I think lackey should be part of the deal

Who cares about getting someone in return when one of Theo's best ever pieces of business is left here to eat KFC

Now that Epstein and Cherington are dealing for Epstein's compensation, the chances of Lackey being involved are increased. Maybe a 3-way with San Diego. Looks like a good fit.

Everybody has a chance to come away smiling here.

But wouldnt Epstein and Cherington dealing with compensation be a conflict of interest because of the issue of Epstein in general?

It's happened before --when Beane was signed by Boston and negotiated his own departure with DePodesta. Maybe Epstein will change his mind, too.

Nothing surprises me in MLB--they can do anything and get away with it--with their anti-trust exemption. It's a country club.

Now that Epstein has been introduced officially as Chicago's Chief of Baseball Operartions, that part is a done deal and he is finally one (thank God). The bummer is that our leverage with the Cubs is done as well and I'm hearing that Selig might have to step in and settle the hash. I lean to getting Matt Garza or Brett Jackson, but frankly I think that is a reach right now. Good, though, if it could happen.

The antitrust exception has made for strange bedfellows between the government and MLB for a long time now. I would love to have been a fly on the wall when that sham of a Clemens trial was worked out.

The longer this has gone and the more it becomes an issue for the Commis the more likely it does end up cash or prospects so meaningless that the cash actually becomes preferred. I guess you can't fault the Sox for trying.

when the commish gets involved, it will only be cash. He really cannot go in there and say, well, it looks like Brett Jackson is the right move here. No, he'll assign a cash value and they'll move on. The conflicting issue here is that Selig would be dealing with one of his rivals, as he is intertwined with the Brewers, so he will be extra careful not to piss the Cubbies off.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Epstein's gone. I think his last few years with the Red Sox were too miserable to contemplate anymore. However, allowing him to go to ChiTown without getting the needed compensation in return has pretty much allowed us to give away the game without even getting our last at-bats. To have to depend on Selig to settle the hash is like trying to eat soup with a fork. The guy has as much backbone as a chocolate eclair and will try to soft-peddle the whole process with some kind soothing words that John Henry will just lap up like a dog. Here is where Lucchino should finally show the balls I once knew he had and demand proper compensation for a man he allowed to leave and become the chief of baseball operations for another club. Of course, five will get you ten that we are all whistling past the graveyard on this. We most likely will wind up with a golf bag and some used balls.

How is demanding anything going to help the situation. Cubs have Theo already. Loud noises aren't going to scare them into giving up prospects.

Selig will step in if the two sides don't agree. If they had a verbal agreement of a certain quality of prospect to be traded, and Philly doesn't give up that quality of prospect, Selig could get it to them.

If Selig steps in. I don't think we'll get what we should.

They'll be hell to pay if they don't get something for Epstein, who walked away from his contract. And after what the White Sox got for their manager from the Marlins. I don't think Selig will want to piss off LL.

I would hope there is something more than just cash as the compensation. The Cubs obviously think that he will make them winners, so they should have to give up something of value to get him a year early on his contract.

There is no difference in the value there' date=' other than that we would benefit from losing Lackey.[/quote']
