These last few runs have been big. Bard and Papelbon needed a little rest. They've thrown 50-60 innings each this season. Francona needs to get Wheeler some freaking work, especially in tight situations. He's been throwing really well lately.

That's 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief against really a pretty good lineup.

This is why I call him the Pocket Ace.

How bad are the Yankees kicking themselves for letting this guy get away?? He can come in and be a great set up guy in the 8th, or he can come in after our SP is getting shelled and give us 3 innings of elite bullpen innings and give us a chance to come back. His value in the bullpen, due to versatility and talent, is almost as high as Bard's IMHO.

Agreed. He's what we were trying to get out of Masterson when he was still here, only really doing it.

And the fact that one, we stole him from NYY, and two, we control him for multiple seasons going orward, is just a delicious combination.

Salty is going to turn out to be the headline acquisition of the 2010-2011 offseason. Nothing against Adgon but we were already pretty good at first base. We DESPERATELY needed someone who could do what Salty's doing.

We were good at first base with Youk but when you have a chance to go A-God/Youk over Youk/Beltre you take it.

Noting as I do the difference between Youk last year, and Youk this year, I'm not so sure. The extra demands on him defensively are hurting him at the plate.
Posted
Youk is struggling pretty bad this season. We may be seeing the end of the Youkilis era, defensively speaking, and may start to see the transition to Middlebrooks fairly soon, i.e. late 2012, early 2013.
Posted
That's a little quick for Middlebrooks as a starting player. If Youk's done now, we're probably looking at a brief Lowrie interregnum until WMB is properly ready.

You think so? I don't know, he'll get a full seasons worth of AB in AAA before getting called up. I could easily see him in early 2013, and probably even late 2012 to get some playing time under his belt.

If the Sox sign Ortiz to a 1 year deal, would it really be that surprising to see Youk take over DH in 2013, and Middlebrooks as 3B?

Umm... Much as I love that Aceves was able to pitch 3.2 innings of brilliant relief, it was a blowout, why aren't we getting some of our depth guys work?

Sounds about right to me if Middlebrooks continues to progress.

Once he went 2 inning it wasn't worth pulling him.

And how many DH can mash 30-40 HR a year aside from Ortiz ?

Not many. Adam Dunn was a 30+ HR guy and he suddenly forgot how to hit.

Lavarnway might be our DH. He's got 30HR potential.

Why do you say that? I don't watch or read much at all about the farm leagues. What about him makes you think he can hit 30HR?

Will Wakefield get his 200th win? I hope so. And Gonzo will get back into first place for RBIs, too! Go Sox

Finally a nice offensive showing, been about a week. The Sox are playing like it's 2010. Could be a good thing, could be a bad thing.

He has done, albeit between AA and AAA. This kid has legit power.

Well, they lucked out with a quality start from Miller--and a quality relief job from Aceves--the only reliable reliever they have outside of Pap and Bard. They sign all these new bullpen guys in the off-season, and none of them are any good except Aceves. Sooner or later, they'll blow him out if they overpitch him.

Look at those whips on guys like Miller, Wake and Lackey--north of 1.5. That tells you they get hit

and/or they can't throw strikes. Pitching is going to be the undoing of this club in the playoffs.

mystery about Dunn.

then you have Ells with more HRs than AdGon. And Granderson hitting like Babe Ruth.

keep in mind HGH is not tested for in MLB. So you don't know what the effect is when you go off it after getting your big contract, or go on it.

personally, I think it should be legal. why ban something if you don't test for it? that's catch-22.

I believe this is a little premature.

Yay, scoring more runs than the other team for a second game in a row.

I only watched the first two innings, but Miller's line looks like he was pretty good. Nice to see Lavarnway got his first hit. And finally a big offensive day.

Yeah, I'll jump on that bandwagon. Anybody know how Lavarnaway looks behind the dish? Maybe Salty/Lavarnaway could be our catchers next year. Move one onto DH to give Ortiz an occasional blow. Could work.
