While reading the Boston.com website, i noticed they were touching on this subject. Given the leadership crisis on the Sox last year and Varitek not coming back as a player for 2012, should the Red Sox name a new captain? And who should it be?

It may seem like a meaningless title, but they certainly need an identifiable face who can step up and be accountable (to an extent) for the team's actions. God knows they need it this year.

Pedroia is our Jeter basically. Face of the franchise, heart of the team as far as I can see. We'll see, but Pedroia should get all the votes.

No captain at all is such a better idea that I can't bring myself to name one of them as better than another.

Don't really like the idea but Pedroia is the natural choice.

Lester had the whole beer/chicken involvement, Youkillis realistically doesn't have a long-term place on the team, and Gonzales is too new/soft-spoken

Ortiz seems to be stepping forward. If a captain is named' date=' it should be him[/quote']

So what did he do last year to show leadership.?Aparently JV did nothing or was powerless with his decline in numbers , but NOBODY showed they had any influence over the team. We are hearing way too much from Ortiz this year but I see that as a grand stand play to open his big money year and maybe try for another contract next year. But influence ....no. Pedroia did nothing last year leadership wise. He was seen as TF's boy and that would not allow his team members to look up to him then or now.

Somebody above used the words..."face of the RS and heart of the team" to describe JP. Those same words have been used to describe DO......but I see it more for Dustin.

I would vote No captain....because none of those listed would be any good, nor would DO

True, but he's old. I'm impressed with how he's handling everything. A big difference from the crappy "big diva" nickname he was given.

I prefer "Big Crappy"

At least its almost kinda rhyming. Nickname parodies that are not even close to rhyming are awful. Only 50 year olds and Dane Cook fans could find amusement in that.

The poll question is actually "if they did".

And if the topic question was the same thing I wouldn't be complaining. A large number of people are coming in here wanting to vote "none" and having no place to put it.

I voted for Dustin because there was a ballot and I cast a vote, but frankly I do not think we should have a captain, nor do I think we need one. We had one last season and he couldn't much about the collapse and disintigration in the clubhouse, nor could some of the other veterans on the team. Let Bobby and his coaches take the lead; that's what they were hired for.

Well said. My thoughts exactly.

Absolutely NO CAPTAIN.....and especially no stupid ass "C" on the jersey....what a joke that was.

I talked about that for years.....why did he wear that "C"?---Jeter and the other captain never did. Fianlly I just joked that it reminded him that he was a CATCHER......but a moleclue of respect for JV died whenever I saw that letter.

Whether a team has a captain is a function of the manager's personality and needs. If he needs a guy to keep order in the clubhouse and he has a guy like that on the roster, I am sure he will name someone. I don't think Bobby V wants any other "chiefs" as Dick Williams said in 1967. Sometimes a captain is purely ceremonial, like Jeter or Yaz, based on their accomplishments and tenure. The ceremonial type captain is not a need.

The captain should be whoever steps it up in the clubhouse, not someone arbitrarily named and given a "C" to wear. Just because Varitek had that on his uniform, doesn't mean anyone listened to him. The vacuum of a leader last year proves that.

Didn't you guys hear? Varitek received a minor league invite, so he'll still be the captain this year.

Oh God please lets not go down this road tonight.
