Great game! I listened to it from the beach. Very thrilling in the beginning. Poor Weiland got smacked.

Weiland gets a ticket back to R.I. The kid has a lot to learn. He's not close to ready. If Lackey can't return to a reliable pitcher, they'll have to make a move to get a ML pitcher.

Didnt get to see the game today, just glad we got the win even if it wasnt pretty. Man am I glad we swept Baltimore..... Taking on the Rays next is going to be a challenge.

Not really. You saw what happened last time at the Trop. We'll send out Wake, Miller, and Beckett in the three games. David Price won't pitch in the series for the Rays.

Well, that still means the Sox will probably see Shields/Hellickson, who are just as tough, if not worse.

That's true.

Agreed that Weiland isn't quite ready, but if Scutaro makes any one of 3 plays he could have made if he had even an average shortstop arm, that second isn't nearly as murderous and his line isn't nearly this bad. In a word the kid was let down to a certain degree by his defense.

Kid didn't help himself, but we should recognize that he did run into a lot of bad luck.

Personally I think the kid should get some credit for putting the lid back on in the third and fourth. Big innings of that sort can happen to any pitcher, when you combine the defensive miscues, the bloops and the line drives that no one was going to catch. If the kid was that green he wouldn't have been able to buckle down and hold them scoreless for the next 2. That takes a certain mindset that all prospects do not possess, that a starter needs to have to succeed.

I think there's plenty of good signs from Weiland. He's not ready yet, but he's a guy we could see pitching regularly for Boston in a couple years with his stuff if he gets it down a bit more consistently.

He's just a kid that is far from ML ready. His debut was at best forgettable even if the defense had been better. He's not worth any discussion except maybe as an indicator of how deep the Sox are having to go into their organization to find guys to fill out the rotation right now. To me it indicates a significant need to make a move.

One thing that has gone completely under the radar this season is that the Red Sox have one of the best defenses in the game. The Red Sox won, and they went deep into the bullpen on a day that they could afford going into the bullpen. But Weiland let this team down, it is as simple as that.

You have it backwards, Palodios. Weiland made a couple bad pitches in that second inning -- the one to Lee wasn't great -- but Scutaro allowed 3 of those 6 runs with various plays and decisions he made at least partly because of the weakness of his arm at short and his inability to execute three different throws.

The defense as a whole is good, don't get me wrong, but you're wrong or lying if you want to claim that our shortstops are up to snuff in the arm department, especially Scutaro, who never had a great arm to begin with and is fighting through an injury that reduces his arm strength further. And for no good reason it came to a head in the second and Scutaro really got exposed. Not really anyone's fault, just a weakness that you have to recognize while analyzing that inning.

3 different grounders to short in that inning that could have been outs for a guy like Iglesias or Navarro who had a proper arm at short. We get those outs, Weiland gets through 5 allowing at most 4 runs.

I didn't mention the shortstop situation. My point is, for every mistake Scutaro makes, the other five gold glovers will make up for it. Not every player is like Iggy, and Iggy would not have hit a home run to bail out Weiland in the second inning. All six of those runs were earned, and so was his 2.50 WHIP.
