Yankees win. Nice. We gave yesterday away' date=' but smacked our way to victory today. Now, we just need to win tomorrow and a good 6-3 start to the yr. Yes![/quote']

Congratulations. Now eat s*** and die. :D

no team in MLB history has ever started 1-7 and made the playoffs .... time to change that !

And I bet there's been plenty of teams that have gone on 1-7 stretches or lost 6 in a row, the only difference was they did it in the middle of the season. Stats like that tell nothing

The thing about those stats is that almost every team that starts that way has little to no talent on the field to work with, making it damn near impossible for them to make a playoff run. Think Pittsburgh or Kansas City of years past.

This team is different. As long as we can figure out how to f***ing pitch and hit with RISP we'll be fine.

And few teams (or maybe no teams) as talented as the 2011 Red Sox have started 1-7, so there's no sample size to go on.

EDIT: Beat me to it lol.

Can we start temp-banning "certain people" after Red Sox losses? Especially to the Yankees?

This. Especially people who are trying to be subtle and trolling.

Other than the fact that some people are foolish enough to waste time researching that statistic and that others are even more foolish to act like it means something and expound upon it.

Right now before looking at anything else just have to get back to 500. Once your 500 the skys the limit.

Buch was horrible today. His pace was slow. Didn't he turn himself around in 2009 when he started working a little more quickly. He got very few swings and misses. The Salty/Martin thing continues to look like a very bad decision. We spent $300 million on 2 guys and we could have kept Russell Martin away from the Yanks for about $3 million. In his off years, Martin will do what Salty does in his best years. Theo's mancrush will haunt us all year long.

I don't know about all year long. But this guy isn't the answer at the catcher position. He kind of sucks.

On Paper...

This team still has a ton of question marks, especially for the pitching:

Lackey - he wasn't very good last year, especially against the Yankees.

Becket - his 2007 season is in the very distant past. Since then he's been a completely different pitcher. Who's to say he'll become dominant again. Anyways, he's never been dominant against the yankees sans a few outliers.

Dice-K : Do I even need to say anything?

Buchholz: While I think he will have a bright future, he's still has a lot to prove. A regression to an average pitcher wouldn't shock me (not saying I'm expecting that).

Pappelbon: The closer who has gotten progressively worse year after year.

Bard: Still has a lot to prove and needs improvement with location.

Everybody else is a collection of has beens, hopefullys, or never was. I hope they can get solid work from Jenks, Wheeler, and one other, but who knows.

As for the lineup, Pedroia and Youk are both coming off injuries. JD Drew is getting older and can't hit lefties. Cameron is old and coming off injuries. Ellsbury is coming off an injury and is still relatively unproven. The catcher position is a disaster and I highly doubt Scutaro can put up another career year. And Ortiz isn't getting any younger. Now, that being said, I do think this offense has amazing potential. I do think Pedroia and Youk will be fine. I do think Ortiz will still get 25+ bombs. But the rest are question marks (of course not Gonzo...)

Our starting rotation is incredibly over-rated.

I agree, I did feel that at times leading up to the season people acted as if the Red Sox's starting rotation was a given, when in fact (as you pointed out) it's definitely up in the air. But everyone has question marks, and the Red Sox still have one of the best, if not the best, roster in the American League.

You're never as bad as you look look when you're playing poorly, and you're never as good as you look when you're playing well. It's easily to focus on the flaws when things aren't going well, but it's just eight games and I think this will all be forgotten when the Sox inevitably turn it around.

I just wanna know why these guys are not ready to play the season.

I see the Globe is starting to point fingers at Francona.

Tito will never be confused with Knute Rockne.

At some time in the near future, this team will catch fire. Tito needs to keep Ellsbury out of the top of the lineup. Youk will get on track and be Youk and Ortiz will hit more and more as the weather warms. While Ellsbury is sucking, I'd like to see Cameron playing CF against lefties like CC.

The problem with Ellsbury leading off is the kid refuses to take a walk.

You have a lineup with some chemistry problems about where to bat Ellsbury and Crawford.

Then you have Youkilis batting cleanup or 5th and not hitting a lick so far.

They can't wait for warm weather. Not in this division.

This club is looking to me like it is not well-coached. Lax mentally. Weak in fundamentals.

I'll exclude Salty, who looks like he's really making an effort. He has been well-coached off-season.

April can be a strange month when bad teams win and good teams lose. But if those good teams lose too much in April, they will have a tough time making it up in September.

You and me both agreed in the offseason that they should not have settled on Salty.

The Crawford signing made zero sense. The money should have been spent on Vmart where he would catch for 2 years then transition to a DH to replace Ortiz.
