I honestly believe the Red Sox when fully healthy and everyone playing fully capable have just as much talent as any team in the AL.

This. We haven't had a team like this recently. Hopefully this year we avoid this regard.

 You don't want a starting pitcher?

Considering what is out their, not really. Ejax is as inconsistent as they come. And Oswalt is intriguing but his injury history throws up red flags. I'm not against them going into the season with what they have and looking for better options later. pretty much how I felt about them getting crawford. I thought it was too much money and they be better off finding a stopgap instead of throwing that stupid contract out there and waisting a ton of money and ending any chance we had at keeping the better player in Ellsbury(Although I admit Ellsbury was an unknown at that point even though I stated numerous times the type of player I thought he could be).

There is nothing wrong with holding your chips and wait for a better move to push them all in :)

To me if they can pick up someone like Oswalt or Jackson for a one year deal for less than 8 million they should do it. I understand your point, but I'm not comfortable with our pitching depth going into the season. There might be a great move available at the trade deadline but that's 2/3 into the season.

I'm sure they are trying to pick someone up now, chances are Oswalt is trying to see if he can get any better offers with another team, probably something NL so he doesn't have to try real hard to have a contract year. Jackson is probably still asking for more than one year. Either way we'll just have to wait and see.

Texas shopping Uehara. We could use a guy with high Ks and little BBs.

Saw that earlier. I think he would be a great fit for Boston, you know he wants to play for a contender too, he just declined a trade to the Jays.

So you are okay with Aceves and Bard as the 4th and 5th starters? Also, who will be the swingman/long reliever in the Pen?

The choice is obvious: Miller

Sarcasm.

Miller might be able to perform in a mop up role, but not as a long arm or a starter.

Thank goodness you were being sarcastic. The thought of him in an important role gave me the dry heaves.

I think he could be an effective middle reliever. He does show signs of having some decent stuff occasionally. He's just too inconsistent to be a starter or a long reliever.

And to answer this' date=' the new CBA's rules regarding luxury tax are much more astringent than the current ones, but if the Red Sox manage to stay under the LT in 2012 and 2013 then they get their LT slate "wiped clean" meaning they can save a ton of money which then can be reallocated to other things.[/quote']

We only have to stay under the LT threshold for this year to "Wipe the slate."

You only need 1 full year under the LT threshold to reset the 4 year time clock I believe. Like I have said we are staying under this year in order to go hog wild next year for Cain/Hamilton.

This is incorrect. You need to stay under the LT threshold two consecutive years.

Maybe if we ask him nicely, he'll even sign for less than 8m he was asking for.

I agree, it looks like Miller is better suited for 1-2 innings. I don't see why Doubront, Pimentel, Tazawa all couldn't have a shot at providing league average production in the long man/ swing role. Silva could earn his way onto the roster and take that position.

I'm not advocating they add no one to the staff. Just I'm not going to be upset if they don't do it right now. It's the same thing as usual between us. You want to win now, so everything needs to be on the team now. I also would like to see them win now, just not at the expense of the future. I'm willing to gamble a better player will become available later in the season. A player the Sox might not be able to fit if they sign one of those guys because there is no more room under the LT.

Too bad they didn't have an extra 20M laying around. They could have both ;)

Damn really? I skimmed through the thread at work. I must have missed that.

In fact even the two consecutive years to get back to 0% Lux Tax Rate is a break by way of the new CBA. Under the old one if you were over for three years it would take three years under to get back to a 0% rate. Although being able to get back to 0% in two years is a break it is sort of the carrot in this case. The stick is that if you don't get back to 0% you are clipped for the tax AND clipped for the rebate teams would expect to get back from their revenue sharing contributions.

Red Sox Have Made Offer To Edwin Jackson

By Mike Axisa [January 25 at 2:13pm CST]

The Red Sox have made an offer to free agent right-hander Edwin Jackson reports ESPN's Jim Bowden (on Twitter), and the two sides are currently in talks. A source told Bowden that they prefer Jackson to Roy Oswalt, to whom they also made an offer.

Jackson, 28, might be willing to accept a one-year contract according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The Scott Boras client has thrown at least 199 innings in each of the last three years, with a 3.96 ERA with 7.1 K/9 and 3.00 BB/9 with a 44.0% ground ball rate during that time. With Josh Beckett and Clay Buchholz carrying injury concerns, Jackson would add a much needed innings eater to Boston's staff.
