The list is beginning to grow of the folks gcalling for Bard to bew the closer. I think it is going to be painfully obvious that they need Bard in the pen. It is inevitable.

Who are you, Darth Vader?

I think its inevitable too. You just have to wonder how many games our bullpen has to blow before it comes to pass.

The front office needs to face reality. They wanted Bard to start. But now the closer is gone for half a year, and they have to change their plans. Bard has to close. It's really that simple. That's the priority.

Unless, of course they are waiting for Bobby to use Melancon as closer.

You set up the closer as being important--you better have a good one to fill the role.

This makes absolutely no sense. The point is seeing whether he can be a starter. Neither of us knows if he can or can't be' date=' so stop pretending like you do.[/quote']

If he can start then great. But it doesn't make sense to have two guys pitching in a role that isn't best for there skills. Makes more sense to me to switch them.

The FARCE is with our pen....:harhar:

This may be true.

Once Cook gets injured again will people be calling for Bard in the rotation again? Will Aceves getting clocked every 5th day in the rotation be acceptable?

We did and he got hurt. s*** happens. We have to adapt without blowing the whole f***ing thing up.

This likely loss on Valentine. He should've kept PAdilla in there. Instead of going for the W, he tried to coddle Aceves which is a total Tito move.

I think the theory is that it is never worth it to overpay for a closer. At the same time, I imagine the sabermetric analysis assumes that there is SOMEONE in your pen who is better than an average schlub in high leverage situations.

If the Sox had a Bard-esque reliever who was just pitching in the 7th instead of the 9th, perhaps a closer by committee would work. However, they don't have a good setup man or closer and they don't have anyone who is a beast in high leverege situations. I think Morales is the closest they have.

I think your line of reasoning only works if you are looking at this as a lost year and planning only for the future. There are lots of other options for our #5 SP. We don't have any options right now for closer other than Bard. Who else is there, really?

There is no easy solution. We simply don't have enough quality pitching. You pick your poison here.

So you give up on trying to see if they actually have a SP in Bard without a single start. and you are what..... absolutely dead nuts sure Bard can close....really.....based on what?

Aceves certainly has the pitches to pitch better in these 9th inning stints than he has shown...if anything he just does not have the head for it.

Bard has a different set of pitches but may be just as disinclined to having a head for closing as Aceves appears to be.

This is 20/20 at its best. I mean, your potentially new closer got beat two days ago, you have a 3 run lead. You put in your 'closer' and assume he can get 3 outs before three runners score. I bet any manager in baseball does the same thing.

If the reasoning is that the best move today would have been to keep PADILLA (of all people) in the game, that tells me that they probably don't need a closer, they just need to make smarter decisions.

If they get away from the idea of a 'closer' perhaps they just keep the hot hand in there.
