Yep' date=' the Yankees had two guys that missed the list by a spot or two in Santana and Bichette. Overall, our farm is strong[/quote']

Ours?

Top 5 farm system.

•@Jaypers413 (IL): Why do you think the Yanks have been so conservative in the past couple of years when spending on the draft? Do you think the size of the Brackman contract had anything at all to do with it?

John Manuel: I've said for several years that I believe not just the Brackman contract but the entire 2007 draft has caused the Yankees to reassess their spending in the draft. They had a terrific '06 draft — Joba, Ian Kennedy, Betances, I think they've had 10 big leaguers out of that draft so far of all kinds of careers. They didn't go crazy over-slot in that draft other than Betances (Joba and Kennedy were over-slot but not outrageous whereas Betances was a record bonus for an 8th round pick). The next year they went over-slot basically for five picks in the first 10 rounds and none has worked out; Weems, Suttle, Grote and Angelini were busts in addition to Brackman. Since then I think the Yankees have decided to set a budget, to put an evaluation on players that includes an evaluation of how much they're going to pay a player, and they stick to it. They've drafted fairly conservatively since then but they still have a top 5 farm system for me. I just was going back over farm system rankings again this a.m. and I have them stuffed up in the top 5.

Talent evaluator on Jorge Vazquez, NYY DH candidate: "He doesn't have a position, but he can flat-out rake. He just mashes."

Posted

I don't like him. He's a K machine, doesnt gets on base and zero defensive value. But over a full season he could just give us Carlos Pena production and hit .200 with 30 bombs. I wouldn't be surprised.

I'd rather have him than Matsui and Damon of course.

I'd like to see them giving Brandon Laird regular at bats at 3rd with A-Rod as the DH to keep him healthy, but that won't happen.

KLong basically called him a 200 hitter at the major league level, but I think Vazquez would hit 400 with 8 homeruns in the month of April then hit 240 with 5 homeruns in May then become a 200 hitter from there on out. It might be worth it for that April tho.

K Law you mean? Cause if you are quoting Keith Law' date=' then you can write this guy's ticket to Cooperstown[/quote']

Yup. The Keith Law reverse lock is a near-certainty.

I am not sure how he can make that inference. The guy has mashed at every level. He hit 32 homers and OPS'd over .800 again even though his OBP isnt good. This winter, he's dominated and started showing a little more patience. The guy has been nothing but a masher. He can also play the corners adequately. He isnt going to be a .300AVG, .400OBP guy. He is likely more a .250AVG 25+HR guy, which would be great at DH compared to the s*** we had last yr from Posada

75 to 80 is arod, pujols, jeter type player.

65 to 70 is cain, utley type

goes down from there.

Yeah I guess kind of risk, extreme is for ifa and guys with major injury risk. High is for new draftees types and safe would be its a lock they'll be that. Like harper would be a 50safe. Cause he's basically gaurenteed to be a solid bench guy at least

Their grades are strange. They arent ceiling or else a ton of players would have a 70+ ceiling. They arent likelihoods because they give a risk level. It's weird. Regardless, I am very happy with the state of the system, especially the fact that we deal away our biggest prospect and returned to us a phenomenal prospect in Campos as well as getting Pineda. I also think that we are going to see us pop into the top 3 after this season. We had a massive amount of talent in the short season leagues and should see some of it produce in Charleston and Tampa this yr. It was surprising how much talent they kept back last yr in Staten Island but now they're all ready. Should be interesting

Well they are basically risk factors but risks that gauge if they will reach what they think they will be. take banuelos for instance he's a 65, so the comp grade they give him is a Matt Cain type. He's a medium 'risk' so medium means still some work to do to turn tools into major league caliber skills.
Posted
It's a weird grade, which is why you should rank them or grade them based on ceiling and likelihood. If Bryan Mitchell goes out there in Charleston and shows he can locate all three of his pitches, immediately, he'd be a 65 and a medium instead of a 55 and extreme. I'd rather see two numbers then a risk level than one arbitrary number that moves arbitrarily and a risk level

BTW, I was looking at the Yankee top 15 prospects and the only guys over 22 are Betances, Adams, and Warren. And they're all slated to be in AAA or even the bigs this yr. As good as the prospects are that people know about, there are a bevvy of prospects under the radar that these so called "experts" don't know s*** about

Also, the sox numbers are baffling. Jacobs and Barnes are 55 mediums? They are more like 60-65 highs. 5 tool player with power at 20 and a tall framed pitcher with an advanced repertoire who throws smoke only profile as average players if they are lucky? I don't get it

BA rips on Jacobs. They say his speed is fringy and his SB will decrease at every new level. They say he Ks at a very high level and his arm is average at best, that hell likely be relegated to LF and he needs to improve his jumps, even for LF.

Looks like Bradley Suttle is done. Drafted in the 3rd round in 2007, Gammons called him the best pure hitter in the draft. The problem wasnt his ability, it was his body. He's a type I diabetic and needed labrum surgery cutting short his first professional season. The wound got infected and they needed to operate a second time, costing him his second season. He rebounded in 2010 and won the FSL MVP, but the shoulder started barking again last yr. Sounds like he needs surgery again, but he won't go through with it. Looks like his career is over. Great talent, but no health equals big time bust....
