Breaking news: Andy Pettitte returns to Yankees

Globe Staff March 16, 2012 12:32 PM

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Huge news from Tampa. The Yankees have signed Andy Pettitte to a 1-year minor league deal worth $2.5 million according to Jack Curry of YES.

Now the Yankees have CC Sabathia, Hiroki Kuroda, Michael Pineda, Ivan Nova, Freddy Garcia, Phil Hughes and eventually Pettitte as potential starters. That's seven.

The Red Sox have three starters, maybe Daniel Bard and a bunch of questions. Ben Cherington has said the team is scouting other camps for starters but this salvo from New York again raises the question of whether the Red Sox are deep enough to contend with the Yankees and Rays.

Add more quality depth to the team. For a team that needed duct tape and glue to hold together it's rotation last yr, we've suddenly amassed significant depth. I have a feeling this move cements Pineda to the minors to start the yr. Garcia and Hughes get the final two spots out of the gate, Pettitte comes up in the setting of injury early on and Pineda returns in June. It's a great problem to have

His family must be driving him nuts.
I've been saying that about Oswalt. He'll be signing with someone sooner than later, IMO. The family life can't compare to the Major League life, and they can have the best of all worlds.

I think Pettitte didnt want to be playing while preparing for Clemens' trial. Now that the DA f***ed up Clemens' case and jeopardy was attached' date=' he doesnt have to worry about it[/quote']

So he won't have to sit out 50 games like Manny for being a steroid abuser?

One yr off for a guy who keeps himself in shape isn't a huge issue

Except that he cheated and he cant cheat anymore and nobody knows how long he was cheating. Its clear now the "whole year off" was because he was either embarrassed and knew he was caught/was going to get caught and couldn't pass a drug test.

Besides the whole cheating thing, hes good to go.

That's a farse and you know it. If he was caught, it would have been announced like Manny's was. And you think he couldnt pass a drug test after 2010 although he passed all of them prior to retiring? That's just a bitter sox fan there, nothing more, nothing less.

It was announced. He apologized for using them. He was in the Mitchell report. Thats just a homer Yankees fan there, nothing more, nothing less.

The Mitchell report was made public well before he retired. It has no relevance here. He did not fail a drug test that would lead to suspension, so your idea that he was avoiding a suspension is petty and misinformed

Ill give you that. The whole cheating part remains true though.

There is a clear difference between steroids which gets you stronger and human growth hormone HGH which heals you. Pettitte used it to treat an injury 3 years prior before MLB even decided to ban it. He even had his best seasons well before and after he had used HGH.

This is exactly why people do not classify Pettitte as a juicer like they do Clemens or Bonds.

Steroids are steroids. They provide an unfair advantage and they also increase athletic performance. Don't try to defend the undefendable.

Exactly, he cheated.

He didnt use a steroid. HGH is a hormone. Regardless' date=' he was never in violation of the MLB code as HGH was banned after his use.[/quote']

So because cheating evolved and it went unnoticed........cheating is ok?

Manny cheated and was caught. Ortiz has been accused of cheating yet continues to claim innocence. Pettitte cheated and admitted he cheated.

Its easier if you just accept it.

And if he wouldn't be a homer.

Which gives you an unfair advantage over the non- "hormone" using competition, which constitutes cheating.

If they ban chew from the game cause they found out it heeightened your senses, should everyone who chewed it be labeled a cheater? Pettitte took it to heal faster, not to pitch better and it wasn't illegal at the time.

HGH is an anabolic agent that increases muscle mass and protein synthesis in the body. You couldn't be more wrong with this statement.

The amount of moral relativism on display here is hilarious.

Do all of you that absolve Pettitte of his guilt due to when substances were banned also absolve Bonds of his guilt since he did everyting prior to ban and testing too? And, does the naive acceptance of statements from the athletes about why and when they used extend to all the others too? I'd guess not.
