First and foremost, what is CC Sabathia going to charge us to retain his services for the foreseeable future?

Nick Swisher. Exercise the option? Offer extension? Let him walk?

Russell Martin. No doubt in my mind we keep him on next year with the fantastic job he did behind the plate in 2011.

Jorge Posada. Solid as he was as a LHB against RHP, I think Posada's time in pinstripes is finished. Best of luck if he wants to give up the honor of playing for one team his whole life to play as a bench guy on an also-ran team for peanuts.

I don't see the Dodgers able to extend Matt Kemp and Andre Either. I could see Matt Kemp wanting to test the waters of free agency. Does this make him a trade & extend target if we can get a window?

Yu Darvish. Now theres a tempting guy to go after. Our biggest rivals couldn't possibly post a ridiculous bid, considering it blew up in their face when they 'won' the last one, but they will be reeling from The Collapse and likely in need of a starter. They'll have some money to spend with guys coming off the books, the question is how much?

CJ Wilson. They say he's the best available guy if CC doesn't opt out. I prefer to stay away given his age, but he could be worth a look.

Prince Fielder. This man could break Bonds's single season record in Yankee Stadium. But would he come to NY to be an expensive DH? Would we even want him? Money better spent elsewhere if you ask me.

Albert Pujols. No chance here, but imagine.

Aroldis Chapman. Rumor has it the Reds want to clean house. Cashman passed on Chapman the first time around. 3 years and 15 million left on his contract. Curious what he would cost. I imagine a deal for him would be more than a salary dump, but less than a prospect bidding war between contenders.

We must improve our offense. The numbers point against it, but our team sucks at driving in runners. And having a bunch of all of nothing guys doesn't help. I'm still at work, but will post my ideas later today. Beyond frustrated

We need an offensive splash, but the high price tags of Pujols and Fielder mixed with their position requirements make them poor choices.

I think the first thing we need to start with on offense is a 4th OFer who can be used like a starter. A guy like Sizemore would be great for that, assuming he gets let go by Cleveland. What better place to revamp his worth than in Yankee stadium with that short porch. I'd offer him something like a $5 mil contract for 2012 with a $12 mil team option for 2013. Bill him as the starting LFer, have Gardner be the roving 4th OFer who can still get 120 starts. By the end of the yr, Granderson, Gardner and Swisher looked dead. Gardy turned it on again in the ALDS, but the other two couldnt.

More to come, I am just trying to recover from my hellish night in the pit.

Posted

Here goes....

1. Sign Grady Sizemore to a 1 yr deal with a big team option for 2013. Give him a chance to recoup his value and make more money in 2013. He'll be able to start but also get some rest with the Yankees having 4 viable starting OFers

2. Pick up Swisher's option. He's relatively cheap and seems to always put up an .800+OPS for the season.

3. Re-sign CC. We all know he's opting out.

4. Trade Burnett. I think the guy showed enough life late in the season to have an NL team want him for a discount. Eat as little as you can, but try to move that contract. This might be the only chance you have.

5. Must add a 1b to CC's 1a. CC is an undisputed ace. Hughes and Nova seem like a very nice complement as long as Hughes can stretch out in the offseason and come in with the velo he showed at years end. But we need a guy who can take the ball after CC and be lights out. That might be CJ Wilson. That might be a guy like Matt Cain or even the fairy tale known as King Felix. One thing is for sure, we need another effective innings eater. AJ in the 2 hole failed miserably after year 1. Nova looked nice there this yr, but he's a rookie coming off his most arduous season and left his final game with an arm injury. And after that, we're talking about kids. We need another top flight pitcher. I'd kick the tires on Matt Garza, John Danks, Gavin Floyd, etc.

6. I know I might get s*** for this, but resign Bartolo Colon. His conditioning leaves a lot to be desired, but he was money this yr, won't cost a lot and could either be our #5 starter or swing man depending on if one of the kids takes the #5 slot. After seeing the debachle of Fenway, having a viable big league contingency is necessary.

7. Let Freddy Garcia walk. He really cannot dominate with his stuff the way it is and gets hit around by patient teams, which just so happens to be all playoff bound teams sans the Rays. He's also a Type B and will probably reject arbitration. If he accepts arb, then great, but he's gonna get a 3 yr deal on the open market.

8. Offer arbitration to Cory Wade. This is a no-brainer

9. Offer arbitration to Russell Martin. Also a no-brainer

10. Pencil in Montero at the DH and backup catcher spots. The kid is fearless and has a $100 million bat. Do not trade him, he's got the chance to be one of our best offensive players next yr and a definite shot at ROY

11. Avoid dealing Nunez. He'll be a wanted man since he can play SS adequately and has a nice ceiling in terms of his offensive potential. But with ARod and Jeter being over the hill, having the young kid mature under their tutelage will be priceless.

12. Dump Chavez. Aside from a hot April, he was useless.

13. Give the kids a shot. This yr we proved that the kids can make a splash. From Nunez being a solid backup to Montero being hot as balls in September to Nova being our second best pitcher on the year. Our system is loaded and we have a lot of high end talent at the upper levels, especially on the pitching end. Don't lock yourselves into all 5 pitching spots with immovable players. This is why I want Colon. He handles himself if he needs to start, but if a rook beats him out, nobody will be calling for Cashman's head for a hideous contract.

