Just heard an interview on XM with Rangers Mike Maddux. I think the Rangers may jump in at that price for Oswalt. I know he isn't the decisionmaker but he does give an insight into their thinking.

Regardless of how Jose Iglesias plays in spring training, he is a long shot to be the Opening Day shortstop, according to a major league source. Although Iglesias is a major league-caliber defensive player, he has struggled offensively, batting .235 with a .285 on-base percentage and only 10 extra-base hits in 387 at-bats last year at Triple-A Pawtucket.

$5 million will not get it done for the Red Sox.

No, 5m probably won't be sufficient to land Roy Oswalt. Of course, the Sox might not want to pay much more than that. I think injury concerns loom here and the Sox just don't want to dish out money for someone who could be on the DL for half the season (they are already doing that with Jenks, Dice-K, Lackey).

Offers that become publically known are often only half-truths, so I'm not putting too much weight in the Sox reported $5m offer. It could be $5m with significant incentives above 120, 140, 160 IP for all we know. I just wouldn't assume that they are completely lowballing him. That would be stupid and I have no reason to think they are stupid.

It would be nice if our medical staff was competent and could pick up on these problems before we sign a player.

Guardians Sign Dan Wheeler

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [January 26 at 3:58pm CST]

The Guardians announced that they signed reliever Dan Wheeler to a minor league contract. Diamond Sports Management represents the right-hander.

What a bunch of cheap bastards the Red Sox have become. We trade Scutaro's six million dollar contract to create some payroll dough for a pitcher and we offer Oswalt only five mil? That's one million less than we're paying fatso Jenks. Incredible!!!! We're not only not getting Oswalt; we probably aren't getting Jackson or Floyd either.

Now pitching for the Red Sox, number 52 Brian short order Cook. In the bullpen we have Deutschland Justin Germano and Carlos Hi Ho Silva.. I'm really getting good and pissed off.:thumbdown:thumbdown:thumbdown:thumbdown:thumbdown

Because it is not a major league contract, we get no compensation pick. The compensation pick thing has not really worked out to well for Benny Boy this off season.

A $5 million offer to Oswalt is absurd. Of course, what do I know. I don't run a baseball club. We did pay a combined $10 million to Smoltz and Penny one year. Neither pitched a full season for the Sox. The only reason that he hasn't signed with the Rangers already is probably because after hearing our ridiculous low-ball offer they are re-doing their proposal to shave off a couple of million before they make their offer.

I am looking forward to the movie about the Red Sox 2011 -12 off-season entitled No Money Ball.

We learned three or four days ago that STL already offered Oswalt 5 M. He refused that offer (I have understood). I can"t remember the day but I'm pretty sure that STL already offered that amount of money to Oswalt. If Ben just offered that amount of money (5 M) to him too, what did Ben make wonder that Oswalt is going to accept that offer? It doesn't make sense to me, unless this 5M thing is more false than a 3 Mexican pesos coin.

Unless it's a base salary of 5 million and a bunch of incentives which Oswalt doesn't want to deal with.

But as a700 said, what do we know, because we do not run the ballclub and do not know the specifications of the offer.

i hate all this ******** offseason. just want the games to begin. enough speculation.

 it's funny man, this is all about... speculations, conjectures, opinions, forecasts, etc. But I got you. Hell, I'm very excited about next season. AL games will be very interesting to watch, can't wait.

We are pretty close, pretty close in order to close our gap (SP). Fingers crossed.

I would bet the farm that the Sox "plan" was some number like $5-$6M plus incentives to get to a higher income. As I suspected though. once an expectation is set, then a bunch of other teams can jump in at those kinds of numbers.

Sox will be extremely fortunate to end up with Oswalt or Jackson in my view. I would not bet on either at this point. Maybe Floyd if anybody.

Jung I said this earlier, hopefully we both are wrong, and this 5M-thing is just a smoke bomb or something :)

I actually think the $5M number has been associated with so many teams that I am inclined to think it is valid. I still think there is something about Oawalt (maybe some combination of injury potential and age) that has got the major leagues spooked on this guy.

The problem for the Sox is that all these offers are looking like they are going to be pretty low. If I were Oswalt and I were going to pitch somewhere for short money it sure and hell would not be anywhere in the AL East.

Floyd's salary of $7mm is much higher than his AAV of 3.875mm. This is probably why he's very appealing to the Sox. Very small hit on LT calc.

All ways take you to Rome...8M :D

Guardians sign Dan Wheeler

This is a f***ing shame. Seriously, to let Wheeler go on a friggen minor league contract? They get no picks, and they lose a guy who would have been a bargain. I think this is the worst move of the offseason by the Red Sox front office so far.

Off seasons are very long when your team stops winning games when August ends.
