Agreed. Very low expectations for this year. I just wish the FO had stayed UNDER THE CAP because there is little chance of really making a good run at it this year. Guess its just time to sit back and watch it all unfold. Whatever else it is, it will be interesting and probably not work out the way its been described in ANY of the scenarios here or on any other board.

Let the games begin............

Like you and I have been saying from the beginning, Pumpsie---keep your expectations low, and you'll enjoy the season just fine.

Well I guess I must be a "glass is half full" type of person. I remain optimistic about this team.
Spud, your glass is always full of vodka. What's this half-full stuff?

Since you appear to equate less than giddy optimism as a view that we should just pack the season in I am going to assume that your position is that they are a shoe in for the WS since that is the other end of the "world is black or white" argument

HAHAHAHA

Exactly right. Who is this guy who cannot distinguish the middle ground between winning the World Series and forfeiting the season? As long as you enter this season with a healthy dose of skepticism you won't be disappointed. Everyone knows what the problems are, and they are significant. Since its been announced that we won't be adding any players of quality, I think that its time to make a prediction: we will win around 90 games, give or take a game or two. If that gets us into the playoffs, then we make the playoffs. If not, we watch the Yankees and Rays in October-again.

You know' date=' it's too bad they couldn't get Oswalt to go along with Ohlendorf. Then they could have signed Darren Oliver and finally the crowd response to Sweet Caroline would have some meaning.[/quote']You reached on this one.

Holy crap, I have to agree with you 100% again. :o

Fred, if 2 key starters went down on any team it would be trouble.

The problem isn't bringing in depth SP. The problem is that they don't have young arms in AA or AAA that are ready to contribute. If the farm system was better, these signings would mean nothing. If they can get 1 adequate SP out of the bunch, it's a win.

Who'se disagreeing MVP?? You are spot-on right with that. No team could afford to see two key starters go down, but I do think right now the Yankees and Rays are equipped to handle it better than we are because they have deeper rotations, and, though this sounds like crying, they seem to get more breaks with the injury bug than we do.

That is why with all the pitchers we signed this winter it would be important for two of them to be able to make a solid contribution to the team, whether that be one starter and one reliever or two starters. I hear Renaudo and is it Barnes (?) are supposed to be two can't miss prospects if they stay healthy and we sure can use a couple of good young pitchers ready to help us in a couple of years. From where I sit, if we can keep our "Big Three" healthy and effective this year we could make this worth well for us, but we need some luck in that health department for a change.

It was a (likely) futile attempt at lightening things up to get you people to stop turning everything into a "I disagree with you which automatically means you're stupid" argument.
You are usually so much better than this. My expections for you are very high. I don't see most of the "you are stupid" argguments, because I use the ignore feature.

Well with all due respect Spud, that tells us nothing. How about telling all of us why you remain optimistic about the season. Really, I for one would like to know. What is about the 2012 Red Sox that makes you feel this could be our year?

You take all those retreads the Sox signed, you put 'em all in a blender, blend 'em up for one minute at the high setting, and out comes one Roy Oswalt. Presto. :)
