pffff... well, As I said, I'm not surprised that a small market team like the Nats sign Jackson. I want to see the terms. Nats are building an interesting rotation.

They really do have an interesting rotation.

The team announced the one-year deal this afternoon, and Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, who first reported the news (Twitter links), says the agreement is believed to be in the $8-12MM range. The Scott Boras client has to pass his physical for the deal to become official.

there's Ortiz money in play. Wow Ben.

The majority of us were not fond of him to begin with. a 1.50 whip is not going to get you far in the East. But... he's still better than Cook. If Ben doesn't go all-out for Floyd/Oswalt, it may be time to put 2-3 million out there for Duke/Harden to increase the odds of getting it lucky with their current group.

It is just ridiculous, that Cherry Pie is going around making $5 million dollars offers for 1 season. Is that the standard stipend to be paid by the Sox going forward?

Word is, the Nationals are trying to get rid of John Lannan. At 5 million, the Red Sox may actually be able to afford him. He's not great... but neither are the Red Sox's other options. Give them Doubront, Lars Anderson, and a bag of rocks and call it a day.

I have no clue what is going on in that FO... Making a retrospective on trades/arbitrations/money/needs/Theo's comp/cap concerns, thus far...all these don't make sense to me at all.

Edwin Jackson career ERA+ - 97

John Lannan career ERA+ - 103

I like this idea. Lannan is a slightly above average pitcher who isn't going to make much.

Jackson been better by a margin the last 4 year. He average around 105 during that time. Also has better peripherals.

Lannan is cost controlled till 2014, isn't he? I really doubt that Nats trade him for bulks like Lars Anderson. If they trade him, they will ask top prospects. He has not even reached his prime, has he?

He isn't very good.

Well, he is 26, isn't he? and he is a 4.0 ERA pitcher...he probably could improve, who knows?...

DC is not a small market.

DC has the 7th largest metropolitan area in the U.S.

Boston is 10th.

Are you suggesting that the Nats is a big market team?

He's lackey esque (the one we got right now).

career

103ERA+

WHIP: 1.42

9.4/H9

0.9/HR9

3.4BB/9

4.7K/9

No thanks.

Who gives a s*** about globally. In the US' date=' Boston is 7th largest tv market, DC is 8th.[/quote']

Do you realize that this is a globalized league? Tv broadcasts, merchandise, foreign players, etc. play an interesting sportive/business roll outside the US... Owners and the entire baseball environment do care, trust me. Market share must be rated globally. Ask big market teams like Boston and NY.

You're confusing market size with popularity.

I think it is wrong to equate "market" with "ability to spend". The Nationals have been aggressive on numerous significant FAs the past few years and have not landed a number of them. They signed Werth to a big contract. Them being able to spend this money on Jackson is no where close to a shock. They aren't the Pirates.

Add to that the fact that they have arguibly two of the best young players in baseball (Strasburg and Harper) and it is even less shocking.

Go get Lannan if he's being dangled. He would be a decent #5.

Nobody is disputing the ability to spend. Marlins have spent tons of money this year and I bet that they do not receive the same compensation/revenue/gross margin/exposure/popularity than big market teams receive like Boston/NY via Broadcast/merchandise/tickets/advertising, etc. in both domestic and foreign.

This isn't even a response to what I said. Maybe just stick with saying "I totally agree" to A700 posts, unless you can explain how DC is small market without inferring global popularity of the brand.
