How on earth is it that Nishioka and Scutaro are on the All-star ballot and Lowrie is not? Nishioka has played 6 games in the major leagues for f***'s sake.

Only person on the Yankees that belongs there is Cano. That's just the infield though. If I had to pick from the whole team Granderson would definetely get my vote for OF.

I disagree. I don't think Cano deserves it, but I think Russell Martin does.

Detroit and TB into extras in DET. Here's to a nice 18 inning, bullpen draining game, after which Tampa has to travel home prior to facing the Sox tomorrow.

Just wanted to say my favorite non-Sox player Paul Maholm is having an awesome season for Pittsburgh. He threw 7 innings of 3 hit baseball tonight against the Mets. The Pirates are actually surprisingly respectable this season (32-33), and I think a lot of that should go to Clint Hurdle who I think does a really good job as manager. I always root for the Pirates except when the Sox face them occasionally in interleague, like this year.

The year he is having is the reason why W-L is useless for a pitcher (though I think we all know that anyway). He's 3-7 with a 3.12 ERA and 1.14 WHIP.

I wouldn't call myself an expert, but I don't think there is one specific best stat. I think a mix of the basics (ERA, WHIP, K/9, BB/9, etc) and the advanced (ERA+, FIP, BABIP, WAR, etc) is best. But no one measure tells the whole story.

For the record, I think that ESPN showed a graphic that Maholm had one of the lowest BABIPs and that if his peripherals didn't get better, that Maholm was in for a big regression for the remainder of the season. I like Maholm too, not for the same reasons that MSU does obviously, but he seems like a class act, and I like lefty's, and I also feel bad that he's spent his entire career with the Pirates thus far. I was a bigger fan of Tom Gorzelanny though.

My friend from Pittsburgh tells me that the Pirates are always a middle of the pack team.... until the trading deadline. Considering some of the players they've given up over the last several years, it makes me wonder what they could do if they actually were willing to pay more than 20 million a year on their roster.

I liked Zach Duke, too.

Livan Hernandez tossed a complete game shutout against STL. I'm surprised we're not hearing any trade rumors about him. Guy's reliable and he's a horse.
