His options are to play through it or have surgery and be back in 4-6 weeks. If I were him, I'd do the surgery. We need him with pop. If he is a glorified singles hitter, he isnt helpful to the team. Nunez can fill in in the meantime. And this also means that he'll have less wear and tear by October

Also, this brings up an interesting predicament for 2012. Do we go out and sign a guy who can play 3B and platoon them between the field and DH so ARod can extend his life? Because when he's healthy, he's still great. His problem has been staying on the field of late. I'd seriously look at signing Aramis Ramirez at the end of the yr and see how he'd take to a 2-3 yr deal between 3B and DH

I have a hard time seeing Aramis opting out of a 16 million dollar 2012 in order to sign a two year deal in New York.

Why not Albert Pujols? He is perfectly capable of playing 3B, imagine all the HR's he would hit at Yankees stadium.

You really think that's a realistic option?

I wouldn't consider it unrealistic, Yankees certainly have the money to afford him, and as A Rod continues to age it would be smart to move him over to DH.

I can picture it now... ;)

You know what I can picture now? Aging A-Rod, Pujols and Teixeira struggling with injuries for the next 10 years. Sweet.

This is what I want ... doubt it happens though, for a variety of reasons.

Except none of the players you mentioned will be on the Yankees roster in 10 years.

If A-Rod plays through it, chances are he'll hurt it even worse miss the rest of the season. Either way, his knee will never be the same.

2012 is a team option

5 years/$75M (2007-11), plus 2012 club option

re-signed by Cubs as a free agent 11/06

$5M signing bonus

07:$8M, 08:$14M, 09:$15.65M, 10:$15.75M, 11:$14.6M player option, 12:$16M club option ($2M buyout)

full no-trade clause 2007-10, $1M assignment bonus if traded

Ramirez has right to void contract after 2010 & become a free agent

award bonuses: $75,000 each for Gold Glove or All Star selection, $0.25M for LCS MVP, $0.3M for MVP,$0.35M for WS MVP

Ramirez may void 2012 option, but doing so forfeits $2M buyout

2012 option becomes guaranteed if Ramirez:

I am just assuming the Cubs would use the options, because quite frankly, he's worth it.

This is the right move, surgery for ARod. It's routine, went as planned, no surprises. He probably walked out of the surgicenter today. He'll be running in 2 weeks and should be on a rehab assignment by early to mid August. He had no lift and couldnt run. He went from being an above average speed hitter with light tower power to a statuesque singles hitter. He needed this to be done. Nunez will hold down the fort until he's back.

Also, I highly, highly doubt the Cubs exercise a $16 million option on a player who has been a walking DL stint up until this yr. If Aramis were a FA after this yr, he'd see offers likely maxing in the $12 mil range, so the Cubs could try to resign him and forego the option or just cut him loose, offer arb and take the picks

We knew the back end of the contract was gonna be s***. These kinds of injuries happen. He's been on the DL each of the last 4 yrs, but this and the hip are the ones that are gonna be the longest. Prior to his injury, he was a .900OPS 3b who was playing okay defense. These things happen, this shouldnt lead to any major long term consequences, and if it allows him to go back to the .900+OPS hitter he was prior to the injury, then it's worth it
Posted

Arod hasent been at 900 OPS since 2009 witch make his contract even worse than it is .

and even IF he does ever get back to 900 OPS his contract is still s***

Posted

This was his line prior to July 1...

.299/.373/.507. That's an OPS of .880, for a 3b, and he was rebounding from a miserable May when he was dealing with a quad issue. The fact is, he was in elite company for his position and his OPS. The guy turns 36 yrs old at the end of the month. Girardi needs to use him less like a 26 yr old and more like a 36 yr old. I think that with a 2/3-1/3 split of 3B and DH, he could still be a .900ish OPS player.

And the contract never looked good. Giving a 32 yr old a 10 yr deal was assinine.

This should allow us to put a few more games between us and the Yankees by September. A-Rod's been the Yankees second most valuable player this year and I can't believe I'm going to say this but Nunez is as big a downgrade defensively than he is offensively.

Arod's contract is looking better and better by the year :D
Personally, I hope he has to have his leg ampuitated, because he is a great player on the Yankees. I could care less whether his contract is a good deal or a bad deal. For all we know, it is insured against injury.

It will weaken their line up considerably. Tex and/or Cano will see fewer good pitches to hit.

Well, ARod has a UZR of 10.3 and a UZR/150 of 23.1. The highest he has had since the stat has been gathered. His defense this yr has been highly underrated

The lineup definitely weakens without a healthy ARod, but we should see Swisher and Posada pick it up a little with more fastballs coming their way. The good thing is, we have a 6 game lead in the L column for the wild card and the sox are the streakiest team in the bigs, and we are effectively tied with them (in the L column).
