On another note-- why hasn't Doubront's name been coming up much? In 13 starts at Pawtucket' date=' he has a 3.20 ERA this year with a 1.22 WHIP, and nearly 8 K/9. I bet he's a much better option than most of the guys in this rotation right now.[/quote']

Is he back from injury yet?

Dubront is the pitching version of Lowrie. Always hurt.

I agree...elbow, groin, and now a hamstring (I believe). Besides the injuries, he has shown an inconsistent change up. He isn't really ready yet.

Theo should have gotten Furcal. He has talent.

I think Furcal was a good pickup by the Cardinals--he should be good the rest of the season after injuries. But he is a 1-2 hitter, and a basestealer. The Red Sox have the 1-2 part of the lineup sewn up with Ells and Pedey. Even Crawford will probably stay in the 6-hole the rest of the season. Crawford has had a few walkoffs, but he looks like he wasn't worth the climb on this team--especially with Ellsbury breaking out.

Once again Theo Epstein has made me happy at a trade deadline. I really like the move for Erik Bedard. I think he is a good pitcher and will really help us through our injury crisis. Hopefully this won't just be a deal for this season and Bedard will do well enough to cement a place in next year's starting rotation as well.

Buchholz progressing well. On the 3rd step for most of his exercise program. Can start throwing at 4th step. Project early Sept.

Happy, yeah, but what's Tito doing playing an infielder, Aviles, in the OF?

The kind of stuff that makes you cringe in a pennant race.

Here they are paying people $20million and then pinching pennies...

A player in the Show should never be played out of position.

It's downright mismanagement.

Could that mean possibly that he's projected to return early sept.? 5th step may be rehab assignment. Otherwise I'd be fairly concerned. If that means he could begin throwing by early sept, we've probably seen the last of clay this season.

I believe it means that he's going to start throwing in September. I think at some point in the playoffs Buchholz will be healthy and will have built his arm strength back up by pitching bullpens or simulated games. It will be up to the Red Sox whether or not they want to risk having him jump to simulated games to the playoffs though. That decision will likely have a lot to do with how Bedard does.

But against what competition would he be able to prepare? That's my concern mostly. As much as it hurts me to say this' date=' at that point, Lackey might be a better bet than Clay.[/quote']

That's the big question. The closest he could get would be simulated games.

Unless Bedard continues looking as good as he has.

Bedard is their only hope. And Theo knows it, too.

If they were smart, they would pitch Wake only at home, where they can score 6-7 runs needed to win with him pitching. I doubt they're willing to do that.

If Buchholz can start throwing on 9/7 and have 5 weeks to get ready, I'd say he will probably start game 3 in the ALDS. If you think about it, that's 2 weeks to build arm strength, and then 3 weeks where he'll be throwing against MiLB players to get ready. Given, it's not perfect, but would you rather see Buchholz with a fresh arm, but not a lot of competition on his rehab starts, or Bedard/Lackey?

Bedard. Hands down. Not trying to pick on you in particular so don't take this wrong, but I do not understand why Boston fans keep talking about Bedard as a 4/5 starter or lumping him in with Lackey as if they're similar pitchers. I've heard this a bunch of places, and like I said, not trying to single you out, dude, loll.

I would way rather a healthy Bedard over Buchholz considering Buchholz hasn't thrown to major league hitters since June. Bedard hasn't posted an ERA above 3.76 in the majors since 2005. He's an AL East proven pitcher who has the potential to pitch like an ace. As far as the Bedard/Lackey conversation is concerned, to me it couldn't be more clear cut. Bedard has got a 3.55 ERA this season and Lackey is sporting a 6+. They're not even close. For his career Bedard is ~20% above average in terms of ERA. Lackey? ~10% above average. And his performance has gone way downhill since he's been in Boston ( like i needed to tell any of you :D ). Bedard is a very good option, the only thing with him is he needs to be healthy. If he's healthy and the toss up is between him, a potentially rusty Buchholz or John Lackey it will be Bedard going in game 3 and it shouldn't be a particularly tough call for Tito.

It is a lose-lose situation. You either rush Buchholz into pitching more innings than he probably should be and risk his 2012 season and career... or you pitch Bedard/Lackey against Colon/Hamels/Ogando.

I definitely do not view pitching Bedard as a lose lose situation. He's better than 2/3 of the names you mentioned. I don't care how hot Ogando has been this season, he isn't the kind of pitcher Bedard is.

Right, health is obviously the only thing with Bedard, but assuming he's on the mound for a game 3 is assuming he's healthy. In that hypothetical situation, I love our chances with Bedard on the mound.