Overall, I dont see a humongous turnover, and getting Joba back could theoretically shorten the game to 5 innings on the starters end in must win games. That's huge. Here's a proposed roster, obviously preliminary...

C- Martin

C- Montero

C- Cervelli/Romine

1B- Teixeira

2B- Cano

3B- Rodriguez

SS- Jeter

SS- Nunez

LF- Sizemore

OF- Gardner

CF- Granderson

RF- Swisher

OF- Dickerson

SP- Sabathia

SP- Wilson (or mystery SP X)

SP- Nova

SP- Hughes

SP- Colon

RP- Robertson

RP- Rivera

RP- Soriano

RP- Chamberlain

RP- Wade

RP- Logan

SP/RP- Noesi/Warren/Phelps/Mitchell/Banuelos/Betances/Kontos/etc

how long should I keep the sig for. Maybe another few days? I need to take it down and post something about Joe Girardi
You've had it up for more than 2 months. Would it kill you to leave it up until the end of the ALCS?:D

I'm glad you guys are keeping this within realistic goals, unlike the Sox off season thread where just about everyone has an idea on how to get Felix. Since JJ and Felix won't be going, I'd turn to John Danks. I just read on rotoworld that 2012 might be sort of a rebuilding year for them. Danks is entering his last year of his deal as well. White Sox need a catcher, we have Romine. Every team always needs pitching, so David Phelps and DJ Mitchell could be nice additions to the deal. This would also help us with a 40 man crunch. DJ kind of got lost in the arms we have and wouldn't be starting in Triple-A. Phelps and Mitchell are both guys who could break camp with the White Sox. Then add a lower level guy with potional, Jose Rosario? Romine, Phelps, Mitchell and Rosario for Danks. White Sox get two guys who can break camp, one guy they can call up mid season and a guy they can dream about.

I pick up Nick Swisher's option and shop him to the Braves. Pick up one of their good starting pitching prospects, I wouldn't even mind getting Vizcaino back.

I go hard for Jon Broxton(who will without a doubt will be nontendered by the Dodgers), with the success of Wade and Martin here, I'd inlist both of them to do some campaigning for us in the off season to get him here. A one year $3 million contract with incentives to get that to $5 and a team option for $6 million next year.

I agree with Jacko, got to go hard for Sizemore. Guy has worn out his welcome in Cleveland, a lot of their fans actually can't stand him or they think they traded him already haha. Something similar to what Martin got himself $5 million, but with more incentives.

Do not resign Mitre, tell Girardi to go f--k himself.

Let Garcia walk and collect the pick. I actually see him signing with the Red Sox for on a two eyar $10 million deal. Would help with their backend of the rotation needs.

Dump AJ somewhere, even if you got to pay 75% of that deal.

C: Martin

1b: Tex

2B: Cano

3B: ARod

SS: Jeter

LF: Gardy

CF: Grandy

RF: Grady

DH: Montero

Lineup

Gardner

Jeter

Grandy

Cano

ARod

Tex

Montero(Moves up as determined by his stats throughout the season)

Martin

Sizemore

Pressure is taken off Sizemore hitting 9th.

Bench

Cervelli

Maxwell(I like him more than Golson and Dickerson)

Nunez

Laird

CC

Nova

Danks

Hughes

And then like Jacko I'd resign Colon, but only for a similar deal to what he got this year, maybe add on 500K to a million. I believe he got 1.2 million in all this year. I wouldn't him back for $2 million. If he goes Diva on us, look at some minor league vet signings and then Noesi and Warren here.

Mo

K-Rob

Soriano

Broxton

Logan

Wade

Kontos

*Joba on the DL until about July/August.

Payroll would be $195 on this team. Not too bad. Warren and Noesi are the first calls to the rotation if Colon or anyone else faulters. Also with a lower payroll, you can see whats out there in terms of better options for the bench with a vet. Like last year with Jones and Chavez.

Meh, a couple things...

I love the idea of Sizemore, but if we get him, we cannot deal away Swisher. Sizemore has been so fragile of late that getting rid of our contingency plan would be poor planning. I think you break camp with 4 OFers, with Sizemore, Granderson and Swisher starting. Bur Gardner gets his 120 or so starts in by resting Grady and Swisher in the DH role or out of the lineup altogether. That keeps us fresh. Our OF was dead come playoff time, and that was mostly because our backups were Greg Golson and Chris Dickerson. We are deep in OF depth in the lower minors, but the closest real potential contributors will be starting 2012 in Trenton (the Almonte's). So we have to have contingencies for next yr. Imagine doing what you say and then Grady is out for 2 months for knee surgery again. Can you stomach 8 weeks of Chris Dickerson in RF? I know I couldnt.

