

Yaz played at a time when players made no money and owners didnt seem to care about their "investments". Now, these players are humongous investments and lingering injuries will make big financial losses possible, so they "play it safe".

Hard to say without seeing what the MRI showed. Agility drills are big, but it depends on what kind of agility drills they are doing. I think the biggest test is going to come when he swings a bat. We should see that in a couple weeks. If he can swing without pain, then he will be back quickly.

...and yet he played for 23 years with one stint on the DL.

The problem with this opinion, and it's really frustrating, is that people who buy into this old school, play injured style of baseball is that if you want a guy to play with a subluxed shoulder, he goes out there and he struggles and he sucks and he hits .160 and can't play defense, and then the same guys who bark about how Yaz never hit the DL are the same ones screaming about how he sucks. PA and what is he doing out there.

The game is a lot faster now and the talent level is significantly better than it was 40-50 years ago. You can't compare the players today with the old players. I read the other day that if the 2012 Astros would absolutely crush the 27 Yankees because those days there was no such thing as a curveball and the pitching is lights out better. You just can't compare innings when people were throwing 360 innings a season, or what people were able to play through in the old school baseball days.

Oil can Boyd abused drugs before, during and after every gm.... He even dropped his stash , crack-that he kept in the bill of his hat, onto the field while he was pitching...

Not really sure if that has anything to do with anything, just watched the e-60 report on him and found it interesting

Josh Hamilton couldn't even play AA ball on crack, what an underachiever.