I also dont think we need Broxton. Soriano is coming back, nobody will pay him what he's gonna make and he still has an outside chance of being Mo's successor in 2013. So he's gonna stay on. Robertson is back. Wade will be back. Logan will be back. Also, Joba will be ready by May or June as well. And we have a TON of kids in the high minors waiting to contribute. Our pen doesnt need to be touched.

I like the idea of Danks, but I think Chicago will want an ace's ransom for a guy who pitched to a #3 or 4 last yr. But, he did have a high BABIP and we'd be buying low, so it might not be a bad idea. I'd be ok with that kind of move so long as Montero, Betances, or Banuelos dont move in the deal.

Posted

I don't think we NEED Broxton either, but he's a good guy to take a chance on with spare money. If he's good he get a great 7th/8th inning guy and type B compensation or we could pick up an option. If he's bad it's just a few million. Plus that could take away an option for the Red Sox or Tampa.

As for Sizemore, what about getting Dejesus? Guy rakes in Yankee Stadium plug him into the 4th OF spot. He's on a down year, could be a nice buy low plus he's a hometown guy. I'm not going to s*** myself if we get sizemore and keep Swisher tho.

Thinking ahead as well, I doubt Dodgers will be able to lock up Kemp. Would you sign him to a big deal? Assuming he has another good year.

I just saw J.R. Towles will be a free agent. I would love to add him to the system. I know we have a ton of catchers but Cervelli's head kind of scares me. As well as Romine not being ready and well he might be trade bait.

Posted

Broxton is all about power and even his agent says that his velo has been affected by his injuries. I dont want him, and we dont need him.

I am getting the increasingly nervous feeling that we're about to make a humongous move. I don't like the idea of gutting our farm or moving Montero or Banuelos. But I have a feeling a certain King out west will be made available and we are likely to be in on the bidding

The more I think about it, the more I see us doing something big. Unsure what that is, but I initially thought this team only needed some tweaking, but I have a feeling that some superstar will be walking through the door. Watch us get Pujols to play in LF, lol

Not out of the question.

I just have a feeling. This season was fun to watch, but I think most Yankee fans were aware that this wasnt their best foot forward. We had a lot go right and we still only lasted 5 games in the postseason. Our offense remained pretty close to the same with Martin being the only big addition. Well, we have the potential to change it up a bunch. Posada is gone and Swisher has an option yr to choose. We could pick up Swisher's option and trade him. We could decline his option, offer him arb and get 2 picks for him. We also could pick it up and keep him. If we move him, we could get a fair amount for him. He's signed for one yr at $10.5 million. He's clubbed 81HR over the last 3 seasons and has an OPS in the .850 range in that time. Plus, he turns 31 in Novermber. He's a middle of the order bat on most teams, yet he's our #6 or 7 hitter. But he's also AWFUL in the playoffs and isnt a big time clutch guy.

One of the things that is circulating the news in NY is the Yanks letting Swish go and signing Beltran to a 2-3 yr deal. I think that is a pretty big leap for an unsure gain. Beltran is 3 and a half yrs older and played 140+ games this yr for the first time since 08. And he finished the yr injured anyway. When healthy, he is a better player. His defense is better, his patience is on par, and his bat is better. But if you get rid of a healthy guy like Swish on a 1 yr deal and get an injury prone 34 yr old to replace him, you better have contingencies. It also doesnt fix the problem of this team, which is the age. Our team belongs in a nursing home.

To be honest with you, Pujols may not be too far fetched. He has played LF in the past, and in Yankee stadium, playing RF isnt that difficult. You can make up the salary somewhat with the loss of Posada and if you move Swisher (that's $24.5 mil off the books). Alright, drool-fest over. It most likely isnt happening.

But, we have a minor league system that is absolutely loaded with pitching at the upper levels and we have a top player that could headline any deal for anyone in Montero. If we wanted to make a splash on the pitching end, we could make any trade. But, I dont know. I just have a feeling that this offseason wont be as quiet. We are going to make some humongous move, book it

SO it sounds like the Yankees are closing in on a deal with Cashman. That's the formality. Other big news is that Damon Oppenheimer is no longer a candidate for the Angels GM job. He's done a stellar job in the draft and INTL forum over the last few years, he would have been a big loss.

Onto the player movement front. The Yankees and Sox are said to be very interested in Carlos Beltran. The Yankees still are mulling over whether to pick up Swisher's option, but right now it looks like it will be picked up, and if they get Beltran, he'll be dangled.

Also, the Yankees are preparing an offer to CC to prevent him from option out. It is said to be a 6 yr offer for around $23-$24 million per year, totalling around $140 million. The consensus is that he is still expected to opt out.

And Scott Boras is asking the Yankees to renegotiate Robinson Cano's deal. He has 2 options left on his deal worth $14 million and $15 million through 2013. The Yankees have already turned down his request. At that rate, he is a steal.

I've been following the Yankees stories this offseason on ESPN NY, and there are some fans with unbelievable pipe dreams!

One guy: "Resign CC for whatever he wants. Go after CJ Wilson and Buehrle to get 2 lefties in the rotation. Then see if you can get King Felix for Montero, one of the kller B's and a lower tier player."
